  • This movie is amaze <3

  • Best scene ever.

  • PAUL NEWMAN FOREVER

  • perfect scene, though. but the guys are in a shootout, and they still hold their umbrellas open in their hands?

  • Another classic Hanks.

  • dramaaaaaa

  • Thumbs up if you noticed the recurring theme in halo

  • I feel like this was the passing of the torch between Paul Newman and Tom Hanks

  • The Green Mile, Road To Perdition, Forest Gump. Why is it that my three favourite films all star Tom Hanks.........

  • @Webofscience you forgot saving private ryan lol

  • Anyone else recognize 'Reflekt - Need to feel loved' at 1.10 ?

  • This film should be released again in theaters for people to enjoy.

  • Green Mile, Finding Nemo, Shawshank Redemption, Road to Perdition, Adjustment bureau etc. Thomas Newman is the man.

  • Sends chills down my spine

  • cool scene

  • Conrad L. Hall master

  • brilliant had to get on bluray

  • The cinematography in this film is just too good for words. Rarely does photography in a film provide such a powerful sense of time and place as this film. I can imagine every cinematographer watching this film and being utterly intimidated.

  • @Guigley I agree. The film score really seems to bring it out

  • Magnificent movie.

The tag line should have been "If the Irish could have stayed sober and controlled their kids the Italians would be selling Bananas out of carts today".

  • To understand why Tom Hanks is possibly the greatest ever actor, you only need to see this film and Forest Gump, because between the two parts he portrays so much variation of emotion and character that you realise he can do anything with such totality.

  • @mankytoes i often wonder how the role of Amon Goeth from schindlers list would have turned out if tom hanks had accepted the offer to play the german commandant.thinking back ralph feins played it superb, but i rank tom hanks as a great actor,so who knows.

  • he should bring MG42 instead of thompson

  • @gnot0928 Not an easy gun to shoot by yourself standing.

A tommygun with a drum mag works fine...

  • tom hanks so fucking good

  • Paul Newman.

  • @NottheFacePlease That's Mr. Newman.

  • this movie was really good. this scene is the most artistically beautiful scene i've ever seen in a movie. simply outstanding

  • i love everything about this scene, the lighting, sound, score, the way it was filmed the actor's performances... I a perfect scene.

What a way to leave the film business, great job Mr. Newman.

  • butch kassidy gets owned by forrest gump

  • Lol, overkill. He must of emptied about 20 rounds into the old man.

  • This was simply Magic. There are no two ways about it. The film itself is not the best ever made - but this scene - the music - Paul's acting and Tom's face - classic! A magical moment captured forever!

  • @darrenmaccann1 To be fair it's easily my fave gangster movie cos it doesn't fall into the usual mob flick clichés.

  • Right. Rooney led Sullivan down a garden path to violence, murder, mayhem, and the utter destruction of everything he holds dear. Gee, what a great dad. I'm hoping Rooney understands perfectly well that Connor is next.

  • wats the name of the song

  • @birsic3216 Thomas Newman - Ghosts

  • yupp ths my favorite too, god damn! oh well i liked when he walked slowly, carry a big gun and not speak at all then bang bang bang.. 6 weeks on the road EXCELLENT !

  • He is already old Tom hanks..I think 1 bullet should do the trick..Instead he shot him like 24 times...

  • Why didn't you upload the whole scene?

  • This scene is a masterpiece

  • This movie is so full of great scenes. I think this is one of the greatest shows EVER made, right up there with The Godfather Series, and many other greats. They just don't get any closer to perfect than this show.

  • what's the name of this song?

  • @eaglehawk111 it's either "Ghosts" or "Just the Feller" both have the same haunting chorus

  • @RyanBleeker It's "Ghosts."

  • One of the best fucking scenes from any gangster movie! - music is awesome!

  • when tom hanks is in a movie the movie actually means something

  • Wow what an incredible shootout. He shoots a bunch of guys standing in the middle of the street with no cover and they just each fall down one by one. HOW LAME.

  • @JohnnyBoyCali could I possibly suggest something more to your liking? such as Universal Soldier or maybe Kindergarten Cop?

  • Acting, special effects, directing and editing at it's very best! Boy, what a scene!

  • Man, I never thought I would cry from a mafia flick.. his last words made me so sad :(

  • fucking over kill

  • I like how they all just stand there and wait to get smoked. Great scene though.

  • i think one bullet will do for the old guy but FUCK IT

  • This is acting at its best... no words just Newman's face

  • Thomas Newman= Amazing.

  • @HitchcockFan16 you mean Paul Newman?

  • @notmark1008 No, I meant Thomas Newman, the composer for this film. Don't get me wrong, Paul Newman is great too but Thomas Newman wins it for me. The track for this scene is incredible.

  • @HitchcockFan16 oh ok. I completely agree with you though, the music does flow perfectly with the scene.

  • "This is the life we chose, the life we lead. And there is only one guarantee: none of us will see heaven."

  • lol one guy is still holding his umbrella while shooting

  • Amazing. Not one of them thought to do anything except stand in the middle of the street while they were being shot at. A little bothersome, but still a good movie.

  • Paul Newman was awesome in this movie

  • One of the most underrated films ever with two of the greatest actors who have ever starred on a screen. This scene is absolutely perfect in terms of the music the symbolism, those 4 words John Rooney (Paul Newman) utters, everything about this scene and this film is excellent.

  • one shot would've killed him, jeez

  • @harryotterrules

Don't think so. Just take him down.

Real killers make serious that their victims are dead. Hehe! xD

  • @harryotterrules Yes it would. But there is so much hate in his body he can't stop.

  • I read it as he didn't want him to suffer or realize any pain, so he just laid into him and made sure he would be dead before he hit the ground.

  • The thin is tho, fair enough its not a guns blazing gun fight, but that would move the scene away from what its trying to represent the most, which is why we only hear the gun shots when he kills the dude whos name ive forgotten:P, so works for the film and is still good just not the gun scene some people might have hoped for, lets be honest it wud have the lukd silly

  • this is one of the most original and cool scene's i have ever seen in any movie

  • What happened to the sound?

  • its like this in the movie. more dramatic this way

  • The emotional music sample was used in Reflekt Ft Deline Bass - Need to feel loved.

    awesome track, check it out.

  • this is beyond quality

  • You best be joking.

  • best scene in the film

  • I know that Newman starred in Cars after this, but I want to believe that this was his epitaf, this was his swan song. This is a worthy ending to a worthy man. I truly believe that if he would have ever gotten a choice as to his end, this he would have liked. RIP, sir Newman.

  • @matts242424 iirc newman's voice acting had already been recorded for cars before he filmed this.

  • beautiful scene one of the best from gangster movies

  • A truly beautiful scene filled with sorrow.

  • he used a thompson.

  • Having fired a friend's M1A1, I can assure you that the tendency for the gun to climb off target is remarkable; a front pistol-grip like on Sullivan's is absolutely necessary for any type of fire control, and it is still very innaccurate over 50 yards. In fact, by examining this film clip at 0:05 and 0:09,the distance seems to be about 50-65 yards. An excellent marksman, who is "one with the gun", might be able to pull this off. GotMilkFilms is right about the sound, also: Excellent. Peace:-)

  • are you like a virgin or something?

  • somebody wants to try to dodge bullets at that range. This gun fires 700 rounds per minute.

  • The movie was good but i'd change the ending

and the tommy gun cant be accurate at that range

  • And it isn't !!!!

He just kept shooting continually until everybody except the godfather was dead!!!!

  • not only that but none of the bullets hit the car

  • what an idiot, how do you now that shit you fuckin little faggit?????

  • Actually, I believe it's: "I'm glad it's you".

  • @Blackadder89 i thought he said 'i like chocolate milk'??

  • @100PercentMale Maybe...depends on how you listen

  • @100PercentMale are.. you like.. retard?

  • @Blackadder89 yes you're correct.

  • The use of sound was amazing there using Thomas Newman's score dubbed over the sound of the Tommy gun was a brilliant choice amazed :)

  • I love this film... This was the first film that made me realise I wanted to go into the industry as a Screenwriter, Director, and Producer. I appreciate this post

  • Just finished this film, this is quite possibly my favorite scene in any film.

    It so amazing.

  • the tommy wouldnt have that much accuracy at that range.

  • yea they got a bit of kick

  • Paul Newman was still able to kick some ass when he was older. I miss that with De Niro and Pacino, those guys are over the hill.

  • VERY underrated film. Excellence all around

  • True

  • never mind, it's 'I'm glad it's you''

  • what does he say before mike sullivan kills him?

  • I love how the ganstas keep their brollies up when shooting.....

  • Well let's just put that one down to stubborn pride.

  • That and a truly disciplined fashion sense.

the brollies did actually match those coats.

  • The scene is actually slowed down to around .75x. You can tell by how graceful they all fall. In real time, he probably killed them all within 5 seconds. Not unrealistic at all.

  • Bitch, you be tripin

  • @DudeHuge

Serious... do you know how difficult it is to accessorize with umbrellas?

  • My favourite scene ever. Just beautiful!

  • I believe that the director (Sam Mendes) plays a cameo in this scene...he is the only guard actually somewhat shown...right next to Paul Newman and gets shot. He also has an umbrella.

  • Quite simply one of the most beautiful scenes ever filmed. Everything from the rain to Thomas Newman's wonderful score, right down to the minimalistic but oh-so effective acting by Hanks and Newman. It's almost like a moving painting. A masterpiece.

    RIP Paul Newman

  • Amen. Poignant juxtaposition indeed. Not an easy task to make a gangster shootout scene look beautiful.

  • This scene is very sad :(

    I love this film

    RIP Paul Newman

  • i wouldn't call this a shoot-out, more of a murder scene

Rock on Paul Newman, Rock on

  • I watched this film yesterday, classic

    RIP Paul Newman

  • Not so long ago I watched this and thought what a history Paul Newman would leave behind... R.I.P

  • RIP

  • my favourite movie......RIP Paul Newman....will miss u

  • So this is how Paul Newman died. RIP.

  • R.I.P Paul Newman

  • In Memory of Paul Newman. One of the greatest actors who ever lived. And a great humanitarian as well! May God rest his soul.

  • Amen!

  • Exelent... just exelent.

  • this is about the irish mob, but its not in boston, is it set in chicago, i forget

  • One of the two most powerfull scenes. I WILL cry at this and ending. Tom Hanks looks like he REALLY IS going to cry! (1:44) Then he iced him. |:-| Next on his list; Conner, Roony Still a stinker, he didn't beat him up or anything, didn't even make him suffer! Just three rounds to the head, and leaves. |:-| Overall for movie: 1/10 *is massacared by Mob and Riots* Okay....I'll admit it, 3/10 *trampled by stampide* 10/10 *nothing happens* Had to do that. Sorry. |:-|
  • Tom Hanks is a great actor, i love his work.

  • Uh no.

  • I have heard this theme song before, from another movie- but I can't remember which one, can somebody help me out?

  • who is the song by?

  • I think it's Thomas Newman

  • It's called "Ghosts"

  • OMG i love music at the climax just before Mike kills Rooney

  • amazing editing

    best scene in the movie.

    calm chaos.

Finish it off with some sad piano. and you have the best scene ever created.

    Thank you Sam Mendez

  • Great cinematography!, combines eerie music with silent action.

  • I respect the title of the music - Ghosts.

The music itself is very against type, and spot-on serious.

The folks who made this film know something about vengeance: what it can do, and what it can't.

  • excellence

  • what a movie, one of the finest ever made if not thee finest ! what great actors, legendary

  • Every aspect of Road to Perdition's craftsmanship was a masterwork - the art direction, sound mixing and especially the cinematography ranks among the finest ever.

  • 'I'm glad its you'. Best movie ever

  • the coolest scene in the whole movie.

  • best line of the movie is when newman says"there are only murderers in this room".

  • wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • definitely one of the best movies of all time. cinematographer conrad l hall is a genius

  • This is the best scene of the movie

  • Very Sad

  • I love this movie this scene is a classic

  • What's the name of the song in the background? Is it on the soundtrack?

  • Ghost

  • very underrated movie, it was in my eyes a classic, a masterpeace.

  • I'm Glad is You

  • AMAZING!!!

  • At 1:47, I slightly jump everytime Tom Hanks does that. The tommy gun is no joke, would hate to stir at the barrell of one of those bad boys.

  • I meant to say STARE.

  • Tommy Guns are still big today to, the typewritter is some scary shit.

  • Great movie, but I find it so depressing.

  • Great Movie, one of Tom Hanks best.

  • i like when connor said ''it's all so fuckin' hysterical'' jaja to the boy jajajajaj

  • haha, yes! and the boy says that then to his brother!

but, I love the film...especially this scene! really touching...

  • this movie is so underrated it makes me not sleep at night, this should be as famous as the godfather

  • sam Mendes, one of the best contemporary directors.

  • this movie completely caught me off gaurd when I saw it for the first time....this movie IS the shit!

  • The best movie ever made.

  • Tom Hanks is one hell of an actor

  • ya!

  • I've ranked this the best scene ever in cinema. Would anyone else care to agree?

Amazing cinematography with beautiful colors, and perfect use of sound along with that great musical score that haunts me to this day. And I would say that the line, "I'm glad it's you.", is one of the best lines ever.

  • im not sure if its the greatest, i aint seen enough movies to make that judgement but this scene definitly my top 5 of all time that ive seen. good choice

  • Well, I haven't seen enough films yet either I suppose. But from what I've seen I think it's the best.

  • i tried to post a comment before, don't know why doesn't show lol... anyway it's a great scene, i would rank it way up there, it's hard to say if it's the best. i mean, there are a lot of movies and great scenes. but this gets me everytime. one of the best scenes ever. not only the scene but also the movie are masterpieces. the camera work and the acting in this scene is amazing but the best thing for me it's the music. brilliant.

  • Yes, the music is a big part of it. But I think more importantly is the sound. It's complete silence except for the music until it cuts away to Newman's final line.

Road to Perdition is really a unique film. It's not a real abrasive film. Not overly violent or graphic; not real loud; not too edgy. The film speaks for itself.

  • THE best scene in the entire movie.

  • what's all this shit about being a gangster is not the way to go? gangster's always look out for their own. they were the immigrants in those days. they were the courts of justice for the people who couldn't go to the cops. i'm not saying what they did was right, but in the end, it was all about the family. pick up a history book guys. the most visually breath taking movie i have seen in my life. hanks's greatest performance.
