He doesn't rest his hand on the tablet. I can't get my pen to work. Do most of you have the ability to rest your hand on the tablet where you place the pen?
It doesn't paint for you... this is as complicated yet as simple as painting with a real brush/paint. Thought I prefer Photoshop over Painter they're both pretty similar and both require you to be a good artist in order to make good art.
@kakashi762 yeah it's like $2200, I got mine but it is the 1st gen of 21ux, the 2nd is like intuos4, so I was thinking of putting it to ebay. What is the diff between..? The pressure. Life of art with just normal straight black is uneasy unless you tried mousy mouse with mspaint which no pressure is needed but talent in blending.
@vcxwqaa c'est une tablette graphique wacom pas un ordi. C'est la Cintiq 21ux. Elle coute 2000€ pour 800 t'as la même en plus petit ( format A4 environ) c'est la Cintiq 12wx.
I have photoshiop Cs4. But, im also thinking of getting corel painter. But is it really worth the money. i mean, is it really any better than the photoshop series? I just dont want to put money into something that i already have.
@MadaSkills1 photoshop is better for picture work but if you are like me and many others corel painter x is better for drawing highly detailed digital drawings/paintings
@MadaSkills1 Photoshop is the best of all I'll say but also complicated. If you don't have enough money or rather waste your money for a cintiq, just get GIMP. Gimp is similar to photoshop though it is super slow. Another one is paint tool sai. Sai is a japanese program and there's an english version of it. Sai contains easy to use surface and for free. Google search the full version not the trial.
I just grabbed a new legit copy of coel X on ebay for $50. keep an eye on ebay ... I cant wait for my copy to get here, should be a nice addition to the tool box. After I saw what Andrew Jones does with this I HAD to have it
@bubblesofhell I am at a mixed state of feelings on painter X. I love some aspects, and get frustrated with others. I find myself jumping back and forth to photoshop a lot.
I have a pretty powerful machine, and real bristles still bogs it down. (I work at 300 dpi though, for reproduction quality)
I have trouble finding what I need.... like when I just really want a soft sort of brush, to be small, and no paper texture... I am using X for broad strokes, finding form, photoshop for detail.
@sprattoo If you need a supply of goods about photo editing, photoshop is professional and for art to make your life simple, I suggest SAI. What is SAI? I japanese program use for easy to draw anime or other stuffs. It is free and can be downloaded in their site. Just google: SAI Portable or Sai for free...
@Muriga252 I d/ld Sai, will give it a try. I still do like painter X, but like I said, it really takes some getting used to, If you are coming from photoshop, and pick up painter... its kind of a headache. Because you want sooo bad to just do something that would be sooo simple in CS4, but you have to clickety click around and interrupt the flow to get painter X to do what you want.
If you are a straight on traditional artist, with no CS4 experience, you will love Painter X
@sprattoo Well if you are like a beginner, Sai is easy since you don't need to study the interface. Well if you really get used to painter x then hang on to it because if you really are used to something like me before, I think Ms paint is the center of the world with my little mouse until pen tablets came in hand. But yeah, sai is just for starters and for people like things for free. I want to see some of your art too. I'll show mine if you show yours.
@supergirlangela I've been using Painter for many years now and from experience I can tell that for some strange reason every second version with an odd number is good and the in-betweens aren't. Painter 7 was a stable and good version with many new features, so was Painter 9. Painter 8 and X were filled with bugs and often crashed on my system but now with the new version 11 everything is fine again.
Because it's cleaner when doing it on a PC or a Mac. Obviously. I love using my Wacom Bamboo on Photoshop, Manga Studio, Paint Tool SAI and Corel Painter X. So easy to use.
That's a Wacom Cintiq tablet. They're the best of the Wacom tablets, but they're very pricy. At least a thousand dollars for one. You have to buy it separately.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
EEH..he used photoshop..adobe goin to sue corel.. anyway.. pretty cool shit. but i have one question.. WHY THE HELL DOES A TALENTED PAINTER WANT TO PAINT SHIT ON PC??? why not paint on ACTUAL PAPER..i bet thats SOO MUCH BETTER..
... sometimes i mean what if you have to get an image to the other side of the world in half an hour, youd probably scan, maybe edit it then send instead of send through mail
Talent is still needed to make great art. Think of it this way, you never need to go out and replace brushes, you never need to waste money on buying more paint since you never run out and plus if you need a mistake its no big deal because you can simply delete it without leaving evidence it was there in the first place. Its better to try out the program first rather than just jumping into conclusion that you need no skills to use it.
no. most people usually use something like a Intuos3 or Intuos4 out of preference or lack of funds. That particular tablet that he was using costs about $2,000.
So drop some red and some yellow on - no, wait. First get a guy who can paint. Then drop some red and some yellow on the canvas and blend between the two. In every one of the Painter 'mediums,' please. That's all I ask.
*** BTW, if I take the photo with my Nikon and then enhance it in Painter, or do multiple light weaves in iMaginator, I am certainly creating my own art.
I love technical progress and we still can use traditional hands-on media any time we want. Best of both worlds!

As for that cloning feature where he takes a photo and converts it and copies it with brush strokes, that is NOT art. Thats just copying Real art is starting from a hand drawn sketch. That takes no talent. At least he admitted.
I love corel painter X. I'm a traditional artist and this is awesome because i have so many resources at my finger tips that would cost over $4000 in real life.
yeah I still think corel painter is great for drawing from scratch because of its immense amount of variations and mediums. But I see alot of people doing the clone a photograph to make it look like a painting. I feel that as long as they don't claim they painted it then Its ok but I think its kind of a cheap way to paint. And it wouldnt' feel very satisfying to say the least.
Thats because its not a painting then, its just a lie lol Also i cant use it from scratch XD i draw out my image 1st, then i scan it, then outline, colour or add anything else thats needed.
i like to draw from scratch...which one is better for this? I see that most softwares are designed to enhance pictures or for touch-ups. I tried the free version of corel painter x. Its nice. I use microsoft picture it! but thats old, eventhough I have created nice drawings with it, i still feel i'm using something thats outdated.
It really all comes down to your own personal preference, but Photoshop and Painter are the two industry standards. Photoshop is mainly designed for touch-ups and manipulation, and although it can't replicate traditional media as well as Painter, it is, in my opinion the end- all art software to have... it paints just fine. I want Painter though. A lot of artists these days will draw by hand, render in Painter and finish in Photoshop. That's what I'm going for.
Photoshop's main purpose is to play the role of a picture editor (color adjustment, contrast, blur, superimposition, etc.), whereas Painter is a brush engine, which realistically replicates paint strokes and almost every traditional media, only within the computer. So, while you can paint just fine with Photoshop, many pros prefer Painter due to the fact that painting is it's main job. A lot of people use painter to create the initial image and finish it in Photoshop... a powerful combination.
Painter, while not as expensive as Photoshop, can easily run $300. If you want it, look for the academic version... it sells for about $100 with tax. It's the full program, but not sure why it's so much cheaper. Probably can't get it upgraded since it's academic, but hey, small price to pay for such a big saving. Good luck and have fun.
Very true, but if you're like me and don't like illegally downloading, it's not too bad to get a fully functional version of the program. The purpose, after all, of an academic version is for learning and not for professional work or profit. Painter XI is out now, too. Check that one out. I've heard mixed reviews.
Yeah, i'll have to give it a mixed review too. They added some nice stuff, but still haven't fixed some major problems. Corel is up for sale right now though, so it will be interesting to see what becomes of Painter 12, if anything at all :-(
I'm a Photoshop user. Wouldn't it be cool if Adobe acquired them and incorporated the real-bristle system into the next iteration of Photoshop? One program with Photoshop's manipulation capabilities and Painter's media engine would be a dream come true. Just a dream, but it'd sure be nice.
That would be awesome, but I somehow doubt Adobe would combine it with Photoshop. They'd probably make more money if they kept it a separate program. I also think they already made a statement saying they're not interested in acquiring Corel. Might be for the best. They're already a monopoly anyway :-(
What.s Up? when you say finish in photoshop, what do you mean exactly? what can Photoshop do that Corel Painter can't, when it's time to finish an image? It sounds as if a person needs both programs in order to go from scratch to completion. Is this the case? or can I buy Painter and be done with buying expensive programs?
By no means do you require both programs to make a quality picture... both work excellently. What I meant was painting the picture in Painter and importing it to Photoshop for any tweaks that you might want, since Photoshop is a picture manipulator, not a dedicated painting program, whereas Painter is a brush engine, therefore it lacks a lot of the effects and tools that make Photoshop so powerful. It all really comes down to preference and experience.
Both programs can create photo-realistic or painterly effects depending on what you know and how you use them. I'd say that if you want to just do digital painting and do it well, get Painter, but if you want a bit more flexibility with alterations and still have a solid painting ability, get Photoshop.
I didn't know that Painter had that feature for the pressure sensitivity... 'Coz mine does the same thing as his tablet for the brushes.
And I still work with traditional medias. I guess I have more control over the traditional instead of digital medias..Yet the traditional stuff can be expensive in the long run.
...tranfer my ideas into canvas, that way I save tons of money and save myself unnecesary waste of paint during the thinking process. In my case, I use digital as a TOOL, not as a means to an end. Remember, oneday the artist will find himself/herself in another planet and without any paint and brushes available only digital software like this. The artist will continue to create no matter what, even if he has to draw with his finger on the sands of Mars.
Once a reporter ask Picasso if the invention of photography will ruin the artist. Picasso answered that Photography did not ruin the artist, it liberated the artist. Now, he said, artists can do anything they want.
What I mean in all this is that digital art is just another medium to help artist grow. Digital art wasn't created to eliminate the traditional way of painting but to open visually new horizons. I still like traditional tools but I use digital art to sketch my work and later....
same here, have photoshop, tried it, got sooooo confused, it was like trying to draw blindfolded omg, i heard corel is much easier, and plus i need a wacom...but they're like a bajillion dollars, maybe a tablet pc?
I got this for my b-day, so i don't know how much its costs...but i have an i-pen, which is a electronic pen that has a cord that goes into the flash drive. the end of the pen is built like a mouse, has a lazer and everything! you might need to look into that because I think it's way cheaper than most of those kind of things.
Eh, Painter has better blending than photoshop, and Painter is usually a program for artists that worked with traditional medias for a long time. Because the tools there are similar to the traditional stuff.
But in end, I always use Photoshop to adjust the colors of my finished work. XP
I work with all mediums and this is just another one to add to the depth of the artist skills. When i went and bought my new cannon digital that did not mean I gave up my old cannon SLR. An artist still has to be an artist start with a good base and go from there.
terrible layering performance (the app slows down at 20x once a few layers are added) brush arthefacting on some major brushes, and many other performance issuse.
This been doing nothing but sucking Corels execs dicks and cunts and should do us all the favour of firing himself (and throwing himself off of from the top Corel's Corporations building at the same time.
It's like if adobe is paying him you for posting this rude comment on corel software ;) anyway... I'm happy with this, I work fine on this, the brushes are very real, is amazing how you can draw with the charcoal, just like if you were drawing on paper, and the real bristle is wonderful, I don't have the wacom tablet, I have a cheap genius pressure sensitive tablet and the painter X works great on it. Toastyovens you should check the configuration on your machine.
indeed, he's talking shit about painter in many, many videos about Corel Painter, it's rather RETARDED TOASTYOVENS! GO AWAY and let deside what tools they want to use for their art.
I've been using Painter since version 6. And yes all painter has is the great brush tracking and the brush engine and the shitty-aliased roatet feature. THAT'S IT. And those are the SAME features since painter 6 and hasn'r beeen improved ever since.
If you want unbiased opinions based on facts by REAL USERs (not this COREL PAID DOUCHEBAG, go to cgtalk corel forum and you can read ALL the problems addressed YEARS ago but were ignored COMPLETELY by the overpaid corel fucks who works in India.
Painter's interface for color adjustments and object transforming is CRAAAAAAPPPPP.
You can't preview it like PS, there's only a small postage stamp sized preview window (apparently the size of this douchebag's dick)
and the and the navigator is slooow sticks to the mouse click (no separate adjustable window like PS) apparentl;y this douchebag is talking out of his ass.
What's ironic is that Corel is demonstrating their product, but the tablet they're using (the Cintiq) is getting all the attention. Not very smart on Corel's part.
Are you kidding? You can trace things on a Cintiq, use physical stencils and guides, and the size of your tablet does A LOT for preventing hand strain. Also, rotating physically is far, far better than hitting "e" and rotating.
For whatever reason, I already guessed you were using a Mac from the tone of your first comments...
Regular Wacom tablets, such as the Intuos, allow you to trace. The tablet is covered with a sheet you can lift up and slide artwork under. I've never done this, but it's possible. Rotating the canvas is not something I ever do, either. My point was that, for most users, a non-Cintiq tablet will serve their needs perfectly. You get used to it quickly --there's no need to draw on a monitor. Your Mac comments/insults seem uncalled for, btw. No need to get rude, is there?
You don't really need or want the Cintiq. A good Wacom tablet will serve you much better than a $1200 Cintiq. It has the cool factor going for it, but professionals don't use it. Take it from someone who makes a living with a tablet. Save your money.
I'm on a Mac Pro dual quad, 23" Cinema display, using a 6x8" Wacom Intuos 2 tablet. No need for a huge tablet - you'll just be moving your arm around more if the tablet is big.
I use both platforms; I think both Mac and PC have their good traits but have a lot to learn. Obnoxious fanboys piss me off. You seem very talented, tho.
I meant you can't trace using physical guides like ellipse guides or a ruler. Did you mean you only use Painter for post-processing of a live photo?
so which is better, Photoshop or Painter??

luc9999999 2 years ago
Thats because its not a painting then, its just a lie lol Also i cant use it from scratch XD i draw out my image 1st, then i scan it, then outline, colour or add anything else thats needed.
onlynicc16 2 years ago
yeah i agree you're right, its not a painting. I think its fine to draw it out first and scan it. you're still drawin it by hand and that is cool.
luc9999999 2 years ago
Awsome, thumbs up for your comments ^_^ you by any chance dont have a deviant art account do you ?

Just downloaded free trail of painter11...lets see how that works;)
susflores 2 years ago
i like to draw from scratch...which one is better for this? I see that most softwares are designed to enhance pictures or for touch-ups. I tried the free version of corel painter x. Its nice. I use microsoft picture it! but thats old, eventhough I have created nice drawings with it, i still feel i'm using something thats outdated.
susflores 2 years ago
It really all comes down to your own personal preference, but Photoshop and Painter are the two industry standards. Photoshop is mainly designed for touch-ups and manipulation, and although it can't replicate traditional media as well as Painter, it is, in my opinion the end- all art software to have... it paints just fine. I want Painter though. A lot of artists these days will draw by hand, render in Painter and finish in Photoshop. That's what I'm going for.
Thorns85 2 years ago
i think painter x is not tht bad, but i think photo shop is better. with the tablet. its easy ;D
hakkk9 2 years ago
Painter 11 SUCKS!!! It is buggy and I seem to be losing strokes... anybody else getting slow performance?
Edel99 2 years ago
so.....what's the difference bewteen corel painter x and photoshop...?
darkrozenmaiden 2 years ago
Photoshop's main purpose is to play the role of a picture editor (color adjustment, contrast, blur, superimposition, etc.), whereas Painter is a brush engine, which realistically replicates paint strokes and almost every traditional media, only within the computer. So, while you can paint just fine with Photoshop, many pros prefer Painter due to the fact that painting is it's main job. A lot of people use painter to create the initial image and finish it in Photoshop... a powerful combination.
Thorns85 2 years ago
then i guess i need painter then......thx very much that helps a lot..!!!
darkrozenmaiden 2 years ago
Painter, while not as expensive as Photoshop, can easily run $300. If you want it, look for the academic version... it sells for about $100 with tax. It's the full program, but not sure why it's so much cheaper. Probably can't get it upgraded since it's academic, but hey, small price to pay for such a big saving. Good luck and have fun.
Thorns85 2 years ago
Can you get the upgraded version instead of the full ver....?
darkrozenmaiden 2 years ago
You can't upgrade it and you can't make money off of any art you do with it or they have the right to sue you.
Eloth 2 years ago
Very true, but if you're like me and don't like illegally downloading, it's not too bad to get a fully functional version of the program. The purpose, after all, of an academic version is for learning and not for professional work or profit. Painter XI is out now, too. Check that one out. I've heard mixed reviews.
Thorns85 2 years ago
Yeah, i'll have to give it a mixed review too. They added some nice stuff, but still haven't fixed some major problems. Corel is up for sale right now though, so it will be interesting to see what becomes of Painter 12, if anything at all :-(
Eloth 2 years ago
I'm a Photoshop user. Wouldn't it be cool if Adobe acquired them and incorporated the real-bristle system into the next iteration of Photoshop? One program with Photoshop's manipulation capabilities and Painter's media engine would be a dream come true. Just a dream, but it'd sure be nice.
Thorns85 2 years ago
That would be awesome, but I somehow doubt Adobe would combine it with Photoshop. They'd probably make more money if they kept it a separate program. I also think they already made a statement saying they're not interested in acquiring Corel. Might be for the best. They're already a monopoly anyway :-(
Eloth 2 years ago
What.s Up? when you say finish in photoshop, what do you mean exactly? what can Photoshop do that Corel Painter can't, when it's time to finish an image? It sounds as if a person needs both programs in order to go from scratch to completion. Is this the case? or can I buy Painter and be done with buying expensive programs?
romarebearden 2 years ago
By no means do you require both programs to make a quality picture... both work excellently. What I meant was painting the picture in Painter and importing it to Photoshop for any tweaks that you might want, since Photoshop is a picture manipulator, not a dedicated painting program, whereas Painter is a brush engine, therefore it lacks a lot of the effects and tools that make Photoshop so powerful. It all really comes down to preference and experience.
Thorns85 2 years ago
Both programs can create photo-realistic or painterly effects depending on what you know and how you use them. I'd say that if you want to just do digital painting and do it well, get Painter, but if you want a bit more flexibility with alterations and still have a solid painting ability, get Photoshop.
Thorns85 2 years ago
Thanks alot, I appreciate that.

Just try Painter with a simple Wacom Bamboo.
Or an economic tablet without all the exes of, say, an Intuos (the standard).
I enjoyed it much. One day, I'll buy an intuos with the art pen... but first of all, I need to know how to draw (lol).
extranged 2 years ago
It's kinda pointless if you only have a mouse to draw with right?

if only they made they made the Painter and wacom pads more afforable(start at $600 in my country) more artists would switch too it.

K3vVv666 3 years ago
I didn't know that Painter had that feature for the pressure sensitivity... 'Coz mine does the same thing as his tablet for the brushes.
And I still work with traditional medias. I guess I have more control over the traditional instead of digital medias..Yet the traditional stuff can be expensive in the long run.
Totally love them artworks there. <3

alcon8 3 years ago
...tranfer my ideas into canvas, that way I save tons of money and save myself unnecesary waste of paint during the thinking process. In my case, I use digital as a TOOL, not as a means to an end. Remember, oneday the artist will find himself/herself in another planet and without any paint and brushes available only digital software like this. The artist will continue to create no matter what, even if he has to draw with his finger on the sands of Mars.
edwin11373 3 years ago

Roflcoptinator 3 years ago
I'm wondering where is the place to order them from, computer stores might not carry such high-end stuff.
jackjiezhang 3 years ago
I got this for my b-day, so i don't know how much its costs...but i have an i-pen, which is a electronic pen that has a cord that goes into the flash drive. the end of the pen is built like a mouse, has a lazer and everything! you might need to look into that because I think it's way cheaper than most of those kind of things.

interface is just like photoshop
jigsaw99 3 years ago
Eh, Painter has better blending than photoshop, and Painter is usually a program for artists that worked with traditional medias for a long time. Because the tools there are similar to the traditional stuff.
But in end, I always use Photoshop to adjust the colors of my finished work. XP
taikyo 3 years ago
I work with all mediums and this is just another one to add to the depth of the artist skills. When i went and bought my new cannon digital that did not mean I gave up my old cannon SLR. An artist still has to be an artist start with a good base and go from there.

i have got that program and its really great by the way i agree with

people that post negative comments about digital art are
a) behind the times/out-dated
b) don't know how to use computers
c) threatened by its power
d) have FAR less job opportunities
e) are less well-rounded and equipped than a digital artist
f) probably will NEVER be hired by any company to do any sort of work
g) are normally 60 years of age and are old-school
h) are not an artist and have no clue of the new possibilities this software brings
get with the year 2008, losers

if you only value your art by "the smell of the paint, and the mess it makes" that is.

Tell that to Todd Lockwood and other originally traditional painters who have been making a nice living of their digital art for years.

Toastyovens you should check the configuration on your machine.
dodossier 3 years ago
indeed, he's talking shit about painter in many, many videos about Corel Painter, it's rather RETARDED TOASTYOVENS! GO AWAY and let deside what tools they want to use for their art.
InSaneTK 3 years ago
I've been using Painter since version 6. And yes all painter has is the great brush tracking and the brush engine and the shitty-aliased roatet feature. THAT'S IT. And those are the SAME features since painter 6 and hasn'r beeen improved ever since.
If you want unbiased opinions based on facts by REAL USERs (not this COREL PAID DOUCHEBAG, go to cgtalk corel forum and you can read ALL the problems addressed YEARS ago but were ignored COMPLETELY by the overpaid corel fucks who works in India.
toastyovens 3 years ago
INterface is Photoshop like? Uh, pleeease...

NolinArt 3 years ago 3
Are you kidding? You can trace things on a Cintiq, use physical stencils and guides, and the size of your tablet does A LOT for preventing hand strain. Also, rotating physically is far, far better than hitting "e" and rotating.
For whatever reason, I already guessed you were using a Mac from the tone of your first comments...
Oh well.
luckyhat4 3 years ago
Regular Wacom tablets, such as the Intuos, allow you to trace. The tablet is covered with a sheet you can lift up and slide artwork under. I've never done this, but it's possible. Rotating the canvas is not something I ever do, either. My point was that, for most users, a non-Cintiq tablet will serve their needs perfectly. You get used to it quickly --there's no need to draw on a monitor. Your Mac comments/insults seem uncalled for, btw. No need to get rude, is there?
NolinArt 3 years ago
From what I know.. Wacom sponsors Corel. :P
InSaneTK 3 years ago
You don't really need or want the Cintiq. A good Wacom tablet will serve you much better than a $1200 Cintiq. It has the cool factor going for it, but professionals don't use it. Take it from someone who makes a living with a tablet. Save your money.
NolinArt 3 years ago
What setup are you using?
STRAYGA 3 years ago
I'm on a Mac Pro dual quad, 23" Cinema display, using a 6x8" Wacom Intuos 2 tablet. No need for a huge tablet - you'll just be moving your arm around more if the tablet is big.
NolinArt 3 years ago
Thnx for the advice. Im no expert on tablets so its nice that pros like you take the time to advise others :-)
adzieboy14 3 years ago
I use both platforms; I think both Mac and PC have their good traits but have a lot to learn. Obnoxious fanboys piss me off. You seem very talented, tho.
I meant you can't trace using physical guides like ellipse guides or a ruler. Did you mean you only use Painter for post-processing of a live photo?
