Shirley Temple - At the Codfish Ball

Although I loved her dancing with Bill Robinson in her other films, "At The Codfish Ball" with Buddy Ebson was my very favorite...I think because the dancing was a little more "involved". She was, indeed, so adorable & talented. Best of all, there was never any dirt or scandals in Shirley's life (unlike so many other actors and actresses over the years).

@LiamSwan100 they didn't..this was remastered later..all of these were black and white and then remastered to color and better crisper sound

@LiamSwan100 Actually, there are some color movies dating back to the 1920's. But they used a different color process, which didn't look nearly as good as when color made its serious debut in films like Gone with the Wind and Wizard of Oz, both from 1939.

That said, this Shirley Temple movie, Captain January, was filmed in black & white. The video you see was colorized in more recent years.

A lot of people dislike colorization, but I think in films like this, it's a real enhancement.

Shirley Temple later said that this was the most difficult dance number that she ever did... it was done all in one take and she was only 9 years old. Amazing!

@SabrinaFairForever Actually, she was seven. According the Rita Dubas book, this was filmed in late 1935. Apparently, it took only a month to film. Amazing!

There has never been any child actor since that could come close to her ability to croone a tune, act and hoof it with the best dancers of her time. Despite the depression, what a wonderful time for movie go-ers- where a quarter could buy you escape from your troubles watching this remarkable little girl. What a trouper she was, always.

Buddy Ebsen tells in his autobio the funniest story about how mature Shirley was. It was up to him to choreograph this number, but he couldn't get any reherasal time with Shirley; she was too busy. Finally he was able to show it to her at the Fox dance studio, and she liked it. "Come on, I'll teach it to you," he said. Eight-year-old Shirley asked, "Is it set?" Ebsen admitted it wasn't. Shirley said, "Let me know when it's set, and I'll learn it." Then she jumped up and rode off in her limo!
