I grew up watching this film so many times. Love the characters and of course Pat Matheny's music score... each time I watch this film I get moved....
Ever notice how the really great things happen to grace your life without any fanfare and hoopla yet when they arrive the greatness comes in, makes itself at home in your heart and say's 'Here's a gift.' I always thought of this movie as a gift. It never needed big advertising or money to sell a universal understanding of love, laughter, friendship and growth. Thank you for that gift...
This film is SO magical. I've watched it many times, own the DVD, and it's in my top five of favorite movies. Too bad the critics (at the time) didn't give it the reception it deserved.
I've always been a big fan since I was fortunate to discover the film years ago. A hidden gem. And the music by Pat Metheny really accentuates the emotion and action.

It has always been one of my favorites.
I loaned it to some of my coworkers (younger, twenty somethings - or thirty) we were talking about our generations and films that portrayed our age groups and life....They wanted me to watch Old School with Will Ferrell...I loaned them this one. They thought it was so boring, didn't even finish it.
Told me a lot about what movies and story telling have become in this day and age..

I love this whole entire scene - I was only a little girl when I saw this movie but I always remember this part, so beautiful and romantic. Thanks for putting this up.
There's something sublimely sad and lyrical about the characters in this film -- we can associate with them but when we get close they seem farther away, and the scenes we want to inhabit with them seem forever out of our grasp. There's no question this film has discovered something-- a brief magical moment in time on the edge of two different generations.
Can you believe this movie made less than $100,000 U.S. when released in 1985!!! WTF! Moreover, Speilberg who underwrote it hated the final product and removed his name from it. WTF!!! This is a great movie IMO with a great feel and completely underrated. At least Tarrantino said he saw it every night for the "one week" it was held at theatres (for real--only a single week run). Check it out esp. for coming of age nostalgia. Great, great film.
@sevilami ...speilberg was a moron. I just watch ET for the first time. I can't believe his grade school humor and how he over emphasized a point in the movie. I am surprised he made it to the big time but the American movie public as well as the voting public are sheep and have the herd mentality.

This is one of my all time favorite movies, and it is Kevin Costner's favorite of the movies he has done. I came looking for this after telling a friend about it the other day. Thank you so much for posting, it never fails to choke me up. Funny thing is I remember it being a lot longer.
Great film, really under-rated, and this is possibly the best scene, or if not, second only to all the laundry landing behind Judd Nelson as they take his picture.
One of my favorite movies EVER! I can't believe what a hidden treasure it is that barely anyone in my world is familiar with. The story line, the music, the scenery... it's all so wonderful. Something I could watch a million times and never tire of it!
I love this movie... my dad loved it even more tho. This reached him on another level. But i gotta admit it meant a lot to me also. Im in college and the transitions from semester to semester are encaptulated perfectly in this movie. U lose friends as well as gain them. My dad and i actually visited the gazebo in the movie as well as other places in the movie like the air port, the so called school lol and the place of the horned dog women lol. GREAT FREAKING MOVIE. One of my favs of all time.
And playing with fire. And she says so. And he knows she's right. As she walks he sees his old life ending as she removes the keystone that bound their guy group together. But he takes a near taste of something he can never have. Because deep down. He doesn't want it. Not really.
@bigthumb1906 Thanks. Who are you really. Just curious. Make something up. The most important thing is to project sincerity. If you can fake that you've got it made. ; )
Gardner won't blow up his former best friend now lost to marriage. Almost but not quite. He wants her to go. Deep down he knows if she doesn't he will be destroyed. He can't stop playing. The harder the sale the more he sells it. But then the edge hits and he shrinks back. She knows he's playing.
Unless you've seen the whole movie AND been paying attention the scene will go straight over your head. It's only then that we realize that best friends Gardner and Kenneth have been in love with the same woman and that Gardner (who until this moment, we've been led to believe is a total, immature, frivolous self-indulgent horse's patoot) has been unselfishly busting his butt to move heaven and earth to see them married off.
@pinz2022 ... from the moment Costner open his mouth about the subject, anyone would know this simple fact. It was impossible to go over anyone's head unless you were retarded.
If you were in your early 20's when this movie came out-boy did it strike a cord-I've seen 50 times or more and it still does somthing for me each time. It did not in any way get the attention or praise it deserved.
God, the look on Gardner's face when the dance is done and she walks away from his life is just heart wrenching. They were truly in love and he realized he made regretful decisions; what incredible turmoil that must be.

@darkoanton5 -- Right. My answer was to the question below from Bendrix777. It's another Metheny song (The 3rd in the film, after "September 15th" and "It's for You," right before the movie ends with Blind Faith "Can't Find My Way Home."
"Good bye friend"
"Have a nice life"
Very touching. Anyone know the song being played at this part?

One of my favorite movies that I own and have watched a zillion times! This beautiful scene is so great... the dance.... Kevin (sigh) and the good byes. Man!
I will tell you the salient moment in this vid, When she hesitates, balks at the kiss after the dance...well boy, I say buh bye...no way and hey hay good bye.
I worked part -time on the air on a midwest FM public radio station in the late 80"s. We played a lot of eclectic music, fusion jazz etc. We got and played so many requests for this piece" Farmers Trust as well "Phase Dance" and "The First Circle" Pat Metheny"s music and orchestration has such kick ass rhythm and energy. I just loved spinning this on the platter on a friday night at 12;30 and into the microphone"by request PAT METHENY !!
Grande film: inevitabili applausi e lacrime.
Anybody remember the scenes that were shown on TV? There was a swimming hole sequence that sort of explained Phillip's fear of heights and I think another bit where they go drinking at a biker bar and end up knocking over a couple of choppers on the way out... if there's ever a Blu-Ray release I hope they include these scenes.
The best.....if you don't get this movie and all the layers in it.....wow....the best Costner film and a great film. If you have not done it, you got to get to DOM rock
I've probably watched Fandango 20 or 30 times, and I still love it as much as I did the first time I saw it. Their's just something about it. One of my all time favorites!
@captjohn1124 Absolutely. I have watched this 20 or 30 times also, and still love it as much as I did the first time. Pat Metheny's soundtrack gives it much heart and soul. Also love the beginning sequence set to Elton John's Saturday Night's Alright. Fun, sweet movie. :-)
I think this little known film is brilliant. I especially like the graveyard scene. This is the perfect end to the film. When Costner actually dances the Fandango with the bride it is pure romantic excellence. Big fan of Metheny since seeing this film years ago.
God, I only with the two Kevins (Costner & Reynolds) could put aside their bad blood to engineer a 25th anniversary wide-screen re-release of this move.
It never got the showing it deserved. I remember seeing it on VCR in '86 and almost bawling.
I have been looking for the musician who made this song for years. Going on music sites would bring up all kinds of songs. This probable one of my favorite songs.
love this coming of age film. Thanks for the fandango clip - such a sweet part, never get tired of it. but i especially love the part in the film where they bring suzy amis to see sam robards again- the look on his face is priceless as he runs to her!
My fathers brother in law is Kevin Reynolds. In other words, my step uncle made this movie. I get christmas cards from him, and I see him every easter! He was working on a script for William Tell, but it didn't work out :(
This scene's at the historic mission in San Elizario, Texas, just fifteen minutes from my east El Paso home. I adore this beautiful setting from this beautiful film.
The sequence of everyone leaving each other for good (or for at least a very long time) is heartbreaking. Through all the craziness and turmoil, you come out feeling some level of connection with the people you were on the journey with and then all of a sudden, it has to end.
FEMALE HERE !! this movie kills me..always has..dont have to be a guy to appreciate Fandango...this movie means so much it to me that is actually causes me butterflies and little chest pains to watch the last 10 minutes...amazing..amazing...male or female can relate to this movie...loss,love..change...moving on...ok now im gonna cry..
Back in the late 80's I saw this on HBO and loved the movie so much that I bought all the different albums and compiled my own soundtrack. The last four songs in this movie were great selections edited brilliantly. September 15th, It's For You, Farmer's Trust and Can't find my way home. I had envisioned my own wedding being in a small town park with a gazebo in the summer with Pat Metheny music playing. Wound up getting married on a snowy November day in NY. Oh well a man can dream.
One of the best films I've ever seen...absolutely amazing, there is something in this film that everyone can identify with...the end of your university days, losing someone you love, growing up, moving on, becoming an adult...this will always be one of my favourite films of all time
Im a person with over 600 skydives and experienced salsa dancer so i love the fandango at the end. This is so great. It has good acting, lots humor, seriousness, friendship and growing up . truman sparks is hillarious in this movie. we all should take trips like this in this movie. u cand find yourself. one of my alltime fav movies here.
God, that is one of the most heart-wrenching endings of all time. How could you not be moved by this movie? Great story, great cast, great soundtrack. "How about a Fandango?"
I always thought this was one of the best low budget films ever made. I love the way they put the wedding together. I don't claim to know women, but I would think there's not chick around that wouldn't love the end of this film.
One of the most beautiful endings EVER in a movie!!
This movie had it all.. Comedy, friendship comraderie, drama, and romance. coming of age during the end of the Vietnam experience and the best music of all time.
This proves that movie critics are NOT the end all, and be all, when it comes to honestly assessing a film.
When it came to home movie rentals, several video guides really nastily slammed and panned this movie! OK so these"you can't understand my HIGH ART" types are out there. I saw it and I really enjoyed it. Then again I really like Pat Metheney's music.
i believe you, but i can't imagine why critics would not like this move. It is truly a classic. deeply moving, yet not overbearing. i think i changed some after seeing it
Fandango had those two big drawbacks- originality and substance, two things which the critics lack, apparently. But we all know what an important, timeless film it is now. It will always be special.
I firdt saw thi smovie when it first came out when was a senior in high school and hated it- now more than 20 years later I love it because I understand it now- it is dead on in relating how you move on in life and the people you were once so close to an dsaw every day move on too- I always think of the fact that these guys outgrew their adolescent relationships and probably never saw each other again and I think about friends of mine this has happened to
The musical director for this movie knew what he was doing.

They wed... But then she weds again, and will most likely marry the other
guy... But he stays wed to her... To wed is "to fall in love", and to marry
is "to lie down TOGETHER" (to become one flesh)... When two wed, a new
creature is born, The Invisible Girl. He who keepeth his virgin, does better
than he who giveth her away, .. so it is written, though it may not feel that
way, at times. Gardner never said good-bye. And so, he will wait, even
unto Judgement Day... There are only 144,000.

Times of transition in life are good, and bad, but most of all unforgetable. This movie shows something like that.

Love this scene. The look of regret on Gardner's face from 4:48 - 5:01 is heartbreaking. This is a wonderful yet underrated movie!

I've probably watched Fandango 20 or 30 times, and I still love it as much as I did the first time I saw it. Their's just something about it. One of my all time favorites!
captjohn1124 2 years ago 23
@captjohn1124 Absolutely. I have watched this 20 or 30 times also, and still love it as much as I did the first time. Pat Metheny's soundtrack gives it much heart and soul. Also love the beginning sequence set to Elton John's Saturday Night's Alright. Fun, sweet movie. :-)

Incredible film. Very moving.
But, Speilberg hated it and buried it, Fandango only had a one week showing at one NY cinema and grossed $10,000.
Sam Robards really did marry Suzy Amis in 1986......but they divorced in 1994.

Corny? You bet. Captivating? Without question.

Thanks.

I think this little known film is brilliant. I especially like the graveyard scene. This is the perfect end to the film. When Costner actually dances the Fandango with the bride it is pure romantic excellence. Big fan of Metheny since seeing this film years ago.

i absolutely adore Kevin Costner in this scene...i love that he can dance, and dance well :)
ColourfulWellies904 2 years ago
God, I only with the two Kevins (Costner & Reynolds) could put aside their bad blood to engineer a 25th anniversary wide-screen re-release of this move.
It never got the showing it deserved. I remember seeing it on VCR in '86 and almost bawling.

The sequence of everyone leaving each other for good (or for at least a very long time) is heartbreaking. Through all the craziness and turmoil, you come out feeling some level of connection with the people you were on the journey with and then all of a sudden, it has to end.

I saw this film back in '85-86 at a friend's house..... His mom thought we'd love it, but most of it flew over my head..
