In Taiwan, when you joined the army before basic training, you are unranked (lowest of low). Since all the DOGS kept by the armed forces here has an official rank of private third-class, trainees are supposed to salute them dogs (no one take this seriously though. You receive the rank of private second-class after basic training so you are no longer required to salute dogs).
