It's not really recommended that you perform leaf pullings at the same time as re potting or plant division. You are already giving it massive stress by uprooting it and it will likely weaken for a few weeks, even without leaf pullings. Leaf pullings should be performed when the plant is at its peak.
You cannot use potting soil. Carnivorous plants cannot tolerate soils with any nutrients. Peat moss is the basic medium for venus flytrap propagation.
@yizak2 let's think about it again, I would say. The plant eats the soft parts (namely the internal stuffs), so do you think the insect will still be happily alive?
My VFT has caught countless spiders already and I must say all of them very seriously died after being digested...
@coolpokemonranger salt burn, check if you are using miracle grow potting mix the fertilizer will kill them. Or check the trigger hairs, if they are brown they are dead and unresponsive
hi, i find ur videos very helpful but the video quality should be much greater for those shots where u show how to do the leaf cutting and also have for that kind of scenes better light =) ............ anyway good information thanks
Oh let me add more info u can by a fly trap from the garden centers at either walmart or target and there under $5.00 so i bought mine for $3.50 sweet deal hope this helps
i live in florida rains alot so i used rain water i spray it it's better so you dont over water when it doesnt rain i use distilled water or spring water
I just got my first flytrap, and all these videos were really helpful...especially with propogation, as I was pretty darn clueless about (I can't wait until I get little flytraps!!)
By the way, I'll only use distilled water for the flytrap. Tap water (even filtered tap water) seemingly has way too much junk in it that plants don't like.
You are totally wrong. Distilled water is like shit to the fly trap. There is nothing in it that the plant wants, its almost nothing. Tap water can be used to the plant and all you have to do is leave it 48 hours open. It wont kill the plant.
no boil water and get a container and put it over the steam comeing out of the pot and it will fog up put it down and as the stem cools it will turn to water
Whack a fly lightly, as to stun it...dont squash it! then while it's still partially moving you feed it to your plant, that leg movements of the fly/bug, will ofcourse trigger the hairs of the trap and voila your plant has a free meal!!!!
dead insect's are no use unless you keep triggering the hairs over and over, couse it will close but wont start diggesting it, it'll reopen unless it gets stimulated enough to know for certain there's a bug in there ;)
If you get plants for Lowes or Home Depot be sure to get them soon after they receive them. None of these places know how to care for the plants and they will start to kill them off almost immediately. After you get them... be SURE to NOT use tap water. Use distilled water on carnivorous plants and never let them dry out.
Yes... basically any city water is bad. Chemicals are added to the water for us humans, but carnivorous plants do not like them. It will not instantly kill them, but the salts and such will collect in the growing medium and over time kill the roots. Only use collected rain water or distilled water that has no salts or chlorene.
Well you can use tap water, though you have to let the water stand a day or so, so that the chlorine evaporates, have my plant for years now and have just been using this way of watering my plant.
It depends on your local water... but there will be salts and other minerals that will eventually collect. If you are growing in the tray method then it may not be so bad but if you were growing in a terrarium or other non draining and/or direct water in the growing medium... I would advise against it. Glad to hear yours is doing well so far though.

It didn't let the insect die, they only eat the soft part and let the outer body to attract other insects.

Distilled H2o is OK to use though VFT's always prefer rain water and plenty of direct sunlight. Never give them tap water.
