@92Mihajlo You want FSX and get the acceleration addon then search google for "fsx acceleration flight plans", its the first link you see. Then load one of the flight plans and choose the Hornet and take off from airport and look around, the carriers are always close to the airport.
@jackop9111 Aircraft carriers have a special arresting gear to stop the landing aircraft - it consists of four wires spanned across the landing area. Carrier based aircraft have a special tail hook which must catch one of the four wires to stop the aircraft. If you miss the wires you cannot stop. That's why the moment you touch the deck you give full power and be ready to take-off.
@jackop9111 The aircraft is the Acceleration pack F/A-18 Hornet. I have put a special HUD, but everything else is the same. My PC is getting a little old now, but for FSX is stil great - CPU Intel Core 2 Duo @ 3.80GHz, nVidia GeForce 9800 GTX+, RAM 4 GB.
@Legendary588 Hi, a good tutorial will take a lot of time, may be a will do one in the future. I think if you read the readme carefully - the part where you select the frequencies - you will have no trouble getting the ILS/TCN. I tried to explain it in detail.
@degigi2003 Ok thanks, I tried tuning the frequencies like any other time I switch frequencies, so I would input 111.00 or 112.00, but on the panel it would read "error" and return to the previous frequency. I don't know what I was doing wrong but It would not work with both Javier's (spelling?) carrier or the default Acceleration carrier.
@Legendary588 OK, the problem is with the default Hornet's UFC. Can you try entering the frequencies as TCN channels - 47X for the default carrier and 57X for Javier's Nimitz... You just press 5, 7 and X on the UFC.
@Legendary588 To get the steering arrow you have to call the HUD 2D control panel (Shift+2) and then put the steering switch to NAV1. From the control panel you can also switch the ILS needles on and off, as well as other options.
@SuperIjoker The FSRecorder does not record the carrier. But when you use the carrier mission, the carrier will be there because the mission system is driving it.
@degigi2003 Yeah my Fs recorder doesnt work, so i tried to use the default FS video recording software, it shows the carrier, but because i have to make the carrier Static, on playback it basically goes retarded, so what i have to do is record using FRAPS Live, which is kind of hard...
@SuperIjoker That's really bad news. Using FSRecorder+Carrier Mission is the ONLY way to get a replay of your flight around a carrier. Of course you can always record your landings live with FRAPS, but you will only have a view from the cockpit. I use this method very often when I practice something or test a HUD feature. For creating videos of youtube, it is a little limiting.
@GOM3RPLY3R The wind was set at 12 knots with gusts up to 15 knots ;) This makes a total of about 35kts wind over deck. This is even a bit low for a 4.0 degree glideslope.
@degigi2003 Just a overall question about aicarriers2. Why doesnt the Nimitz show up in replays, is there anyway i can make it show up, since FSrecorder for me does not work. And also is there anyway i can get tower views on board the Carriers? I dont want to do it on the multiplayer nimitz since you have to land the aircraft live from the tower view. Also what did you record with?
@SuperIjoker Hi, I don't use aicarriers2 for videos. I use the Carrier Practice mission and FSRecorder - this is the only way to have a replay of your flight AND the carrier. The normal replay will not work, because it only records your aircraft, it does not record air traffic or boat traffic. But if you start the mission from the same place that you started FSRecorder, and immediately play the recording - the flight and the boat (which moves in real time) will be synchronized :)
@Metallofusoestrafuso Do you see the distance to the carrier in the lower right corner of the HUD, for example "2.3 TCN", which means 2.3 n. miles from the carrier.
@Metallofusoestrafuso The ILS needles will appear if you are facing the carrier as in the video. If you are too far left or right or high, they won't show. Make sure you follow the procedure in the readme - set the correct NAV1 frequency (112.00 MHz for the Nimitz carrier and 111.00 MHz for the default carrier) - and you should see the distance and the ILS needles, when in range.
@SilverS21995 Hi, the ILS will not appear automatically. You need to tune the NAV radio to the carrier frequency. There are detailed instructions in the readme file. Try one of the Shift+1..2..3 combinations and see if you have the Cessna Radio Stack. Then you just enter 112.00 MHz for the NAV1 frequency. You should immediately see the distance to the carrier in the lower right of the HUD (e.g. 1.5 TCN means 1.5 n.miles). Once you get behind the carrier, you will see the ILS needles :)
@SuperIjoker You must have the special HUD, the download link is in the description. You can also download the Combat Hornet version, which has the HUD installed but also features a realistic air-to-air gun mode :)
excellent video, very realistic. If you like naval aviation, then I would 100% recommend that you read Ironclaw By Sherman Baldwin. It is an amazing book about a prowler pilot on the USS Midway during the first Gulf War. Absolutely amazing book.
@Stryker365 First part is just instrument flying - it's a thrill, the best part is the last 5-10 seconds where even a slight loss of concentration or a late reaction can mess up a perfectly good approach and you will see the ramp in your face :D In this approach if I hadn't come a little left at 00:58 but a second later, I would have probably messed the approach entirely because I would need much larger corrections later. It's not as critical further away form the boat.
Hey :) Very Nice video and realistic. I am looking for some professional people to do Carrier ops with and such and was wondering if you could join you. I would Love to do realistic coms and flying. Been looking so hard and cant find anyone :( pls let me no :) once again Great vid
@bleyland629 Hi, you will fly a very dedicated people who want to fly realistic carrier patterns and communications at the "Unofficial F/A-18 Acceleration Pack board". You can just start a new topic or check into some of the others. They are also developing a mission for evaluating carrier landings with LSO calls and grades :)
@gtahunter32 Press Shift+Q to extend the tailhook. All airplanes that land on a carrier have a tailhook to arrest (stop) their movement when they land. The tailhook catches one of the four wires (cables) on the deck. If you don't catch any of the wires, you have to go around for a second approach.
Hey degigi2003, I'm sorry to boother you again, but I need to ask you something lol. I tried to land in the exact same conditions you are landing here (minimal visibility, overcast, moderate wind (?)), but I'm facing a major difficulty... I can't land, as hard as I try, simply because I don't know if I'm lined up with the runway. The Heading Marker on the top of the HUD shows you where the carrier is, but not if you're lined up its runway. How can I see that? Thank you.
@intruderalert01 Hey, no problem. Why don't you use the ILS? It will help you line up with the runway in low visibility or if you are too far from the boat and cannot see the deck. There is also a group of red vertical lights arranged on the aft end of the ship - if you are properly lined up these lights will be on the same line as the deck center line. You can see them in the video from 2:10 (not lined up) to 2:17 (lined up). It is just another visual cue.
@degigi2003 I'm using the ILS, but the needle doesnt indicates me if I'm lined up with the runway or not. And the "ball" only "says" if my glideslope angle is correct... With zero visibility, the "ball" is somehow useless. How do you now if you are lined up with the center of the runway? How do you know if you're not landing 6 feet to the left/right? This is my problem. Thanks for the answer anyway :)
@intruderalert01 This is exactly what the needles are for. They are referenced to the velocity vector. The horizontal needle (called glideslope needle) shows if you are how or low. If you velocity vector is below the glideslope needle, you are below glideslope and need to climb a little. If the vector is above the needle - you are high. The further your vector is from the needle - the further you are from glideslope.
@intruderalert01 Same for the vertical needle (localizer needle). If the vector is left of the needle - you are lined up left of the runway. If the needles cross on the vector - you are exactly on glideslope, on centerline. You can watch my Clemenacau video - see how I am lined up all the way to touch down.
I watched this video hundreds os times, and finally, last night, i succeeded on performing five 3-wire carrier landings in a row with a safe vertical speed and 130 knots of airspeed. Thank you degigi2003.
@intruderalert01 Wow, I am glad :) I really started learning FSX because of the carrier operations. They are so challenging because there so many variables and that makes the approach and landing different every single time. No matter how many times you do them, if you are not focused 100% you can never get an OK3. That's why I still enjoy them :) You should really try the night landing at zero visibility as in the video - you will feel your heart start bumping at around 0.3 miles :)))
@duby901 No, this is FSX = Flight Simulator X. There are no carrier missions in FS2004. I think you can still put a carrier there (USS Enterprise by AlphaSim), but you need a special program to make the aircraft stop on deck.
@duby901 This carrier is from the Carrier Practice mission - just check the missions. I suggest you first try the Carrier Tutorial mission, it is easier because there is no turbulence.
Wow those were both awesome landings, especially the first. There was no visibility until the last few hundred yards! All instruments! Favorited and subscribed!
With 130 knots of airspeed, gear down, full flaps and armed hook, somehow, I'm unable to mantain a vertical airspeed within the gear's safety limits (>800). Every time I try to do that, I strat falling like a rock. Usually, I fly the last 1/4 mile with 140 knots, and when I'm about to hit the deck, I slow down to 130. Can you tell me how to mantain a safe vertical airspeed, without flying at 140 knots, so I can perform a 3 wire landing?
@intruderalert01 In your F/A-18 aircraft.cfg find the sections [flaps.0] and [flaps.1]. There is a line "maneuvering_flaps=1" in both sections. Change this line to "maneuvering_flaps=0". This will allow manual control of the flaps. The default setting is auto-flaps, but the FSX auto flap system is wrong for the Hornet and the flaps cannot extend fully as you press F8 (full flaps). With manual when you press F8 they will extend fully and will give you the proper lift at the approach speed.
@DreamAboutSpace If you are talking about the flaps change - it only affects the Hornet, because you only change its aircraft.cfg file and you only need to open the file and make the change once. Every other plane will behave as usual.
@trollydodger Hi, yes, you can find them, google this - "Aircraft carrier in default scenery" - the page describes where the carriers are. Even better however, is to use a small free program called "aicarriers2", which allows you to place and control aircraft carriers anywhere you want in free flight.
@trollydodger Yes, this is for Acceleration carriers. The aicarriers program simply lets you put the carrier where and when you want it, then it's like a normal carrier. You can place any carriers you have - the default one, the Nimitz by Javier Fernandez (that I use in the video) or the French Clemenceau.
After trying just regular carrier landings quite a few times now (more than a few ramp strikes :) , I can appreciate just exactly how difficult your high speed carrier break landing is! Nice!! BTW What kind of throttle and stick are you using? It would be nice if there was a landing gains feature in an F/A-18 like an F-16 (much less stick sensitivity when landing gear down) but I suppose that's only possible with fly-by-wire controls.
@astrofly I have Saitek X52 Pro. Here are a couple of things you can do to actually make your landings more realistic and yet, easier - 1) you must change your weather so that you completely remove turbulence - there is no turbulence over water and your aircraft won't go up and down like crazy; 2) reduce your fuel to 50-75%. Above 75% fuel you are above the max trap weight and your landing speed is very high;
@degigi2003 Thanks for the tips. I don't see any way to change the fuel load before a mission. Only free flight seems to have that option. Do you mean dump fuel during the mission? Also, for some reason you can't record your flight during missions. Is there any way?
@astrofly Just before you enter the mission, at the bottom of the selection screen, there is an option "allow changes in the mission" - click that option and you will be able to change weather, aircraft, fuel etc. in the mission. After you make some changes, you can also save the mission, and then load the save. You cannot replay or record a flight in a mission. To record flights, you need a program called FSRecorder, this is what I use in my videos. I also use it in free flight.
@astrofly 3) Go to your FA-18 folder, open the aircraft.cfg file in notepad and find the sections [flaps.0] and [flaps.1], change "maneuvering_flaps=1" to "maneuvering_flaps=0". This allows you to fully extend your flaps (F8) when landing. With the default setting you are on auto flaps and they do not extend fully, and your landing speed is higher.
@astrofly 4) In the aircraft.cfg add these two lines:
[tailhook]
cable_force_adjust = 0.68
This allows for smoother deceleration when landing in line with the actual Hornet deceleration times. The default setting results in a very short and abrupt stop.
And finally the biggest secret to carrier landings is properly trimming your aircraft :) If it is not properly trimmed, you will find your self constantly pulling back on the joystick and you can never fly a straight line.
@astrofly Yes, you need the Gold Edition because it includes aircraft carriers and the F/A-18 Hornet. The default carrier is not very detailed, so you want to get the freeware Nimitz by Javier. The HUD you need because it's really awesome and very realistic :) No problem to run it on Windows 7 and it does support TrackIR. Of course you will need a joystick with throttle :) If you have any questions about FSX carrier landings, check the "Unofficial F/A-18 Acceleration Pack" board.
@degigi2003 Hey I bought FSX Gold ed. and got the HUD, carrier, and AIcarrier. Thanks! Is there a way to permanently change the carrier practice mission so that it has the Javier carrier with jets on deck? Also, is there a way to record my landings so I can view them from the deck? FSX won't work with my TrackIR 1 :( They are forcing an upgrade to TrackIR 4. Have you tried Janes F/A-18?
In my opinion, this is a great example of how carrier landings should be done. Sometimes though I get confused with all of the different bits of information that I read around though. Have you ever considered making a carrier tutorial video or editing this video to have narations, subtitles, etc.?
@guydood123 Yes, I thought about this a while ago. I thought of doing a carrier landing tutorial with voice-over and different views, starting from the take-off, the pattern and the final. But it's really a lot of work, there is a lot to cover, at least 20 minutes, may be 30. I wasn't sure if people will want to watch it, so I just gave it up. The best tutorial I know, which is a must see, is the OK3 tutorial by the FSX Blue Angels, you can find it on their website.
@jjtc100 Hi, obviously you don't have permission to change anything in these folders, and I am not sure exactly how to get this permission. You may check Properties->Security of the folder you are accessing (for example the main Flight Simulator X folder) and give yourself Full Control. You can get a quick help on this issue on any of the flight sim forums, for example Flightsim, Sim-outhouse, Avsim or the "Unofficial F/A-18 Acceleration Pack board".
@jjtc100 OK, if you have Windows 7, try this: 1) Go to "Microsoft Flight Simulator X" folder 2) Right click Properties->Security->Edit 3) In the list of users, find your name and select it, it should be below Administrators 4) In the Permissions below click "Full control" and then click OK. This should do it :)
Hey degigi 2003, where did you get those radio communications? Is that a sound pack or something? If so, can you tell me were can I get those? Thank you.
@intruderalert01 Hi, I took them from a couple of youtube videos of real Hornet carrier landings. So they cannot be readily used in the simulator. You can easily find such videos here.
@TesaRossA057 Hi, the frequency for the default carrier is 111.00 MHz and for Javier's Nimitz - 112.00 MHz. You need to enter it as a NAV1 frequency. Check again the readme for a more detailed explanation of the procedure.
@XDrifter2 Hi, there is a lot of information about carrier landings that will make such tutorial very big. You can visit the "Unofficial F/A-18 Acceleration Pack board" and ask any question you have there - it is the best forum about carrier landings in FSX.
@XDrifter2 To see the TACAN arrow, you must put the Steering Switch on the HUD Control Panel to NAV1. The arrow shows the direction of the carrier course (it's called Basic Recovery Course) as seen from above. If the arrow is pointing up, you are moving parallel to the carrier course, if it is pointing down - you are on the opposite course. If it is to the right of the velocity vector - you are to the right of the course, if it is left - you are left off course.
@Podaliny You open the HUD Control Panel with Shift+2. You will see a switch that you can put to NAV1, NAV2, GPS - you need to put it to NAV1. Then you have to tune the NAV1 radio. You can do this by pressing the 'TCN' button on the Hornet UFC panel, then dial 5-7 and pres the 'X' button - this will tune the NAV1 radio to TACAN channel 57X. This is the frequency for Javier's Nimitz.
@metaxakis80 Hi, if you have the HUD, that's all you need - the frequency for Javier's carrier is 112.00 MHz. You should immediately see the distance to the carrier in the lower right corner of the HUD.
@beroth1 I like the Sludge Hornet better, except for the modified power to drag ratio, which makes it really hard to fly at approach speeds, you too often have to go to afterburner to keep the jet from stalling and if you lose track of your speed for just a second you can screw your landing completely. Also if you are practicing air combat against an Acceleration Hornet, you will lose because you are slower :)
@CPOSerrano Yes, it is designed for FSX, I don't know why it is in the FS2004 section, probably a mistake. You need FSX Acceleration or SP2 to run it.
@TheGrouchyCat What you see is Flight Simulator X + Acceleration Pack, you can get them together as FSX Gold Edition for $29.95. Everything else you see is free add-ons - the carrier, the special HUD display, the slightly modified F/A-18 Hornet. I have to admit I bought this game (and a PC for it) one year ago because I always wanted to do carrier landings and I was never disappointed :) It's really good to learn proper flying, but no combat stuff like missiles.
Quick question, Everytime i land on the carrier, as soon as i touch down and catch a wire, either the right side or left side of my landing gear gave out and the aircraft starts to lean right or left and crash. Is there a way to fix this? and i have my realism set all the way up, idk if its the carrier or the aircraft
@Extreme1567 Yes, there is: 1) go to your aircraft.cfg file inside your FA-18 folder and add these two lines:
[tailhook]
cable_force_adjust = 0.68
This setting will give the aircraft a little more time to decelerate (about a second longer), actually the same as in the real aircraft. The default setting of 1.0 stops the aircraft too hard and causes it to be unstable. I use this setting in both my landings in the video.
good landing, looking forward to trying this, not tried it since the amiga 500 days.

Hey did you use VFR for this? XDDD jk
Stryker365 8 months ago
@Stryker365 First part is just instrument flying - it's a thrill, the best part is the last 5-10 seconds where even a slight loss of concentration or a late reaction can mess up a perfectly good approach and you will see the ramp in your face :D In this approach if I hadn't come a little left at 00:58 but a second later, I would have probably messed the approach entirely because I would need much larger corrections later. It's not as critical further away form the boat.

How can u brake so fast with FA-18? I mean what have to press :P
gtahunter32 9 months ago

Thank you.
intruderalert01 11 months ago
@intruderalert01 Hey, no problem. Why don't you use the ILS? It will help you line up with the runway in low visibility or if you are too far from the boat and cannot see the deck. There is also a group of red vertical lights arranged on the aft end of the ship - if you are properly lined up these lights will be on the same line as the deck center line. You can see them in the video from 2:10 (not lined up) to 2:17 (lined up). It is just another visual cue.
degigi2003 11 months ago
@degigi2003 I'm using the ILS, but the needle doesnt indicates me if I'm lined up with the runway or not. And the "ball" only "says" if my glideslope angle is correct... With zero visibility, the "ball" is somehow useless. How do you now if you are lined up with the center of the runway? How do you know if you're not landing 6 feet to the left/right? This is my problem. Thanks for the answer anyway :)
intruderalert01 11 months ago
@intruderalert01 This is exactly what the needles are for. They are referenced to the velocity vector. The horizontal needle (called glideslope needle) shows if you are how or low. If you velocity vector is below the glideslope needle, you are below glideslope and need to climb a little. If the vector is above the needle - you are high. The further your vector is from the needle - the further you are from glideslope.
degigi2003 11 months ago
@degigi2003 Oh, ok. Got it! Thanks again!
intruderalert01 11 months ago
@intruderalert01 Same for the vertical needle (localizer needle). If the vector is left of the needle - you are lined up left of the runway. If the needles cross on the vector - you are exactly on glideslope, on centerline. You can watch my Clemenacau video - see how I am lined up all the way to touch down.
degigi2003 11 months ago
I watched this video hundreds os times, and finally, last night, i succeeded on performing five 3-wire carrier landings in a row with a safe vertical speed and 130 knots of airspeed. Thank you degigi2003.
intruderalert01 1 year ago
@intruderalert01 Wow, I am glad :) I really started learning FSX because of the carrier operations. They are so challenging because there so many variables and that makes the approach and landing different every single time. No matter how many times you do them, if you are not focused 100% you can never get an OK3. That's why I still enjoy them :) You should really try the night landing at zero visibility as in the video - you will feel your heart start bumping at around 0.3 miles :)))

@degigi2003 Ok, I'll give it a try today! Thank you :)

I got fs2004 is it in mission there
duby901 1 year ago
@duby901 No, this is FSX = Flight Simulator X. There are no carrier missions in FS2004. I think you can still put a carrier there (USS Enterprise by AlphaSim), but you need a special program to make the aircraft stop on deck.
degigi2003 1 year ago
Guys what the code for this airport/carrier I wanna go there
duby901 1 year ago
@duby901 This carrier is from the Carrier Practice mission - just check the missions. I suggest you first try the Carrier Tutorial mission, it is easier because there is no turbulence.
degigi2003 1 year ago
Wow those were both awesome landings, especially the first. There was no visibility until the last few hundred yards! All instruments! Favorited and subscribed!
greentea1494 1 year ago
With 130 knots of airspeed, gear down, full flaps and armed hook, somehow, I'm unable to mantain a vertical airspeed within the gear's safety limits (>800). Every time I try to do that, I strat falling like a rock. Usually, I fly the last 1/4 mile with 140 knots, and when I'm about to hit the deck, I slow down to 130. Can you tell me how to mantain a safe vertical airspeed, without flying at 140 knots, so I can perform a 3 wire landing?
PS: I use the same HUD as yours.
intruderalert01 1 year ago
@intruderalert01 In your F/A-18 aircraft.cfg find the sections [flaps.0] and [flaps.1]. There is a line "maneuvering_flaps=1" in both sections. Change this line to "maneuvering_flaps=0". This will allow manual control of the flaps. The default setting is auto-flaps, but the FSX auto flap system is wrong for the Hornet and the flaps cannot extend fully as you press F8 (full flaps). With manual when you press F8 they will extend fully and will give you the proper lift at the approach speed.
degigi2003 1 year ago
@degigi2003 Oh, so I guess this is the problem. Thank you for your answer.
intruderalert01 1 year ago
@degigi2003 do you have to change back every time you fly another plane then the hornet?
DreamAboutSpace 1 year ago
@DreamAboutSpace If you are talking about the flaps change - it only affects the Hornet, because you only change its aircraft.cfg file and you only need to open the file and make the change once. Every other plane will behave as usual.

i have fsx acceleration, can you find these carriers in free flight?
trollydodger 1 year ago
@trollydodger Hi, yes, you can find them, google this - "Aircraft carrier in default scenery" - the page describes where the carriers are. Even better however, is to use a small free program called "aicarriers2", which allows you to place and control aircraft carriers anywhere you want in free flight.
degigi2003 1 year ago
@degigi2003 Hello, thank you, and this is for use with the acceleration carriers in which you can use the catapult?
Thanks
trollydodger 1 year ago
@trollydodger Yes, this is for Acceleration carriers. The aicarriers program simply lets you put the carrier where and when you want it, then it's like a normal carrier. You can place any carriers you have - the default one, the Nimitz by Javier Fernandez (that I use in the video) or the French Clemenceau.

degigi2003 1 year ago
After trying just regular carrier landings quite a few times now (more than a few ramp strikes :) , I can appreciate just exactly how difficult your high speed carrier break landing is! Nice!! BTW What kind of throttle and stick are you using? It would be nice if there was a landing gains feature in an F/A-18 like an F-16 (much less stick sensitivity when landing gear down) but I suppose that's only possible with fly-by-wire controls.
astrofly 1 year ago
@astrofly I have Saitek X52 Pro. Here are a couple of things you can do to actually make your landings more realistic and yet, easier - 1) you must change your weather so that you completely remove turbulence - there is no turbulence over water and your aircraft won't go up and down like crazy; 2) reduce your fuel to 50-75%. Above 75% fuel you are above the max trap weight and your landing speed is very high;
degigi2003 1 year ago
@degigi2003 Thanks for the tips. I don't see any way to change the fuel load before a mission. Only free flight seems to have that option. Do you mean dump fuel during the mission? Also, for some reason you can't record your flight during missions. Is there any way?
astrofly 1 year ago
@astrofly Just before you enter the mission, at the bottom of the selection screen, there is an option "allow changes in the mission" - click that option and you will be able to change weather, aircraft, fuel etc. in the mission. After you make some changes, you can also save the mission, and then load the save. You cannot replay or record a flight in a mission. To record flights, you need a program called FSRecorder, this is what I use in my videos. I also use it in free flight.
degigi2003 1 year ago
@astrofly 3) Go to your FA-18 folder, open the aircraft.cfg file in notepad and find the sections [flaps.0] and [flaps.1], change "maneuvering_flaps=1" to "maneuvering_flaps=0". This allows you to fully extend your flaps (F8) when landing. With the default setting you are on auto flaps and they do not extend fully, and your landing speed is higher.
degigi2003 1 year ago
@astrofly 4) In the aircraft.cfg add these two lines:
[tailhook]
cable_force_adjust = 0.68

Of course you will need a joystick with throttle :) If you have any questions about FSX carrier landings, check the "Unofficial F/A-18 Acceleration Pack" board.
degigi2003 1 year ago
@degigi2003 Hey I bought FSX Gold ed. and got the HUD, carrier, and AIcarrier. Thanks! Is there a way to permanently change the carrier practice mission so that it has the Javier carrier with jets on deck? Also, is there a way to record my landings so I can view them from the deck? FSX won't work with my TrackIR 1 :( They are forcing an upgrade to TrackIR 4. Have you tried Janes F/A-18?
astrofly 1 year ago
In my opinion, this is a great example of how carrier landings should be done. Sometimes though I get confused with all of the different bits of information that I read around though. Have you ever considered making a carrier tutorial video or editing this video to have narations, subtitles, etc.?
guydood123 1 year ago

You can get a quick help on this issue on any of the flight sim forums, for example Flightsim, Sim-outhouse, Avsim or the "Unofficial F/A-18 Acceleration Pack board".
degigi2003 1 year ago
@degigi2003 i go to the folder and then properties, but there i can't find where i give myself full control
jjtc100 1 year ago
@jjtc100 OK, if you have Windows 7, try this: 1) Go to "Microsoft Flight Simulator X" folder 2) Right click Properties->Security->Edit 3) In the list of users, find your name and select it, it should be below Administrators 4) In the Permissions below click "Full control" and then click OK. This should do it :)

@XDrifter2 Hi, there is a lot of information about carrier landings that will make such tutorial very big. You can visit the "Unofficial F/A-18 Acceleration Pack board" and ask any question you have there - it is the best forum about carrier landings in FSX.
degigi2003 1 year ago
@degigi2003 i meant to ask how do you use tacan
XDrifter2 1 year ago
@XDrifter2 To see the TACAN arrow, you must put the Steering Switch on the HUD Control Panel to NAV1. The arrow shows the direction of the carrier course (it's called Basic Recovery Course) as seen from above. If the arrow is pointing up, you are moving parallel to the carrier course, if it is pointing down - you are on the opposite course. If it is to the right of the velocity vector - you are to the right of the course, if it is left - you are left off course.
degigi2003 1 year ago
@degigi2003 i cannot get that arrow up at all, con you be more specific please?
Podaliny 10 months ago
@Podaliny You open the HUD Control Panel with Shift+2. You will see a switch that you can put to NAV1, NAV2, GPS - you need to put it to NAV1. Then you have to tune the NAV1 radio. You can do this by pressing the 'TCN' button on the Hornet UFC panel, then dial 5-7 and pres the 'X' button - this will tune the NAV1 radio to TACAN channel 57X. This is the frequency for Javier's Nimitz.

@beroth1 No, this is not the 'Sludge' Hornet.
degigi2003 1 year ago
@degigi2003 Do you prefer the Acceleration version over the other?
beroth1 1 year ago
@beroth1 I like the Sludge Hornet better, except for the modified power to drag ratio, which makes it really hard to fly at approach speeds, you too often have to go to afterburner to keep the jet from stalling and if you lose track of your speed for just a second you can screw your landing completely. Also if you are practicing air combat against an Acceleration Hornet, you will lose because you are slower :)
degigi2003 1 year ago
and your link to the carrier is for fs2004.. does it work with fsx?
CPOSerrano 1 year ago
@CPOSerrano Yes, it is designed for FSX, I don't know why it is in the FS2004 section, probably a mistake. You need FSX Acceleration or SP2 to run it.

TheGrouchyCat 1 year ago
@TheGrouchyCat What you see is Flight Simulator X + Acceleration Pack, you can get them together as FSX Gold Edition for $29.95. Everything else you see is free add-ons - the carrier, the special HUD display, the slightly modified F/A-18 Hornet. I have to admit I bought this game (and a PC for it) one year ago because I always wanted to do carrier landings and I was never disappointed :) It's really good to learn proper flying, but no combat stuff like missiles.
degigi2003 1 year ago
Quick question, Everytime i land on the carrier, as soon as i touch down and catch a wire, either the right side or left side of my landing gear gave out and the aircraft starts to lean right or left and crash. Is there a way to fix this? and i have my realism set all the way up, idk if its the carrier or the aircraft
Extreme1567 1 year ago
@Extreme1567 Yes, there is: 1) go to your aircraft.cfg file inside your FA-18 folder and add these two lines:
[tailhook]
cable_force_adjust = 0.68
This setting will give the aircraft a little more time to decelerate (about a second longer), actually the same as in the real aircraft. The default setting of 1.0 stops the aircraft too hard and causes it to be unstable. I use this setting in both my landings in the video.
