  • I don't speak a word of this language, but the very thought of what it means makes me want to cry. Beautiful!

  • On a Saturday, July 12th 1942, 5,000 Jews were taken from the Bialystok Ghetto. They were shot, but their families didn't know what had happened to them. The wives were called "shabesdike", meaning "of the Saturday". Rivke is one of them.

words by Pesakh Kaplan, who dies in the same ghetto one year later.

From: Songs of Generations, by the Mlotek family.

  • Beautiful song and performance.

  • Können Sie Text posten?

    Do You have the Songtext?

  • Oh, man. Wish I spoke Yiddish.

  • Lern Deutsch dann verstehst auch yiddish zum größtenteil

Learn German than you understand the most of yiddish

  • Learn Yiddish, then you'll understand most of german ;)

  • @McAlbin

childish reaction to a precedent comment

  • leaarn german,than you can 60% jiddisch

  • shalom, polska! Very nice music!

  • Wonderful Chava, her voice is unique and beautiful because it is strong and delicate at the same time, but my favourite song is "Friling".

    Wishes from Spain!

  • A very sad and beautiful song.

  • one of her most beautifull songs

    kisses

  • Positively riveting. The loneliness and desperation of the tragic story are quite evident through Chava's excellent delivery. The background music is most effective, with a note of fear and dread attached to it.

  • Thank you for posting!

  • thank u!...very capturing. i love chava alberstein so much

  • someone could provide a translation to this??

  • I dont konwn, what she exactly siniging. But i understand a little bit. She singing about a girl - Rivkele, who must work in factory in getto. Always, even in shabbat, and she waiting for shes husband. But shes husband is in concentration camp and will no return. Im not sure in 100%, but i think it is the minning of this song.

  • @barsztik

She speaks about her lover while working in a factory in the ghetto. It's not said he is her husband, but a man she loves :

    "Where is my lover

    Is he still alive ?

Is he a contration camp working hard ?"

And she cries "How dark is the shadow of the ghetto".

I don't speak yiddish, but german (but the two langages are similar), but i'm sure she says "my lover" or "my love" (habibi in arabic), what mades, in my opinion, the song even more sad, strong and dark as "husband".

  • barsztik - Your "Hebrew" sounds as Polish....

  • In hebrew, i mean in name. I write "Chava Aberstein"(in transcription ofc.). I just forgot :-) "lamed" :-)

Miałem na myślu w nazwisku alfabeten hebrajskim. Napisałem "Chava Aberstein"(w transkrypcji). Zapomniałem :-) o "lamed"

  • Ani twój polski, ani angielski nie są zbyt dobre :P "na myśli", nie "na myślu", "alfabet", nie "alfabeten", nie "shes", tylko "her" nie "she waiting", tylko "she's waiting", nie "and", tylko "but" powinno być, i nie "will no return", tylko "he won't come back", nie "minning" tylko "meaning" :PP Niemniej jednak, piękna, i smutna piosenka.

  • To dobrze, że są strażnicy języka. Chwała Wam za to. Teraz jeszcze napiszę autokrytykę i poddam się karze.

  • Niee. Poprostu sie naucz angielskiego

  • a dlaczego aurat angielskiego.... kiedys nas wszystkich ruskiego uczyli a teraz angielskiego :p

  • No to jak sie nie zna to sie nie uzywa :P Swoja droga, mnie akurat nie uczyli ani ruskiego ani angielskiego a francuskiego! :D

  • thank you ! any chava alberstein addition to youtube is warmly welcome, though i was disappointed to find out there's no clip. chava is greatest when performing live.

  • Oh, lo! Zrobilem blad w nazwisku! I make a little error in the hebrew... soon ill corect it.
