Most everyone sounds mean when s/he speaks English. It's just the difference between Japanese and English (or should I say American.) languages and cultures as Carolyn says.

In the US, you're expected to speak convincingly, while in Japan, you're expected to talk softly, because talking aggressively to someone could be taken as a rude manner over there.
