There was a time 2 fantastic drummers were on stage with James brown : legends Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks! They play both on this version, I don't remember where I saw the video and can not find it on Youtube. Thanks for the post !
Sounbboy6........i'm witcha bro!! u may have already figured this out, but just in case, I went and found it at amazon.com for the cd, & then I downloaded it from itunes, didn't wanna wait for the cd to get to me = ) lolol !!! This concert is just too good.......
@PaulDA2000 I was "IN THE BUSINESS" for over 25yrs. and this was done FAST cause it was LIVE and they wanted to get it over with. The original recording is what made it a hit ALL OVER THE RADIO. Plus this is a perfect dance record but when they do it live for a show,,that's different. I booked and worked with many artists and groups 50's 60's 70's to early 80's. Booked Mr. Brown several times. LOVE THE ORIGINAL
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 I don't give a rat's ass if you were in the business for 25 years and if you booked Mr. Brown or not. That doesn't mean you are any kind of authority. I've been probably his biggest fan since 1971, had dinner with him, met him numerous times, saw him 150 plus times in concert, i'm the book 'Nowhere To Run: The History of Soul Music' by Gerri Hershey in the JB section, so don't throw your credentials at me! For your information, Mr. expert.
Also, the original was LIVE ALSO Mr. wiseass! It was from the 1968 Live At The Apollo vol II album, and they didn't play this version live " to get it over with" they played it that way because Mr. Brown wanted it that way. In the end though, it is a matter of opinion which version someone likes best, so don't try to make it seem like you opinion is an actual fact!.
@PaulDA2000 I know it was from the Apollo LP. They were just trying to get thru as many of his hits as he could to satisfy the crowd. WOW your opinion leaves no room for others opinions. I was involved with Him,,Hank Ballard,,,The Five Keys,,,Otis Williams & The Charms and others on KING IN THE 60'S. JB proved he was right with that LIVE APOLLO LP to Syd Nathan and that's when he took him off FEDERAL and put everything after that on KING. I have all the LP's and 45's. also
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 - Oh n o, you can have all the opinions you want, as can I. But to me, the reason Mr. Brown played most of his songs faster because that's just the way he wanted them, not to go thru as many as possible to satisfy the crowd. If that was true he wouldn't play some songs for 10 minutes or more, he would play them all for 3 minutes each and have 60 songs in his set!.
@PaulDA2000 There'll never be another like him. I booked him at THE ARENA in Steubenville,Ohio in the mid 60's. Ray Charles had done a "no show" there just the year before. It was the night after he had been busted for drugs in Indianapolis. The crowd were staying outside,,there was doubt JB was really coming. When he did show up some came in. When he noticed I wasn't making it,,he told his road mgr. to knock $2000 off balance owed. I will never forget that. We about broke even. I miss him.
@PaulDA2000 I thought Ray was busted in Indianapolis the night before that show but I just talked to a friend and now we're not sure where it was. I do know that the crowd at that JB show was leary that JB wasn't gonna be there because of Ray's no show just the year before. The white crowd was coming on in but the blacks were the leary ones,,but it worked out OK in the end. I had other shows with him but finally he got SO BIG and really expensive.

Hi - am trying to read all this stuff - but what album is this version from please. In any event this was how JB wanted it -it had to be cos it really made it come alive in a concert setting - pushed the amps up and you had a party
@PaulDA2000 I don't think the MR.BROWN I knew all those years would talk to people like you do. If he was anything he had manners and was a GENTLEMAN+
I close my eyes and I'm there again,WOWWWWWW. And his shows lasted almost 2 hours. He use to have 2 drummers in the middle of the stage and they kicked from the first beat to the last, now that was what you call ENTERTAINMENT.
Thi is my favourite version of There Was A Time. It comes in straight after my fave version of Cold Sweat on the live in Dallas '68 album which is too heavy for words...you've got to listen to this cranked up throuhg proper speakers of on headphones, not through little laptop speakers!!
