Michael Atherton & Robin "Judge" Smith are, very underrated batsmen of 90s....while "Athers" was a classical English batsman who could grind down a fierce attack (& also unleash some textbook strokes), "Judge" was one of best players of quick bowling but poor against spin...
athers didnt go too badly actually against those guys i do recall a few good knocks in pakistan and in the carribean but he just didnt have the mettle to match it with the aussies
Agreed! Although he notched up the occasional 100 against the Aussies, he seemed uncomfortable playing their bowlers, especially McGrath. However, against most other teams, Athers was a good, solid opening batsman
lol, yeah - and Pollock and Walsh and Ambrose and Younis and Akram (and so on). Not one of my heroes, frankly.
Btw, Damian Fleming got a ton when he played half a season for 'my' club in England in 1990. It was one hell of a knock from the scariest fast bowler I'd ever seen! He was a bit quicker then too, than when he played tests after injury and a remodeled action. A really nice, genuine person, too :)
lol no change in the Atherton v McGrath battle then.

Mullaly really did bowl brillantly there although that was probably the best he ever became for England after that it was quite downhill
