  • I don't know if god is real or not. I really have no belief in any of the "sacred" books like the bible. However, I have seen the comfort the grieving attain through prayer. I think it calms the troubled mind. When someone is suffering and they say all I have is Jesus, even though I don't believe, I still get it, and would never want to take that away from them. Even an atheist can pray. If I prayed it would be to whatever gives me the strength to go on. prayer isn't just for the religous is it?

  • I think you are right that prayer can benefit the person who prays, even if there is no God. I think you are also right in not wanting to take prayer away from those who find comfort in it. However, I happen to believe that there is a God who answers prayer. I have seen some amazing answers in my own life. I recommend resources from DoesGodExist-dot-org and videos from DoesGodExist-dot-TV to help answer the question of whether there is a God.

  • I've always thought of prayer as a time of self-reflection. A time to think about the things you did well and the things you did poorly so that you can improve yourself on it later. And as such, this form of meditation or self-reflection is not entirely unique to Christianity.

  • The difference in Christianity is that Christians believe there actually is a God who cares about our needs and responds to our prayers.

  • God is not a human. God is a LIE!

  • Correct on the first point. Wrong on the second point.

  • If God is a loving father why wouldn't he respond favorably to the requests of his chidren? Human fathers do.

  • Not exactly. Every father, no matter how loving, must at some point refuse their child's wishes to allow them to separate what is important and a what is a mere pleasure.

  • You are exactly right. That explains why God does not always answer our prayers, at least not in the way we want. God is not our slave to give us everything we want. The same can be said of a good parent who does not give his child everything the child wants.

  • That didn't really answer the question. We should pray to lower our body temperatures? What is the need for supplication? Why should we take our needs to a higher power? I thought god helps those who helps themselves, however convenient an excuse that may be. What an unsatisfying dodge to a legitimate question.

  • Where do you get "God helps those who help themselves." It is certainly not in the Bible.

  • hahaha, in no way duz he answer the real why do we pray n ask god for things if he already has a grand plan. Actually the only thing he duz is give a natural explanation of y humans get fooled by the idea of prayer n religion. Face it, its not that ne1 actualy realizes it, but people only pray because we can not stand the fact the we acually don't have a say in the outcome of most things that happen to us. It's why people are willing to reamin ignorant so they can live their live blissfully.
