  • how come I never heard about this?

  • @Unclesamslair Yeah...me either.

  • Now they want to haul the coal ash from this spill to our landfill in Scott County. Making a big mess even BIGGER!!

  • I live about 7 miles away from this.I have been plagued with chronic fatigue and headaches so has my 15 yr old son.Our latest blow was my almost 2 year old was just diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. They told us the water was safe and we believed them.I just really want to know if this water is safe or not, because we bath in it ,drink it and all kinds of things.I want to know if the water we are drinking and bathing in is makeing us sick or the air?

  • "Clean coal" doesn't exist. No matter what people say or whatever marketing title they give it...it will never be clean.

It is time for a new energy policy. It is time to take coal off the table and work towards plausible, and realistic solutions that are readily available.

  • I have a route through there and it's bad. Wasn't as big as everyone makes out. The water saturation is the worse. Was good fishing there. Obama and Biden will love it!

  • So do I. You did not know the full scale of this. We're talking about millions of acres of land that was covered in this hazardous waste. They've got it cleaned up pretty good now. Still, I think they are stupid for even building up such a stockpile.

  • Very true rjbonacolta,

These pigs will not regulate themselves!

  • This is what happens when we opt for a "small government". I find it tragic that we have to learn this lesson in such a painful way, but mabye, just mabye, this people will learn that we have to have a shit-ton of government regulation on business if we want to function as a modern nation.

  • Thank you for revisiting this. I'm sure many people, like myself, will have assumed the US would be treating this like a national emergency. We were mistaken.

  • This story isn't worthy enough for any MSM air time.

  • seriously

  • Yeah seriously. I wish I were being sarcastic. This spill is a serious disaster. Yet Americans know more about The Bachelor than this. If you are a stone's throw outside of Kingston Tennessee, chances are you won't know of this issue.

  • i know...sad.

  • I find it quite ironic especially when many Americans blame China and other developing countries for pollution when the US is just as bad.

  • oh ya there is clean coal at work ...

  • Even more reason to use renewable energy, clean coal is absolute bullshit.

  • why is it stupid, its a resource that could be used if managed well, none of the plants in the USA are clean coal ready, none of them filter stacks, none of them trap carbon. How you can offend clean coal when this clearly isnt a case of clean coal use.

  • It's a resource that should be left in the ground. The US has enough solar and wind energy potential to power itself, it's only the powerful oil/coal corporate lobby groups that prevent it from happening.

  • Very true Drexxle,

In face, after the political and cultural up rise of the 1960's very good environmental legislation was passed. All coal power plants were required to have scrubbers by 2000. But when 2000 rolled around Pres. Bush and the republican congress had all of the laws changed and the scrubbers were scrubbed!

When people no long participate in the process big business runs the government for their profit and they do not care about social costs.

  • i cant believe coal ash is not classed as hazardous

  • Americans are ignorant and racist. They are to stupid or to lazy to get involved in their government. They had a system that allowed them to help shape the government and make America a better place to live, but they have just let corporations run their country and take away the civil rights they once had. I should know I am an American. Americans are fat, stupid, lazy, arrogant, war mongers, and they don't even realize how bad things are going right now.

  • Sad but true.

  • Although your statement contains a lot of truth - your gross generalizations and hyperbole about all 300 million plus Americans is silly - your criticism is neither constructive or productive.

If are really an American, then the hopelessness tone of your post should lead you to renounce your citizenship. However, if you do have a glimmer of hope then maybe you could actually learn to get people involved rather than belittling them and telling how worthless they are. No one likes a quitter.

  • What is that odor flatuelencefox?

As for quitters, I belong to several organizations and know personally that the majority of American will not turn their attention from American Idol to even think about the state of affairs in this country, little lone actually do anything about it.

I for one will be organizing and protesting our governments foreign policy (Iraq and Afghanistan Wars). Please join us in the streets March 14 and March 21 for the nation wide protests against US imperialism!!!

  • That smell maybe all those noxious gases that are so full of.

So just because people may not necessarily support or be an active part of your causes renders them as idiots? You are right that too many Americans are not informed about the basics of civics and so called "common knowledge." But your contention that all Americans are is foolish hyperbole and makes you sound elitist.

Anyway, I too am against the wars. Will you be having any protest in the Los Angeles/Orange County areas?

  • thats CLEAN COAL alright!

  • The TVA is a GOVERNMENT owned independant corporation. You won't see this in the news. This happened on December 22, 2008. Deregulation of the TVA caused this to happen. The TVA wants to build nuclear reactor in the southeast. The government is not going Americans hear about this occurring, and probably stop further operations of the TVA.

    TVA=Tennessee Valley Authority

  • Just one of the reasons why deregulation isn't such a good idea as it seemed.

  • LOL, not only are Americans shit, their country is too

    :)

  • says a canadian

canada is not even a country

  • Right, but your American, so your not smart enough to know any better

  • well, you are an idiot, because you are not smart enough to know that Americans aren't stupid, just because one person is being dumb

  • No, its just that Americans ARE douchebags. One need only look at the Middle East to see the meddling hands of the animals called Americans

  • Go back to fucking your camel, you fucking dune-coon.

  • r u stupid, gtfo

  • I'm not but obviously you are

  • !!!!!! yea!

  • Uhhhh neat... first time I hear about this is from a news organization on the other side of the globe... god I love america.

  • dude, the news is out there for you to find if you want to. no reason to condemn your country. good grief.

  • Land of the FREEEEEEEEEE

  • Why couldn't they use that Fly Ash as a pozzolanic additive to cement?

What fly ash does to concrete is almost magic!

  • Been screaming for this for years! They keep parsing it by saying "more testing is needed to make sure that no toxins leach out" and yet this monster lake is permitted to exist!

The REAL reason they wont allow it is because it would last too long and wear too well. This cuts down on profits, doncha know. Someones brother in law wont get a contract to repave a road or bridge when it doesn't rot from rebar corrosion. Lousy bastards one and all.

  • You tried to point out the "miracle" application of fly ash to the State; to no avail?

If so, then they are either impotent politicians, (I have met many politicians & all of them are vacuous just like actors & actresses), or perhaps as you say: planned obsolescence!

I wish I could get a shipment of that fine fly ash to the Caribbean for building

Perhaps in time, I will get my hands on some

But seriously, why can't a concrete firm pick this stuff up?

  • No need to point it out, they are damn well aware of it. It's the miracle ingredient in the cement that the Romans used to make their roads that still exist to this day. They used volcanic ash, which is dead similar in almost all aspects. But they boondoggle things by claiming it may let nasties leach into the soil....HAH, yeah....right. It binds up the pores which HALTS all leaching...lying bastards.

Building codes forbid it's use till it gets state approval. Too cute, huh?

  • What I hear you saying is that your state actually forbids the use of fly ash in Cement?

If that is the case, I honestly would leave that State and never look back!

    Seriously!

(Trust me - I won't put up with nonsense by any government)

  • It's the same everywhere. The concrete industry is very "connected". Think about it. The same folks that seem to own lots of Garbage removal companies...ya know?

  • Comment removed

  • True, but still the public opinion and legitimate journalism implies they are isolated events which do not spell anything wrong about the system. The legit journalists think is normal and moderate but in this way they report to us that there is no privileged class which makes decisions based on personal profit that endanger other people's social welfare and the environment.

  • NO federal regulation of coal ash? That's a scandal.
