  • Beautiful and deep tone, and very tasty arrangement that knows how to swing when it feels like !

I am especially enjoying the way the high strings are popping in the low mids during melodic accents. Which brings my question: is your pickup lowered on the low strings and raised on the high ones, which enables you to dial lots of low frequency on the eq ? Sounds like so but i can't see the angle correctly.

Any kind of compression used besides the natural one from the amp ?

    Thank you !

  • Lovely arrangement and great tone!

  • Leigh...this reminds me so much of my teacher..He played so beautifully...and so do you. This is a gift from God. Thank You

  • If you can arrange 'Stella' like that, I'd say you already know more than enough chords. It's all inversions, and voicing from now on!

Nice playing and accomplished styling. Nice 175 too!

I like this better than say, Methany, who would take it too far out.

Joe Pass would stay to close to the melody.

  • It sounds like 012 flatwounds.

Thomastic george benson or Jazz Swing 0,12 are awesome strings.

  • Amazing. do you play in a band or is this more of a hobby-type thing for you?

  • It's a hobby.

  • You should consider joining a band. You should really good.

  • Hmm, maybe I'll learn a few more chords and then I'll be ready.

  • Haha

  • @jazztube You should come to France and learn Jazz. There is a nice JAzz scene with American and Django influences. GEt out of your safe island and explore! You are to good for staying inside let me tell you you only live once.

  • Have you listened to much Liberace? or Kenny G?

  • @peterDiglin I have heard some of your stuff and Liberace comes through on every song:-)

  • have you listened to any mrs Mills or bananarama?

  • @peterDiglin Mrs Mills, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga and you are my main influences for this type of guitar style. Bananarama is he the president of fiji?

  • Great :

    Great Guitar

    Great Guitarist

    Great Guitar sound

    Great (g r e a t) performance!

  • Mr. Jackson,

Just another voice concurring on the beauty of your performance. May I assume that enough of it was improvised that you do NOT have it written out? If, perchance you do (!?) how about posting it so I might try it on piano?

    Thanks for the lovely performance.

  • very very nice .......Thank You!

  • Great interpretation and also one of the best tones I heard from a jazz guitar on Youtube.

  • Very nice job Leigh! Why should I not be surprised? Because its you Leigh!! Thanks so much for the posting!

  • Bravo.....

  • very nice.

cant get any better tone than that

  • Just beautiful. Thanks for sharing the fingering with such a clear shot of the fretboard.

  • Thank you Leigh. When you come to Brazil I will introduce you to good musicians and composers and we will play bossa nova a lot!!

  • 10 stars from here ! ! ! 8-)

  • I love Lenny Breau. His music has inspired me to want to play more than anyone so far in my musical journey. You my friend, have surpassed him. His sound is respectfully outdated but you... you are beautiful. You play with such great clarity and your choice of tonal movement is uncanny. Thank you for you inspiration to carry on and road that never payed well. (And for good reason)

  • As cordas parecem 0.12.Passei a usar 0.13 e o timbre ficou incrível.Vale a pena.Depois que me acostumei não consigo usar outra na semi-acústica.Very good arrangement, good taste, wonderful tone.

  • Nice. Are these 0.11 strings?

  • Yes, they are D'Angelico 11 gauge flatwounds. The sustain reduces if you go to 12s or 13s and 10s just lose the mellowness.

    Cheers

    Leigh

  • great playing

    robert from france

  • Beautiful! Brought tears to my eyes!

    Greetings from the USA! :-)

  • That would have to be one of the best guitar tones I have ever heard!

  • Man that guitar is outstanding, what a sound, I wish to play some in one of those, one day...

  • Hello Leigh,

Very nice and even sounding guitar. Plus, you have a very nice harmonic concept.

  • Bravo! Très belle interprétation, et quelle merveilleuse gibson! C'est du velour!

  • beautiful

  • I like this song

  • It's like you're being carried by a warm sea wave with your eyes closed.

  • Excellet playing!!! and sense of harmonization Do you study the songs to improvise and reharmonize? I am trying to learn more about chords and solo melody harmony, Check my solo version of stella. Bye

  • you man are really good!!

  • Nice playing, good chord outlining through the solo, you can hear the harmony passing by ... Is there a big jazz scene in new zealand?. Do you have places to play weekly?. I am spanish double bassist thinking on going down there some time, I think it's a beautiful country to live with nice, openminded people.

  • amazing. im gonna learn how to play that next. thanks for the post, you've made the world a better place with that.

  • Beautiful job Leigh! Some of the chord voicings aren't common. Do you formulate them yourself? Very modern. Thank you for the posting.

  • whish you played that on my 1940 Blond ES250, but I sold it years ago

  • Kind of a George Van Eps approach.

I had an older ES-175 with P-90's in it years ago. Wooden bridge etc. Seemed to me that it had a much wider fretboard than any other Gibson I've ever played, including other ES-175's. I sold it at a Nashville guitar show for less than a grand. Of course this was back in the early 80's. But I've never seen another one like it.

We always refer to them as a "working man's guitar". I think the Taylor 314 is kind of the acoustic version of that designation.

  • Fantastic playing! Your sense of harmony is very of a high level. Really listener-friendly jazz solo guitar.

  • Hey, that is awesome...thanks .

  • Do you think there's a distinctive difference between the tone of a 175 and an L-4?

  • nice warm sound from your 175

  • Hi!

    Great job!

    Which amp that you used?

    Thanks.

  • It's a Polytone mini brute from the 70s.

    cheers

    Leigh

  • awesome playing, the best i've seen on youtube. Which amp that you used? Thanks.

  • I am curious what amp you are using with your Gibson? Did you process the sound on this recording? It is so buttery sweet! Great job!

  • Lovely, Truely lovely!

    Very well done sir!

  • Beautiful tone Leigh and great chord voicings. How long does it take you to work something like this up?

  • Thanks so much!

  • Could you explain what you are playing around the 2:30 mark?

    I recognize that sound.

    Thanks!

  • Hi it's a little rhythmic device that I stole from Bill Evans where you go into 3/4 temporarily. In 3/4 the rhythm is an eighth-note followed by a quarter-note followed by an eighth followed by another quarter. you alternate between a bass note and a chord and it gives this effect. Even though it goes into 3/4 it still all works out in 4/4.

    Thanks for listening

    Leigh

  • Thanks.

I was actually wondering more about the harmony in that section, if you could speak on that a bit.

    Sounds great by the way!

  • Ok, it starts with a slash chord of Db/G in the bass which is a substitute for the original G7 then the next chord is C minor 6 with G in the bass which subs for straight c minor. Then instead of Ab7 I use Ebm9/Ab which is like using a sus chord, then to get up to Bb I pass through A diminished which is a sub for F7, Hope this makes sense.

    Best

    Leigh

  • Cool stuff! Especially with the polyrythm.

I was kinda wondering about one thing though, if you don't mind me asking. Is the Cminor6/G really like a Cminor69/G with the D being on top and all. And is the Bb a Bb6?

Like I said really really good stuff. killer chops

  • Yep the Cminor6/G has D on top making it a Cm6/9 over G and the Bb chord has a G in it making it Bb6, good spotting

    Leigh

  • Great ideas. Nice tone. Nice style.

The only thing i'd suggest is to try harmonizing the melody more.

But if that's not what you dig, this is very cool.

  • This is therapy.

  • what a sound...i'm dreaming of a better world, where people love each other, and love music.this is a message of peace

  • how do u get such a nice with webcam i am trying to do this myself so i could upload vids with nice guitar sounds too bro.

  • keep it up leigh.

from your pupil squashy banana at rc

  • big ups, man!

  • Really superb!

  • Outstanding ! Normally I'm not so keen on jazz but this is superb.

  • Very nice, thanks!

  • The major triads with the tritones in the bass were worth the price of admission!

Did you figure out the chord melody for the head ahead of time?

  • beautiful tone, very relaxing.

  • Each time I watch and listen, so beautiful. I'm revived and inspired. Wonderful tone.........

  • awsome job man, real inspiring. got a real nice rare 59 Guild that I will post up sometime

  • you know what amazed me? today i was comparing a 59 175, and two super 400s; 05 and 66. this guitar resonated SO much more. it almost makes wanna dish out the 20 grand for the 59. i expected the 66 400 to kick butt. oh well.

  • UUUGGGGHHHHHHHHH I'M SO CHILLED

  • Excellent job, Leigh! I'll look forward to listening to your solo album! Cheers!

  • music to my ears...awesome!

  • Man, that guitar is in amazing condition for being so old. I sometimes wonder about old guitars that don't have that look as if they have been played a lot. Makes me wonder why it wasn't played so much... But the guitar sounds great, so whoever has owned it this whole time has taken amazing care of it.

  • Sounds like a cup of hot chocolate tastevery warm and sweet.

    Very good work ;-)
