Although I loved her dancing with Bill Robinson in her other films, "At The Codfish Ball" with Buddy Ebson was my very favorite...I think because the dancing was a little more "involved". She was, indeed, so adorable & talented. Best of all, there was never any dirt or scandals in Shirley's life (unlike so many other actors and actresses over the years).
i remember taking tap and jazz lessons when i was younger and feeling so accomplished being able to shuffle off to buffalo and doing the move that she does with bill bojangles robison up the stairs..i was her age too but it seems so much more natural and well better with her than mine
Two of the greatest dancers, the Great Shirley Temple, and the Amazing Buddy Ebsen! Wonderful you just don't find talent like this anymore and if you do its rare!
Shirley Temple were you real then?Gosh it is so hard to believe that there was such a child with such multi talents. No one since came near to your standard. You are one of God's greatest creations and you will continue to enthrall generations to come. You will never be out of date ...
@sharrelgoh Well, a lot of people at the time claimed that she must be an adult midget posing as a child. (Which, if they were right, would make her around 110 now.)
@LiamSwan100 Actually, there are some color movies dating back to the 1920's. But they used a different color process, which didn't look nearly as good as when color made its serious debut in films like Gone with the Wind and Wizard of Oz, both from 1939.
That said, this Shirley Temple movie, Captain January, was filmed in black & white. The video you see was colorized in more recent years.
A lot of people dislike colorization, but I think in films like this, it's a real enhancement.
Shirley Temple later said that this was the most difficult dance number that she ever did... it was done all in one take and she was only 9 years old. Amazing!
@SabrinaFairForever Actually, she was seven. According the Rita Dubas book, this was filmed in late 1935. Apparently, it took only a month to film. Amazing!
An incredibly talented child star who became an accomplished, intelligent and decent human being. There has never been any child actor since that could come close to her ability to croone a tune, act and hoof it with the best dancers of her time. Despite the depression, what a wonderful time for movie go-ers- where a quarter could buy you escape from your troubles watching this remarkable little girl. What a trouper she was, always.
What a joy to find this video..and your whole collection this night! I was raised singing and dancing to her as was my granddaughter thru me..Thanks for posting this and such a great quality! I'll enoy many hours watching them one and all. Always did love ole Buddy and his soft shoe too! Bless your heart girl.
This is the best quality I ever seen, :) ha just look at Miss Shirley go and that guy though I don't know his name. Thanks so much for posting, <3 this song
The talent of Shirley and Buddy Ebsen was showcased beautifully in this clip. What an involved dance routine! Especially for a little girl to remember what to do. Shirley really was one of a kind.
I have the singalong tape to this song so I used to sing and dance with it while I watched it. It was actually my grandmas tape then she gave it to me because we are both fans of Shirley Temple. I also have some of her movies as well
How wonderful is Youtube??! Just struck me when I saw this -a whole new generation can see this great stuff -all this wonderful classic entertainment right at our fingertips. Just simply.....marvelous.
Buddy Ebsen tells in his autobio the funniest story about how mature Shirley was. It was up to him to choreograph this number, but he couldn't get any reherasal time with Shirley; she was too busy. Finally he was able to show it to her at the Fox dance studio, and she liked it. "Come on, I'll teach it to you," he said. Eight-year-old Shirley asked, "Is it set?" Ebsen admitted it wasn't. Shirley said, "Let me know when it's set, and I'll learn it." Then she jumped up and rode off in her limo!

I love Buddy Epsens dancing, he is so relaxed and elastic. Shirley Temple was such a good dancer, I wonder if she still liked to dance as an adult.
