  • Thet got fuck all in New Zealand.

  • Soldiers fight for what we believe and love?! What bullshit! You mean the soldiers that gunned down Jewish civilians in German ghettos in the 1930's/40's? Or the ones in Vietman in Mai Lai who massacred a village of civilians? THIS is what you believe and love?! Soldiers do what they're TOLD to do. Usually, let's face it, because they're forced to for economic reasons by people who don't give a shit about them . And treat them like lepers if they survive. Wake up please .

  • This song is so intense .. Pure brilliance

  • this song is just way too imense just so ledgendary i love it it really just makes you think bout lots of things and for me really helps me appreciate the fact that im alive and all my family and friends :)

oh and love the woman at 2:26 shes so into it shes singing along get her on stage :) xx

  • Very moving song from Billy, who wrote it from his heart after hearing accounts of the terrible ordeals some of his friends had been subjected to during the conflict. He dodged the draft and was sceptical about composing such a track as it would have seen hypocrytical coming from someone who didn't go to Vietnam, but he was convinced it would act as a tribute to those who did serve, and subsequently all his fans were rewarded with a lasting memory which we can listen to when we please.

  • On that we where schock but now it is normal ase we heard on radio or on tv. But all the man en woman hou fiting for there freedom in Irak en Afganistan and all they have fiht in Bosnie, Libannon and the other Wars. We never forget them but also the man that survied it . After al this years Defenssie must more do fore al this man and woman. Holland i shame fore the day after al this terebille thinks follow,s this man and woman every day. Give theme the help that they need Pleace. Sylvia Bos

  • This song made its point then, it still does today. WW11 was the last absolutely last resort war, so why in Hell are American, British (I'm British), and other country's soldiers dying all round the globe still today? In the 21st century we should have found a better way to solve the world's problems. Perhaps we should start by stopping the arrogant speculators manipulating the future misery of the less fortunate in Society.

  • JPicc2 you are so right My brothers that were in Vietnam that died there for nothing but the lies of the politicians. Like today’s lies It is about money not what’s right or wrong.

  • The men coming home from Iraq are getting rounds of applause. The men who came home from Vietnam were shunned from society. I mean no offence towards people who fought in iraq, but lord knows vietnam was worse.

  • Words cannot describe how much the people of this country owe to the men and women of the armed forces who put there lives on the line everyday, but this song is damn close!

  • no one wins wars, any war. as one who took care of the wounded and stood helpless too... this song is too true. timeless.

  • This song still gives me the chills and puts a tear in my eye...

  • This is a great anti-war song. It shows the suffering involved in imperialist wars across the world. 'We were so gung ho to lay down our lives', shows how piped up the troops were in battle for reasons which they didn't really understand. It's the same as in Iraq and Afghanistan at the moment. Support the troops- BRING THEM HOME. No More War!!

  • Their is no justifiable reason for all of these young American men to have had to endure the misery of this war or any war for that matter. I think the revolutionary war was our last justifiable conflict. After that we seemed to have been lead around by the nose by the country we fought to gain independence from. Their propaganda lead our country into both world wars.

  • Poignant...beautiful...tragic...inspiring. A great American anthem, and perhaps an international anthem too. There aren't too many songs that hit like this, I cannot believe that I have only just heard it.

  • As true now as it was then! However...maybe the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan are the first "war on drugs". So many serving now are on serious drugs just to survive bush's wars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • love it when i first heard it , many moons ago

  • WRONG WAR THEN WRONG WARS NOW1

  • This is agreat song and video! I do not agree with the Vietnam war but I give much respect for the men and women who served and lost thier lives!

  • Semper Fi!!!

  • 0:35 needs more maracas

  • May GOD bless all of those who served in the military. Please don't get caught up in this anti- American bullsh-t. We will always support our brothers and sisters in the armed forces,By the way I like this tune.

  • 'nam 65-75, hell on earth

  • I doscovered this song in my forst year in the Marines in 85, along with brothers in arms by Dire Straights. from then on, I understood. I knew why I served. The Declaratioin of independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights. My America, and Her Flag. I believe I was blessed to be born here, and I thank the Almighty I served. I learned to serve with Gratitude for that gift. If anyone wants to burn that flag, they better thank me for making sure they are allowed the right to do so.

  • i was there to i fought in the gulf war and if any one burns the the flag thay should not live here and go some where eles

  • What an awesome song, so well written, and so passionately performed.

All we ever asked for were two simple words... Welcome Home!

I support all my Brothers and Sisters of Service.

    Thank you for posting.

    A Proud US Navy Veteran!

    Absolutely 5 *s!

I invite you to see my Fallen Warriors tribute.

I wrote and sing the song, and would love to get your opinion.

    Thanks again, Tom

  • @ tunes ~ nice tribute ~ freedom isn't free & wars ~ should be worth the expense ~

  • I am humbled.

  • I'm not big on getting into political discussions but the exception is our VFW's and the hell they went through. It makes the worst day you think you ever had look like a party. Almost without fail our soldiers were doing exactly what they were told to do. They gave their lives, body's, and were often mentally scarred for the rest of their life. It's incredibly ignorant not to be able to separate our govt.'s policies, versus the plight of our soldiers. I thank them. That is this song's story.

  • So much war! So much death! Is it really needed? I don't think so! :-[

  • Your wrong

    War is needed to either:

    A. Get your point across

    B.Take what you need/want/dont have

    C.Free oppressed masses

    D.Protect yourselfes from the above

  • war must be an absolute last resort but i am not opposed to it

  • "so long as there are men there will be war"

    -Albert Einstein

  • The viets were great fighters and the americans should aknowledge this or else they are confirming they lost the war against ... (put yourself in the balance).

  • This song isnt about which side is right, and which side is wrong. Its not about politics or propoganda. This song is merely about men being in such a terrible situation that they only have each other to depend on, nothing else. I am a USMC SGT that fought in Iraq, and when the part about "we will all go down together" puts a tear in my eye because that is the gods honest truth. Thank you billy joel for this song!!

  • @JPicc2 My father was a Vietnam vet, and though he never talked about the act of war itself, he always talked about the brother hood, amongst his fellow soldiers they kept eachother sane as well as alive.

  • @JPicc2 you are right the song is defenetly about the man who served their country.

The only right thing to do is to respect those man even if you don't agree with the political leaders.

  • @JPicc2

    you said it all

  • @JPicc2 Thank you and people like my father who serve in the military

  • @JPicc2 well said, and total respect to you, Sir.

  • vietnam was f3ckd up ~ shameful ~ my condolences vets ~

This song symbolises our soildiers, our people, our country, our race as a whole. Dam it symbolises the entire universe, nay multiverse. It is not just a song!

Just kidding, yeah its just a song.

  • @ImmortalAngel1993 ~true~ however ~wyr is bord though

  • we get the same shit here exstremists moslems want to be aloud to hold protests and call our brave service men and women in coffins being called baby killers and other vile crap at wooden bassset no fucken way may gaddafi and that lokerbie bomber rot together in hell

  • i am an x miltary man fought in the gulf war back in 1990 and i have a lot of respect for the vets that fought in the vit nam war 5 star vid brings back to the day i lost brothers that i lost i will never forget

  • Hey Ignorant303, only the American side gets my respect! The VC only had to survive. America's men, my men, had to fight a war with politicans shoving one up their collective butts. At least 50,000 dead and treated horribly when they got home. Thank a Vet and shake his hand.

  • 'Only had to survive'? Only? Mate, the story is far more complexed than that.. you are clearly affected by the American propaganda bullshit. You don't know feck all, so don't go around making assumptions, and showing 'respect'. You're complaining about 50,000 dead when the Americans bombed the smithereens out of millions of Vietnamese, and millions are still affected by the chemical weapons your so called 'friendly' America used.. God you're ignorant.

  • @survivor631 only had to survive? only? riiiiight....think about what you just said....

  • Respect should be, MUST be, given to both parties, 'cuz everyone suffered TOO much in this battle...

  • am a brit when i played this song me and my son sang this together the true perspective of this song is it tells the true story of what vietnam was to they men

  • "Wait, he didn't pay for his meal!"

    "GAH! He ALWAYS does that!"

  • we passed the hash pipe and played our Doors tape....

  • I do not think so. I never heard of him as a Marine. Either way, this is the best representation of war from someone who was not there that I ever heard.

  • did billy joel serve

  • No. He's from Long Island, which had very high % in 'Nam. Like Ron Kovic ("Born on the Fourth of July").

Lance Corp. J.L. Tewkesbury, USMC, 1964, Republic of South Vietnam. R.I.P.

  • no because he was either an only child or the soul bread winner. he fell under the stipulation to not get drafted he didnt dodge the draft

  • Awesome song!

  • RIP, Uncle Bobby. USS Indianapolis. July 30, 1945. 20 years old.

  • @florange00

And thanks for delivering one of the bombs that ended the war.

  • RIP Mac & Smudge, 22 Cheshire regiment

  • so good i want to fight

  • WOW...always loved this song...NEVER SAW IT... THANKS

  • Karianna, with respect, i don't think this is a tribute to "our" men and women, but to all innocent, we are all "our's".

  • The men who fought and died, or fought and survived against the odds in a war they had no say in deserve our respect and our appreciation. Beautiful tribute to our men and women in the armed forces!

  • This song gives me chills. i love billy joel <3

  • great fucking song

  • This is a great song that , as with an unfortunate amount of material in his catalogue, gets ruined by overproduction. He should've just left with him and the acoustic guitar. What would ordinarily be a great chorus gets weighed down with bombast and it just comes out as sounding cheesy.

  • So I suppose Apocalypse Now is the most offensive film ever made then?

  • The fact is, art IS hubristic and over-the-top, as is everything about human nature and reality itself. We're just in denial of that fact because we wan to be "hip". Our modern notion of what sincerity actually is is completely off-base. Then again, there's still a difference between bullshit and non-bullshit. (eg: Beethoven's Ninth vs. "Total Eclipse of the Heart") That NEVER changes.

  • Well, i'm not positing that it's differential equations, but I think it's safe to say that the first half of the song is beautiful and moving, while the back half is rather crappy. I never said bombast was an awful thing to have in music, nor did I say most great music doesn't have an element of it in it. I simply said in this particular song, it's a fifth wheel.

  • I only want to indicate the words "terrorist, fundamentalist and extremist" can be used to everyone whatever his intention.

This means the person who uses them cannot justify his actions and is a liar !

  • Yes, they could use those words whatever the intentions are. However, they may be using them out of line. What happened in New York on 9/11 was an act of terrorism. The train bombing in Madrid was an act of terrorism. They occurred for no other reason than the more hardcore, violent portion of Muslims attacking those who do not adhere to the same beliefs.

Why are you talking about this, anyway? This is a beautiful song about a bunch of frightened young men who were drafted, not volunteers.

  • I saw Billy, do this song in concert, from the beginning of the song , to the end of the song it was just amazing, I had goose bumps, and I felt I was there (at war) with the men. I found that I was crying at the end of the song. The man (Billy joel) can not only sing, but writes great too.

  • Wow........sad song,but memorable tribute.

  • What an amazing song.

  • Thanks!

  • Pitty... this isn't the original footage clip. Does anyone know where I can find it?

  • to quote Dan Ackroyd regarding you "mittROMNEY666" : " JANE YOU IGNORANT SLUT!" hahahahahah

    kizzmyamericanazz

  • ive been to war you tosser ! dont see you volunteering ! how about i come and kill you ? see wot you have to say then ! . SGT Hopper, Royal Scotts Dragoon Guards,

  • dude......your fucked up

  • It it were actually possible to selectively kill everyone who fucks everything up for the rest of us and doesn't care.....forget it, it isn't.

  • does anyone know when this song came out?i just think this song is great and tells a great history.

  • August 82

  • I don't know how Billy Joel got it right, but he hit alot of the memories I have of my two years in the artillery there, have written a few comments elsewhere, "so dark at night" the vc could have tweaked my nose while on bunkerline, every night for two years while at home we were forgotten, and couldn't get a job when we got back, even with a degree in education, the army experience counted for nil and like college was a huge waste.

  • First time i heard this song, unbelievably, was when the cast of Saturday night live sang it.

this song has, like many other songs, touched me emotionally, like it was meant to be on the soundtrack of my life, at this moment in my life.

it also puts a face on a war, hurts my heart, and makes me appreciate everything that the bravest people of our countries are doing at this very moment.

    Kris McPherson,

    Calgary, Canada.

  • Love this song too.

    Ur in canada?! awesome!

  • Yes! thanks Canada is pretty good. I hope your home is awesome too!

  • Thank you! It is.

  • best song ever

  • Beautiful song and time, Adam -John,

I have you in my heart and soul. Praying

to you get a chance to "come home"!

I love you,Adam--You have begun mapping out your young life..AMEN!

    Come on home soon, Son.

Wished I had been here for you..

Talk with God and you will get back

    safely.

Love,Hope & Happiness onto you and this war.

    Loving you, MoM{Ruth}

  • one of the ever best songs

  • the most important line is "we promised our mothers we would write" she was the one worrying we didnt give a shit so gung ho or pissed?

    ex brit regular (20 years)

  • been looking for this song like ages!

great song and so beautiful but yet so sad..

  • Old man sacrifice young man for what they say is patriotic.

I wonder will we ever learn?

  • We learn that the young man is dumb everytime.

  • Learn what. That we should just let ourselves be walked over?

Then we would be the French.

  • I wonder how many on those photos didn't make it back home..... What a terrible waste!

  • The Vietnam war was not a waste. Speaking as an immigrant to America, albeit not from Vietnam. World powers have a responsibilty on a global scale that you have at an individual one. When you see someone assaulted in the street do you help? It's the same with countries, or it should be. America fought to save those people. Now look at the numbers of dead Americans/Australians/S. Vietnamese, etcetera and compare it to the Vietnamese who were murdered in the purges. Was leaving really right?

  • we lost, the north Vietnamese still killed and took over the south, plus our troops, who didn't have to die,I"d say it was a waste, yes it was a nice idea, a sentiment, but a waste.

  • We lost because we ran, a nice sentiment of a coward who can't accept that we failed an innocent people and left them to die.

  • Really? You think LBJ and Nixon were altruists? Well okay, LBJ was just fucking clueless, Nixon was a coward and had no hope in hell of running a war properly. When a war is THAT flawed, it might as well be pointless because its purpose is no more or less than a theory, and an ill-formed one at that.

  • saddest song ever and i hope to be one of these amazing people you guys are talking about i mean I'd absulutley hate to die but for my country is so worth it im sorry for all the POW's that didn't make it and we really didn't need to go any way

  • amazingley amazing

  • Billy Joel > all the rest.

  • I'm a former Marine who got out because of the stupidity of the war in Iraq. I wasn't going to die because of the dumb decisions our leaders made.

Vietnam was equally as stupid. It shouldn't have gone on for so long. If common sense had ruled, there would be less names written on that Vietnam memorial.

Like Marines in Iraq, I'm sure Vietnam vets were cruel and did horrible things to civilians. The world can't feel sorry for you all the time.

  • Amen sir, Amen.

  • Blly had the right to sing and compose this song as a former vietnamveteran. Respect to all who risked and risk there lifes for freedom. As I am from Belgium Europe we know what war is, thanks to American, Canadian and British friends we defeated the Nazi's back in WW2. We will never forget that and the soldiers who fought there are hounored every year untill this very day.

  • Comment removed

  • thx steveo both my grandparents fought in ww2 thats nice to hear...seems these days the world's forgotten about that war and all they want to do is talk about how evil america is

  • Would you fight in Afghanistan? Do you consider that a dumb decision? Or do you actually believe that we should not prevent further attempts at terrorism.

  • War does not prevent terrorism. War IS a form of terrorism. It's really just a matter of perspective.

  • Yes I would carry the torch.

  • "MrHackero"So why do you think former US Navy UDT/SEAL Jesse Ventura says " Why did they"(Then US Government) Lie to us?!!"..about the gulf of tonkin "Incident"

    State( Department )Sponsored Terrorism

is the same AND more of ideological-abusemisuseofreligion terrorism...911 inside job buddy!

    get with the program son!

  • They will not be prevented by fighting in Afganistan.

None of the 9/11 terrorists was actually trained there.

And Timothy McVeigh also never visited Afganistan.

    Terrorists work from within.

They don't need a territory abroad.

It is plain ly wrong to assume that and a waste or resources to fight terror abroad

  • The Americans just wanted independence, like most colonies that are a far distance over see.

  • You can as well change the name Americans into Taliban to express the same thing, both terrorists and now fighting eachother !

This is true though my former remark was more like sarcastic.

I have a problem with the vocabulary used to justify the war against the Taliban such as :

terrorist : term used by the english to identify an american freedom fighter.

fundamentalist : someone who fanatically holds on to the constitution.

extremist : everyone, even the extreme moderate ones.

  • In saying that you could say that the heroes of the 1916 rising in Ireland were terrorists too for fighting for independence! Get a grip!

  • Would you doubt the English would have called your herous "terrorists" ? Actually many still do ! Get a grip !

  • BTW that remark about King George was purely sarcastic, I think I was bored when I made it, my bad !

  • Yeah, your bad for expecting people not to throw a shitfit about an obviously absurd point.

Stop making excuses for other people's idiocy and don't be afraid to believe that it's their fault. You'll be happier.

  • It is so fucking simple: The UN has to get the NATIONAL police of every mid-eastern country to cooperate with them in an effort to wipe the terrorists out. The best thing the developed world can do is HELP COUNTRIES FIGHT THEIR OWN TERRORISTS FROM WITHIN. This involves brains, not bombs.

  • narozzz, unbelievable you just invented the hot water, that it could be so fucking simple, you should be awarded the one and only simpleton nobel prize.

  • Guuh....okay, so let's say I rephrased that first sentence to read: "This is going to be a challenge but it makes a hell of a lot more sense than anything we're tried so far", would you still get yer briefs in a bunch and get all hissy at me?

It should go without saying that NOTHING IS SIMPLE. Grown-ups know that. But sometimes they talk silly is all.

  • God bless each and everyone of them past and present. No Surrender.

  • Let's get beyond GWB, please.

  • i am brit what asong just makes ur hair stand on end semper vie

  • Dear manick45,

Thanks very much. The trick, though, is NOT to go down. And although there's a lot of luck involved in that, it seemed to me it was usually the best who went down. They were the real heroes.

  • I have a great respeect for soldiers, and thank you

very much for saving us in the 2de world war with Germany.

I despise the politics whom do this to us and the man/woman before us. Big ashame.

    Maaike , born 1940 Holland

  • soldiers do what soldiers do. It is the politicians who send them who deserve the venom.

  • I was in the USMC from 1963 to 1967, and I was in Chu Lai, Vietnam in 1965 - 1966.

    This song says it all.

  • Thanks for your service. I was born the year we ended conventional support, but I consider myself educated on the subjectof Vietnam. Growing up in the time I did, every psycopath on TV was a VV. If someone was slightly unhinged, it was always mentioned that he was a vet. It was many years later that I learned how far left our media is. I am proud of my family members that served in the struggle for Vietnam. War is hell, but second guessing troops in the field, and off, is wrong.

  • clearly said...those who bash our men and women in uniform...have NO right to speak freely. Those men and women, fight and DIE so we can live Free. And it shames me today at the level of disrespect our soldiers get. I am ashamed to say I am 'unfit to Serve' because in a heartbeat, I would. I owe the men who died for my Freedom at least that.

  • Thank you, soldier.

  • you are a hero that is coming from a kid who respects his country. im only 11 but i cry every time i hear this song. we'd all go down together.

  • ten men

  • nor888vast695. U say SPARTAN, DESERTER, COWARD - bet u believe in GLORY. Aint no such thing. I have phearts, medals w/Vdevices & I'm nothig. A guy buried age 19 in church grave Lowell MA - he's a hero - hes fuckin dead. One I still cry about. He is what this song/video is bout, not fuckin GWB. Cease insulting heros by posting your GWB comments here. We don't fuckin want em. Will u b a man & stop posting GWB on this hero site & post a I'm sorry.

  • I can post GWB till the cows come home. victory and defeat are the same they are the same: dead, physicaly broken, and minds unhinged. Joel says that in the opening bars of his song. You stand up for GWB; tell the world he was a hero who by political connections avoided being killed like your friend. You're venting your hurt in the wrong direction. I was in RVN and I lost a friend from where I live. My brother-in-law was in RVN. We both have AO poison. You & GWB have a happy day.

  • (nor888vast695 sent his reply to me) U say I stand up for GWB? Youre fucked up - I happen to hate GWB. I'm venting ? U r venting. U connected GWB with Nam - there's very little connection. Say u have ao poison? Heres the truth bout majority guys still fucked up by nam 40 years later. They couldnt handle it - And if they had never gone to Nam most who still find some excuse in their life to become fucked up about. Right u would be unstable no matter what u had to use as an excuse.

  • i fell sorry, semper fi

  • nor888vast695. I dont give shit bout GWB. U seem uptight bout something that in nam we would label as Don't mean nothin. Long ago I forgave war protestors, demostrators, those who fled to canada, assholes that believed we murdered women & children. It's all over, it's are done, it didn't mean nothin. U need to get presceptive, u need to go put your GWB posts on a site concerning GWB. THIS ONE is about the vets. If u were this annoying in 69 we would have already put 3 burst in your face.

  • This is my absolute favorite song by Billy Joel, so well done and gives me goosebumps (and usually makes me bawl). I can't imagine the hellish conditions that these men endured, and not all came home alive. Kennoetzel, RIGHT ON BROTHER!!! I completely agree with your post!!!!! God bless our military, everywhere and always. :(

  • What r u idiots writing about bush for - he has absolutely fucking nothing to do with vietnam - nothing to do with this great song. What is this about - look at the fucking video. Every fucking kid u see there was in hell - I put some of them in a stinkin zippered body bag - they came home in pieces to loving relatives. Fuck your talk about bush - respect the meaning of this vidso.

  • There were 2 Spartans that Leonidas ordered to retreat because both had serious eye ailmets & couldn't fight. One ordered his servant to lead him to the Spartan line & died with 1000 other Greeks. For a year the lone Spartan traveled about Greece asking for "fire & water" i.e. acceptance. He was simply known as the "Coward." He redeemed his error at Thermopylae by dying in the front line at Plataea. GWB is a coward so low he couldn't hold a candle to light this lone Spartan's way.

  • So what was GWB's excuse for deserting his unit during the Vietnam war? Hell he couldn't even produce an order relieving hiM of duty after he served his TX AirNG in trying to establish when and where he served. I have every order issued to me and he couldn't find his discharge ORDERS!!!! So your answer about what Viet Name has to GWB: DESERTION during war.

  • GWB was a coward who deserted his post in wartime. It dowsn't make any difference whether he was NG or regular. As a Vet Nam vet do you actually think that he is one of us? A goddam DESERTER.

  • Billy Joel is an absolute legend

  • Sorry but.. who thinks WTH! that bush the biggest noob in the hystorie? i like him.. but some times... he do a wrong thing, everyone make a fault and if he it makes he is crimyneel he is good.;) nobody is perfect!

  • Bush did not send soldiers to vietnam it was i think Bush Sr Or another...

  • Kennedy sent advisers to train the South Vietnamese, LBJ after Kennedy's assassination prolong the war and Nixon ran on a campaign on ending it which he didn't , then he decided to have the Vietnamese take control of the fight, I think we all know what happened after that, I might have some of my facts wrong I'm pretty fucked up so I would factcheck it. Regardless if the Politicians let the Military loose we could have taken Vietnam anytime we wanted.

  • i am in complete agreement bush can be bad but id say he would be better than kerry or gore and bush senior was a war hero

  • Why do people fight on comments for videos...

these comments should be twords billy joels amazing talent.

This song truley represents the efforts of the soldiers for a useless cause. Its a sad representation of what our country and its patriotic citizens have been through.

And for those burning people for saying "bush is the biggest criminal in history" dont attack them like insicure idiots. Ignore it or ask them politely why they believe that.

    Your all acting like politicians...lol

  • The words and music are doing just what the record is about. Evoking war that is next to criminal and what to do about it. Yes it is good music but it has not a light-hearted subject.
