i'm not sure if you do the same in Britain, but in America each graduating senior picks a quote for their last high school yearbook that some up their life so far, and I loved this episode so much, I loved the writing, the art, the characters, that for my senior quote I picked the line Vincent says at the end "Look at the sky, it's not black and without character, the black is in fact deep blue..." I loved that scene so much and it is by far one of the best monologues in DW
just those small things yes. after 'professor black's' supreme monologue van gogh kisses him on both the cheeks, but he's from holland, so he would have done it three times.
ooooh never mind, i'm such a whiner. AMAZING episode and the monologue AGAIN made me cry
the only thing i really couldn't stand about this episode was something that had really nothing to do with the episode XD Two things
1) they just couldn't prenounce Van Gogh's name right
2) wtf, Musee d'Orsay? Why not just the Van Gogh museum, here in Amsterdam! The biggest Van Gogh collection in the world! I was hoping for a bit of my home town and then I suddenly recognize the musem and the Doctor introduces us to the museum. Pfft. It's my brothers favourite episode though and I like it too!
Thank you. I have been looking for that end clip tonight, and yours seem to be the only one. (The rest is probably removed because of copyright regulations.) Your review is excellent, and I agree, this is one of the best episodes ever. Though I tried my best to be openminded about series five, I was growing more and more disappointed by Moffat's scripts - and then this episode, I forgave everything.
Yeah, that mirror the doctor uses...I heard that after he regenerated into the second doctor, he looked into the mirror which showed his former self...isn't this the same mirror?
anyone know a link to the actually scene where Vincent, Amy, and the doctor lie down and watch the stars? without any editing or music? like the actual scene from the episode?
Loved it, my favorite of the season. One complaint was my annoyance that everyone kept saying "Van Goff" instead of "Van Goe." It's the worst thing since "The Three Doctors" when they kept calling the villain "OHM-eh-GAH." Learn how to pronounce common words and names!
@aperson22222 Vincent van Gogh is a artist from my country, the right pronounion of Van GoKG i never understood why but clearly thats to hard to pronounce, in some countrys they speak of Van Goe, or Goff. It wasnt realy a bother in this episode to.
While I certainly enjoyed the episode I found the ending speech on Van Gogh's place in the history of art to be a bit over the top. Also, I don't particularly care for the hate on The Beast Below and Love and Monsters, though I know I'm in the minority on those.
this episode was incredibly moving. i live in the u.s. and i only wish we had more shows like this :(. i just have one favor to ask. can you tell me the name of the song played in the ending?

i have a question at the end of the episode when the chicken thing wasnt in the pic wouldnt that chance the out come because the reason he went to that time period is because of the chicken thing in the picture
Every Time I watch this episode and in particular the final scenes I always get a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. Great episode. In fact it is in my top 3 favourite episodes. Great review for a great episode. Well done mate.
FOUND THE SONG!!!!!!! After 10-15 minutes on Google I found a website that said it was Chances from a band called Athlete. I checked on iTunes...IT'S THE REAL THING!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Definitely one of the best new Who episodes produced. It's as you say, got everything. Very funny moments, combined with serious and sometimes moving moments.
The final scenes particularly moved me, it was incredible acting on all 3 cast members, reaction shots were excellent, music was brilliant.
One continuity problem though, and typical lad, I noticed this :P Karen Gillan's legs in some of the church/churchyard scenes. That's all i'll say... haha!
Curran's performance pushes the episode higher, though the monster wasn't the best I've seen. His scenes with Amy--breathless. When Vincent goes to the D'Orsay...beautiful. I'd argue Kirk Douglas looks more like Van Gogh than Curran does. A 6/10 due to the issue I had with making Van Gogh's mental health a plot device to seeing monsters. That troubled me. Again, will reevaluate once on DVD.
wait a minute! @ 2:40 amy says they've been to arcadia (yeah the video game planet, but not really) in the series 2 finale 'doomsday' the doctor says "i was there at the fall of arcadia" meaning it was blown up or something in the time-war
Multiple names, Arcadia could simply be a name of a planet or place, it's a big universe, it's not irrational to assume that there is more than one place in the whole wide universe named Arcadia. Also there is a place in Greece called Arcadia, so it's more likely she was talking about that.
You're right, this episode is exactly what makes the corny ones worthwhile... I'm not gonna lie- I cry every time I see the ending when they take Vincent to the museum. Pure magic! =]
I think the main thing on this particular episode was that it actually touched on mental illness in particular Vincents Bipolar Disorder and his untimely Death.
I have to say, I didn't think that I would like this episode all that much. Though I love history, I'm not generally very fond of the way Doctor Who handles episodes like this: episodes about going back in time to meet a specific historical person (like the Shakespeare episode). But I really loved this episode. I don't know what it was, but it was great. One of my favorite episodes this season so far.
@wraithfilms He says his names, but in the ending credits Bill Nighy isn't there. Literally, Bill Nighy - Doctor Black isn't in the credits for some reason
@MrTARDISreviews It's a cameo. Cameos often aren't credited. Frank Langella appeared in the first three episodes of Deep Space Nine season 2 and he was not credited.
@MrTARDISreviews Celebrity cameos often go uncredited. It's seen as, I don't know, artistic or some shit. I guess you're just supposed to recognize them. :P
i love the bits in the show where like the muesuem guy finds out he's talking to V.V.G then's like "nah, just no-one" brings a real mystery to the show
Well emotional scenes are good to have but you don't need them all the time, yeah add a few more but you know, emotional scenes are a bit... well boring.
Okay, you know what? Saw the episode, definately one of the greatest things I have ever seen period. HOWEVER, what is the name of the song? Seriously, its awesome. Love to listen to it alone. ^^; But again, awesome review dude, hoping for more.
Your Reviews are actually amazing. Every time there is a Doctor Who episode, I'll get on Youtube and see your opinion on it, 'cause heck, your opinion matters. Allons-y.
Hey, by the way....you figure out who the villain of the season is? We keep getting hammered every episode about perception filters, being the last of one's kind and/or being left behind or forgotten about! When you couple that with a crack in time and space wiping things out of existence.....then it might just remind you of someone in Who History? I think I got it all figured out, but I'll refrain from posting a potential spoiler! But if I am right...oh, its going to be good.....really good!
@MrTARDISreviews Sure, sent it to you! Got to say... I may not always agree with you 100% (although on this episode I definitely do)! But regardless of whether I agree with a particular episode review or not....I do think you and thebigbluebox have hands down the best Dr Who reviews on youtube! I always enjoy watching them....so kudos!
@TinnedWaffles certain points in time can be manipulated where as others are too important to change..say the choice of food you eat or the shirt you put on, small things like that have little effect on history, killing hitler however would really distort if not destroy time and space..
@GreenPliskin to me thats just fail. "time and space" doesn't "know" the difference between food and thousands of lives :/ Also theres the butterfly effect to 'consider' lol, like even if you say food you eat isn't a big deal, there are allergies people may have or something that may have some convoluted influence on something else. -_- i dunno i just got up so my brains slow atm.
basically i don't like how they've said "some points in time are more important than others"
@TinnedWaffles i'm not going to argue with you so take it somewhere else, or wake up and realise what I said is theoretical to the doctor who storyline not real life fact.
Another excellent review my friend! I think you are starting to change my mind a little bit about this music. Excellent job with the tribute at the end as well. Meh...I need to be less picky about Doctor Who...this WAS an excellent episode....
@TheDoctorWhoNerd Nothing wrong with being picky at all. It makes for good viewing. Plus if everyone was positive all the time with everything (or negative) it would get boring after a while. Being picky like people who refuse to let go of David Tennant is something that deserves to be squashed like a space bug =P
You identified in your review exactly what made this episode such a standout. If it was simply a written piece, you would get full marks. But then, you seized upon the clips and music and moments. You never waste our time with your presentation. F*$%ing brilliant. Again.
I respectfully request your review of "The Eleventh Hour." You have solidly made your voice worth listening to.
@NealKlein The award for best comment goes to NealKlein. Thank you so much for your lovely support. But what do you mean by "never waste out time with your presentation"? I'm just trying to make my videos as good as possible for whoever wants to watch.
My review of 'The Eleventh Hour' will be up in the next 3 weeks (ish) I have exams in the next few weeks, so i am understandably busy. But there WILL be a review soon. Thanks a lot for your support. If i had a cookie, i would give it to you.
@MrTARDISreviews It should have read "waste OUR time" which is something you never do. I think everyone should have a voice and forum for opinions. That said, I sat through several reviews of Matt Smith's episodes on YouTube from other contributors. I found it painful to do. Your reviews are neither totally irreverent nor too serious. I love good writing. Your reviews are tight, sharp, heartfelt, fun, and they resonate with me.
I enjoyed this episode, it was so diverse and different from other doctor who episodes, the cast in general was a real treat to watch, even the glorious Matt Smith had the spotlight taken off of him from Karen Gillian and especially Tony Curran, the setting was also one of the Doctor's finest yet this season, what I enjoyed most was the emotion from Vincent, which was welcoming as it also reflected part of how Amy was feeling, yet she didn't know, however the pace for my liking was a bit fast
I was blown away by how good this episode was. Usually while I watch Doctor Who, the annoying fan part of my brain makes me notice aspects of the episode that don't sit right, like plot-holes, which sometimes takes me out of the experience, but I can say this didn't happen here because I was just enjoying it far too much!
And a 3/10 from TotalSciFiOnline?! I no longer value their opinion.
This episode was perfectly placed in the series. You need these slower-paced, character-driven one-offs in between the kinetic plot-developements, and here we get an episode that cemented the heart of the series. An episode like this just sort of justifies the rest of the it, so when you see the Doctor and Amy running around fighting baddies you're invested in them even more. Speaking as someone who has a friend suffering from depression, I know their pain, and it's an important thing to depict.
This is your best review. And unlike the last episode I completely agree with you on all your points. This episode is a shinning example of what DoctorWho is. Certainly the best episode of the series so far. Having said that I'm really looking forward to James Corden and Daisy Haggard in next weeks episode ( I really liked how the did the preview for it, not giving alot away) and of course the finally ( I 've kept away from any and all spoilers leaking out because I want the surprise).
A simply amazing episode, and simply an amazing review. I loved your continued use of the music with the clips at the end.
You are right, the whole episode was perfect and I actually found myself succuming to tears at the end.
Asside from the whole Van Gough theme I must also say that I loved how they handled the loss of Rory. Particually when they were in the church and the Doctor accidently shouted his name - I thought the whole thing was pulled off very well :)
@xaxarulzx Thanks a lot. You have no idea how hard it was to allign the music with the clips with my commentary (i use Windows Movie Maker and its a nightmare). One of the best and it could earn a spot in my top 10 (or 20, i don't have a concrete list) Doctor Who episodes ever. It's not every episode i do a music tribute for. Lol.
@MrTARDISreviews Same - definatly in my top ten (although I don't think anything will ever be able to beat Blink, which is definatly my all time number one). ^^
Loved this episode!!! I'm a huge History nerd and it love anything that makes me want to go and do my own research and this episode did. I agree that the Monologue by Bill Nighy was FAB! It made me cry to see Vincent's reaction. What did you think of the Phone number at the end...
Totally agree mate! But I will go even farther. This is easily one of the greatest episodes of Doctor Who in all its 47 year run. This episode represents the finest hour of television I have watched this year. If only the last few episodes of Lost and its finale had been so real, so true, so utterly sublime. I guarantee that Richard Curtis will be nominated for a BAFTA for this episode as well as a Hugo Award for this phenomenal story. If doesn't win those awards, it will truly be a sad day!
I would have to agree, great review....I've see some negative reviews, labeling the last ten minutes as emo? And while I was a bit worried when the whole sequence began, it was so well shot and so well acted with a perfect choice of music! That quite frankly....I fail to see how anyone could not be moved by that powerful ending scene! I think this is one of the best, if not best historical based episodes in Who History! Major Props to the actor who played Vincent Van Goth....he really nailed it!
im an action kinda guy but this nice episode was a break from it
it was nice that the doctor showed vvg his future and tried to change his life (if he had lived with someone else he most probably wouldn't commit suicide)
YES! WOOT! What a guy! Thank you! after seeing SO many people slate the irelevent parts of this episode its good to finaly see someone who feels the same way about it. this eposode was fab, I well and truely connected to Van Goth more than any other historical figure potrayed in DW. Top notch review as always mate, keep up the good work.
@MoonWhoReview I just read 2 reviews online giving this episode some really really bad reviews. I suspect that they were watching some other show or they are incredibly stupid. Thanks for the comment and tbh i think this is my best review =D

Seriously. This episode vs...Love and Monsters? No contest is there?

Vincent van gogh: the first emo. seriously!

I'm really loving this Doctor...he reminds me a bit of Patrick Troughton...which is definitely a good thing!

Major Props to the actor who played Vincent Van Goth....he really nailed it!

awesome review
im an action kinda guy but this nice episode was a break from it
it was nice that the doctor showed vvg his future and tried to change his life (if he had lived with someone else he most probably wouldn't commit suicide)

YES! WOOT! What a guy! Thank you! after seeing SO many people slate the irelevent parts of this episode its good to finaly see someone who feels the same way about it. this eposode was fab, I well and truely connected to Van Goth more than any other historical figure potrayed in DW. Top notch review as always mate, keep up the good work.

@MoonWhoReview I just read 2 reviews online giving this episode some really really bad reviews. I suspect that they were watching some other show or they are incredibly stupid. Thanks for the comment and tbh i think this is my best review =D
