  • WOW this was awsome

  • I am non American, and I where I live in the Middle East you see all kinds of Africans. But African Americans look different to me. Smokey looks like he has a lot of Native American in him, so yes, he's mostly American.

  • @meaownefertiti said, "Smokey looks like he has a lot of Native American in him, so yes, he's mostly American."

    Mostly American?!

Boy, did you miss the point of what he was saying. But thank you.

  • wonder full ...very nice... i can add one more thing about BLACK PEOPLE.. very unique ,, in ISLAM every Muslim is praying 5 times a day.. before prayer we do azan ( means calling for prayer). the very first azan in ISLAM was done by HAZRAT BILAL (pbuh) and he was black. I don't know but inside my heart i always love BLACK PEOPLE. GOD BLESS all of you.

    TAHIR , PAKISTAN

  • nigger please

  • This was a good look from the past into the future!

  • Wow!!

  • we are ARE americans saying "black american" is just being specific..all those conscious muthafuckas got shit twisted all on africa's dick and shit . i respect africa because yes that is where my ancestors are frm. but they need to remember it was our so called african brothers that sold us (americans, jamiacans, brazilians, hatians)into slavery. and the efforts a white american that eventually ended slavery in america (abraham lincoln)..

  • @jakcre "If I could preserve the Union by freeing all the slaves, I would do it. If I could preserve the Union by freeing no slaves, I would keep them all in bondage. If I could preserve the Union by freeing some and leaving others enslaved, I would do that."

he just did that to keep the union with us because of their great farming lands

  • I love who i am. a beautiful black woman living in america.

  • Bravo Smokey,,,,you burned that one ALL the way down!!!! Alright!!!!!! :)))

  • WHAT! This mans words ring true

  • I Love This video I could not have said it better. This our story!!!

  • I think it also has something to do with the exploration into diasporic imaginaries which is the idea of a longing for a home that no longer exists. When Smokey referenced that if I (a black man) were to go back to Africa and try to enculturate myself there, I would just only be taking up... See More space and not be considered at home. It's the same stigma that created the need to create Kwansa. Here's my question, is that post-modernist thinking or a hunger for enculturation. Brainwashed.

  • @DJJPGUNNz ...interesting concept

  • Comment removed

  • One of the best poems I've ever heard. I been saying this I am american and nothing else.

  • I'm an American American.

  • why are some people hatin'? Why can't we all just get along?

  • I LOVE BEING BLACK 2!

  • im black and im proud!

  • u go back to africa to find ur ancestors nd u realize ur not african u just a black american taking up space in africa

  • ugh i whole heartedly agree!!! i have always said this and couldn't get it across to people but he just did!! thank goodness! I am black not african-american!

  • Amen Smokey, I too an a Black American, If it was good enough for one of my idols one of the first black 4 star generals Benjamin O.Davis who once a white reporter ask how it felt to be one of the first African-American generals. Gen Davis replied I detest that phase I am a black American and in the future please address me as such, I was born in America.

  • WOW smokey killed that shit

so articulate and wel written and THE TRUTH!

  • americans love this shit

  • Wow! Smokey laid it down!

  • don t miss fantasia vh1 reality show "fantasia for real" that airs on vh1 jan11

  • @rashard418

u are fukin everywhere. advertisin ur vh1 shit

  • i know because fantasia is the bomb and i wouldnt want you to miss this for the world because she can help people struggling in their lives

  • I am glad that somebody else of importance has the right mind to speak out against this calculated, identity killer. To rename people over and over again is wrong. It keeps the people weak. We should be able to name ourselves and not have someone stereotype us into a phony culture. This is made up s*%# to support the privileged classes and keep darker people down and dysfunctional. Willie Lynch in deed (Divide and conquer). I am America, American! I am suing in court to stop it. Who's with me?

  • Dezzina19 where do you get that shit pronunciation from. It is pronounced nay-grow with a slight roll on the r. It means black in Spanish and Portuguese. Derived from the latin word niger meaning black. Nigger is derived from the southerners pronunciation of negro. They often pronounced o's either as a or er such as pillow = pilla or piller, willow = willa or willer.

  • this makes you rethink... our ideology of race and the orgins of african americans... i mean american americans just of different colors =)

  • I have nothing but the greatest respect for Mr. Smokie Robinson and if I ever had the chance to meet him what an honor it would be.

  • Alright Smokey!!!!!!!

I'm not an African American or even a Black American, I'm an American American. ;]

  • That was amazing! so good

  • Well said Smokie!

  • PREACH smokey PREACH

  • That was great!

  • so glad he said it... its about time somebody did. Be happy to be who you are... people make things harder than they have to be...

  • Willie Lynch, " white master impregnates a Dark slave and makes a light skin baby. light skin slave is given more privileges and quarters in slave master house. House nigga, field nigga. When the field niggas rebel and wants to burn master's house. House nigga objects, you can't burn masters house that's my house too. Sound familiar. Willie lynch theory is still at work.

  • I understand both point of views. Black American, African American. But it is a fact most black Americans don't want to hear sh@! about africa and do not claim africa. But a white men can do a DNA test and claim proudly, He's descended from Africans. Yes we must look to the future. But as a wiseman said, "He who forgets his past is sure to repeat the same mistakes in the future. Remember together we stand divided we fall. African Jamaican, African American, African African. All the same

  • ok.. SERIOUSLY PPL!? LOL THIS IS A BLACK POEM. HES NOT SAYING THAT THERES ONLY PROBLEMS WITH AFRICAN AMERICANS. HES SAYING THAT HIS PPL BEEN THROUGH THINGS AS WELL AS OTHER PPL OR CULTURES. IF YALL WOULD STOP BEING SO STUPID AND LISTEN.. U WOULD UNDERSTAND.. HES JUST SAYING THAT HE LOVES HIS RACE AND BEING AN AMERICAN. !!!

  • Nobody's saying slavery wasn't wrong. They are saying that dwelling in the past prevents progress, equality, and understanding. How can you listen to this and not be on his side, or at the very least appreciate what he's saying.

  • I don't like to be called an african american, i know nothing about africa! I would rather be called or label as a black american.

  • He need to sit his dumb ass down somewhere and do some homework

  • All of you are #@$%ing idiots. It was simply poetry. JEEZ!!!!

  • it's more than one percent. It's atleast 10%. probably 20%. Mainly in the midwest and north.

  • I double checked, the number is one in twenty American Blacks (which is 5%) has any significant amount of Native American heritage. There's a section in PBS's African American lives Part 2 where they discuss Native American Heritage and after genetic testing they tell a few people they have 0% one person they have 1% and another 3% heritage. Either way, it really isn't common at all.

  • What was the question?

  • Great poetry Mr.smokey robinson!!! GREAT!!!

  • You sound ignorant. Spare yourself next time you want to rant.

  • Brilliant.

  • This is phenominal!

  • Awesome! If you have an ear to hear, love your blackness. Love your mother, brothers, sisters and neighbor.

  • Well said, a different perspective

  • Point taken

  • love this guy

  • Dude that's the truth Amen Smokey

  • That was awesome! Amen, Smokey, amen!!

  • i swear i almost cried

  • i love smokey robinson YALL

n yupp i almost cried too :S lol

  • Are you kinding me?! Why are the last couple of people dissecting what he said in stead of listening. What he said was real and strait from his heart. That was off the hook. Kodos to Smokey

  • respect. but I'm ethiopian american, and these days when i go home, we dont despise black americans, we emulate, and respect them, cause this is the only country where the minority can become the president, so dont think we hate black americans, we love yall

  • Smokey is going off be cause we not africans, their hethennistic dodo eating baboons. Read the book Nature Knows No Color Line or From Babylon to Timbuktu - The so called Negro in America are Israelites.

  • inspirational!

  • Also, those know the Slave Trade history should know that Europeans didn't just go to Africa and kidnapping people. It was African tribes who sold conquered tribes people to the Europeans. In conclusion, if you want to blame Europeans and Americans for your ancestors hardships than you also need to blame your own African ancestors for selling your ancestors to the slave owners. And if you really care about Africa than I ask you where were you during Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa etc.

  • number 1, I was a child during those events you mentioned. But am currently working hard to end the genocide in Darfur. 2, All Africans are not the same! The differences between tribes are the same as the differences b/w French & Spanish & English...all white, but no one would argue they are the same people! Finally, the slave system existed all over the world, but Europeans developed the system of race-based slavery that required the dehumanizing of African slaves for its continued existence.

  • That's good and happy that you are working hard to end the genocide in Darfur. I would like to help also maybe if you give me some info on it I'll be happy to join your cause as well. But the point I was making is leave Smokey Robinson to his own opinion and quit bashing how messed up America is when we aren't the only Country to be blame for everything. IMHO I am tired of hearing the blame towards one country without the accountability of self responsibility. No disrespect to you or anyone.

  • Comment removed

  • Hey i'm not showing disrespect to anyone. i'm just saying every country has done wrong to other countries or to their own people. you can't just put blame on one entity. i'm not sayin to dont blame europeans as they actually made blacks into slaves but you can't absolve the responsibility of the tribes who sold them as well. i'm not trying to minimize anything. everyone holds a responsibility.

  • My apologies. But many can easily be offended by your earlier words. But you actually DO raise a good point about intra-slave trade. My understanding is that there were significant differences between the two. But, all of it was wrong, regardless of who committed it. Have a good one.

  • Smokey, while well versed, is wrong as to be insulting. But, I'm mature enough to know that there's such thing a debate/lack of consensus. Therefore, I'll merely say, I disagree w/ him.

  • I don't understand why are a lot of you people dissing smokey for saying what was on his mind. Honestly he states that its okay if you want to be called African American if you wan that reference and clearly states to let alone respect his own opinion as well. And for all those saying America has an evil history than i implore you to name a country that doesn't reek of violence and inequalities. All countries one time of another suppressed a minority. Read history before you criticize!

  • "All countries one time of another suppressed a minority." No, seriously. L OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO L.

  • EXCELLENT!!!

  • buncha brainwashed fux

i respect smokey for this cause its clever and takes intelligence to create but america is da epitome of ignorance and it was created thru evil

so again FUCK AMERICA but not americans (atleast not all of em)

  • america is america beuz of americans u dumbfuck. wut country u from? u must be jealous cuz the whole world knos this the best deal out there...and if u live in the states, just shut the fuck up and leave. aint nobody forcing ur bitchass to stay here. we dont need fuckers like u in our country.

  • this is my anthem

i've been tryingto put these thoughts into words for so long...

  • fuck america

  • you tell em

  • Say it loud "I'm BLACK and I'M Proud"

  • One of the illest song writers of all time. And I absolutely loved this performance! I'm blk and I'M PROUD!!!!

  • it is our culture not our race that divides us. I didnt expect this from someone who lived through segregation and still claims he would rather live in america than anywhere else. And he is respected by many and his use of the "n" word is very sad and ignorant. Black americans have lived here longer than any minority group but that dosent mean it is your home. The sacrifices and hardships black ancestors went through were because there was no other choice.

  • It's culture AND race that divide. In fact, Black Americans are so divided that there is no consensus on any issue. So after one division (race), others followed.

I also lament his validation of that "n-word"(though I dislike calling it "n-word" more). However, I see its use in this art as necessary in some form, since this is all about names.

All was stripped away, and now this IS home. To feel otherwise, yet stay here, is hypocritical. Don't like it? LEAVE.

  • The only reason people come to america is because of the opportunities otherwise why would people leave their homeland to come to a country with a horrible history. If leaving was so easy i would but nothing is easy. I didnt come here my parents did and i cant go back because of the state of my homeland. So i guess i will sit here and whine.

  • Barack Obama

  • this is what im talking ab0ut.

    l0ved it. l0ve him.

    can i just add that sm0key r0bins0n is 0ne fine 0lder mann..

  • my nigga!!! AAHHH SHIOT!!

  • Smokey KILLED it

  • Legally black is a status. Study law

  • I'm quite sure this was now about any legal statute. Besides, law is not immutable anyway.

  • fuck u im black not african and american

  • i affectionately say to you...

  • "away negro is how you say black in spanish"

  • its anyway brtha not away =D

  • AND?

  • . . . speechless.

  • yo he'z goin in too badly....i love dis

  • Lol.. Random.. But if Smokey Robinson is your uncle and you helped him write this, I agree. You did a GREAT job helping him! Lol..

  • I did the research on african history and I help him stay hip with his rhymes and stuff, lol.

  • you didn't help him with the ryhmes, that was all uncle smokey

  • Smokey robinson is our uncle, Alexis is my sister.

  • I did too lexi, don't take all the credit.

  • this is the best poem that is out there....

  • Wow, this world is wicked to the Nth degree.... I wish we would stop pointing out what makes us different and start looking at what makes the same...no hate, no discrimination ,no borders just people being people.

  • Thanks for posting this! Fantastic! I didn't know that Smokey Robinson was so outspoken. He was almost like a 60s Black Johnny Rotten!

  • Love people love each other love life, this color and religion were just dividing ourselves.

  • It is as if Smokey looked into my core of snapshots and presented the real pictire. I have never been so proud of Smokey as this video. Perhaps, if enough Americans of African Descent take heed to this message, they would indeed eradicate the word "Nigger" from their vocabulary...PERIOD! Atleast in Africa, there are no Niggers....

  • There are all different types of derogatory terms for Black People. Eliminating Nigger will only open up a new spot for an even worse term for us.

  • Perhaps, there will always be one group of people vying for the imaginary position of "superiority", whereby putting down one group elevate their status. However, the term "Nigger"...rooted in this country, is associated with too much pain, degradation, humilitation and death. So, let "them" attach another meaning to us as a people. None will NEVER carry the weight of the term "Nigger"...EVER! Because we won't "EVER

    allow it...EVER!!!

  • Huh?? Eradicating the word isn't going to change anything a better solution is to find out what the word truly means no not what racist Europeans turned into a derogatory term and it didn't derive from the latin word niger in a number of African languages n*gger means chosen person/ people believe or not I couldn't care less

  • Oh man, I love this poem! Haven't heard it in such a long time! Way to go Smokey! Aint nothing wrong with being Black - Black and Proud!

  • african asian, lol,

  • i love how he made a reference about spanish people, i always tell people that saying black in spanish is pronounced "NEGRO" honestly its where the word originated from which a lot of people don't know about

  • its spelled that way but its pronumnced Nigro, as if it has an i insdtead of an e, but yes it does mean black

  • It means more than black. "Nigger" comes from the Latin "Negro" or "Black." But the LATIN comes from the GREEK...

When the Greeks wanted to describe the amazing teachers they met when they went south, they could only reference the fact that the only time they had seeing people so dark, was after they had DIED, because dead skin of every color darkens to BLACK.

Latin's "NEGRO" comes from Greek's "NECRO" or DEAD. I am not dead, and therefore I find any derivative of "necro" to be insulting.

  • thats pretty cool i didn't know that

  • As a Zimbabwean i totally agree wit Smokey. I'm damn proud to be black n to belong to such a beautiful race but its always bugged me that black americans r called african americans wen so many of them know so little about Africa. I got love for all me black pple, but yes u originated from Africa, but ya'll aint African Americans.

  • wow if you originated from there then of course your a African American what you mean ma? like smokey said if civilization started there every body should be a African asian, African caucasian etc.

  • Right On Smokey !! I loved this and will send it to every BLACK AMERICAN like me that I know, Thanks for the post

  • We are all the same. We all have similar hopes and dreams, disappointments and nightmares. We all bleed red blood, we are all the same. Thanks Smokey.:):)

  • Thank you Mr. Robinson for telling it like it is. You are a God-given genius!

  • What else can be said!! A wise man!

  • It is not TRUE that the Africans do not welcome us .. that's what they want us to think.. go there and see

  • At Least someone caught the BRAINWASH that he was trying to spew. Your pride is not to be american because WE are not Americans. The ream Americans were killed.

What we SHOULD be doing is going back to Africa, and reintegrating ourselves with our REAL roots, finding out the Truth about our ancestry. I'm tired of black folk neglecting africa, and upholding the very place we were enslaved and brought to by force. Marcus Garvey had it right. If you don't see yourself as african YOU get left behind.

  • If you feel you SHOULD be going back to Africa, then get going buddy. The white man did his best to destroy any trace of africans' roots upon their arrival. He didn't take records and he even split of everyone who could speak the same language. Your roots are indeed in America. Good luck finding them...

  • What roots? It is a disgrace for us black folk to be saying that we have roots here, and we should pay attention only to these, and forget about our african ancestry. I have no qualms about saying that America holds Black history, but I can not, and will not say that this is where our ROOTS are. This is the problem with black folk today, we are trying to divide ourselves by claiming Africans, Jamaicans, Haitians, and other people of color to be something other than black.

  • WoooW.. I am honetly speechless, that someone would say something so crtical and with no understanding.....

  • Like Malcolm X said "We're the victims of America" Yet going back to Africa isn't a easy task just so you know their learnin the languages and theres alot of different African languages etc. but people especially black people is some sad shit

  • That is so true Mr.Robinson needs to read on how many african americans that hae move to south africa and living in west africa and he needs to read more

  • I LOVE THIS!
