  • Letterman was so goofy looking back then

  • @zepps88 Was?

  • Johnny & Waylon among many others in their time started country!!! just not the same anymore.

  • what a shame what commercial music has become.it just sickens me.it still brings a tear to my eye sometimes when i see these 2 together on these old youtube uploads.thanks so much for sharing.

  • Wow, Johnny Cash and David Letterman is both the same height (6ft1 and a half) yet Johnny looks much bigger then David! I mean just look at Johnnys head, arms, hands etc. And compare with the much "smaller" David. Johnny Cash truly was a man of big proportions! :D RIP Legend

  • I have played Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings songs thru the years...Both taught me a lot about music and appreciate what one has even though I never reached their success...RIP both of you..Thanks for the memories

  • you'll never see legends on talk shows like this anymore

  • 2 Beautiful, talented men that will live forever.

  • "There was a period in my life that the only person who'd talk to me was the Lord, and the only woman that'd have me was Betty Ford."

    awesome!!!!

  • awe...legends of country !!

  • old school letterman was actually funny. leno gets all the hate but modern day letterman is ATROCIOUS!!!

  • I adore johnny cash he's my hero a legend in his own time hehe

  • Strangest comment.. I can hear a whistle in Johnnys nose.. When hes tellin his drug stories at about 7 mins 50 secs you can hear it whistlin! Haha But this a sweet video.. Something not to be long forgotten..

  • @june21stgem sounds like some respiratory distress, like he's having a hard time getting enough oxygen :(

  • WOW nothing else to say :)

  • To think, Johhny Cash,Bob Dylan,Joni Mitchell, Graham Nash, Kris Kristofferson all in the same house writing music history!! thank you! AND WAYLON! AMAZING!

  • i want to be reborn 50 years earlier

  • Aw, wish the song was there.

  • @cindyshealed... It is, look at my description for the link to the song.

  • @RHodge317 Thanks. :-)

  • I take it back, Letterman actually was funny here, I forget that he used to be funny.....

  • Letterman shows just how out of his element he is here...., but John is too gracious to let him embarrass himself.

  • Letterman needs to go off the air. He's burnt out.

  • Come back please.

  • Great interview. Terrible quality video but it's amusing. It's kind of psychedlic, I like it lol

  • Jennings was an OG.R.I.P

  • Damn,Ole Waylon looks edgy as hell with his arms crossed.Something tells me he was fibbing on the drugs thing.Still he was awsome,so was cash.

  • It's 2011 and congrat's to Dave for keeping his show alive all these years later.

But honestly, I can't remember anyone bigger than these two on his show, and that includes Presidents....lol. R.I.P. Johnny & Waylon UR missed.

  • What a great piece. A treasure for all music lovers! Letterman -- what a lucky person!

  • Watseka theatre Watseka Illinois Summer 2011 Country music concert series; July 2 Marty Stuart; July 15 The Bellamy Brothers; August 5 Josh Thompson; August 26 Ricky Skaggs; September 3 Jerrod Niemann.

  • little like abbott and Costello them two huh?

  • Cash once said he was 6'1 1/2 (187 cm) but damn he truly was a big man! Much bigger looking then David Letterman which claims he's even 6'2 (probably 6'1 1/2 as well). Some sources says Cash was 6'2 as well. But since he is a honest man I can very well believe that he is 6'1 1/2. Half an inch, whatever. What was strange to see in this video was that when he stood up he looked taller then Letterman?? I may be wrong though..

  • how comfortable those seats.. cowboys belong not in there

  • Waylon, J Cash, Hank Jr. George Jones, Merle Haggard,, 5 of the best country music ever had....

  • David Letterman sounded like Christopher Reeve when he was young.

  • @AICMetal94 hahah now that you mention it! He DOES sound like Christopher Reeve! :D When mentioning Reeve, great actor, maybe on of the best and truly a Superman in reallife! RIP Christopher Reeve

  • 1k a day?? holy shit!

  • @LastDays77 - and that was back in the 70's and 80's!

  • two leftys :)

  • thats why dave is the man to this day

  • Waylon is the greatest of all time, then Hank

  • @gsxraddict well, that might be true if Willie doesn`t count

  • Thank you. I missed this the first time around.

  • great clip. thanks for sharing.

  • I miss you Hoss!!

  • Mary Stewarts big break was with johnny Cash.

  • I find it funny how much bigger Cash look to Letterman in bodysize, but they stand at the same height, at 6'1 and a half..

  • Did you have snacks?

  • such character and entertainers....They sure as hell dont make em like this anymore!

  • These two boys take up the whole stage... don't you love it... See that hay seed growing out of there hair. ?

  • Cash is the greatest of alltime

  • My favorite Country 2 Legends, thanks for posting this clip

  • My favorite Country 2 Legends, thanks for posting this clip

  • back when Letterman was funny

  • Awesome Vid!!!!!

  • You will never see another pair of country singers like Waylon and Cash. Fantastic upload!!

  • I love both these guys' honestly. Not like the young brats who deny their addictions. Waylon had many years(from early 80's) of heavy labored breathing (lungs shot) the the diabetes( had his right foot amputated) and heart problems. He moved to Chandler AZ with Jessi & Shooter and that basically gave him more years with us. Both Jessi & June were obviously strong women:) John/Waylon music icons & best friends. We have 4 generations of fans in my family.

  • I miss them both, any of you know why Waylon finally kicked the drugs? I remember a story just not sure of its validity. apparently he saw his kid with a straw up his nose pretending to be daddy. I am glad he kicked and was able to survive for awhile on this earth and share more of himself to us.

  • @denniswilsonfan The story you heard is correct,I have read this in the WAYLON biography by Lenny Kayle if you lke to read I recomend it.I bought my book in one of the downtown Nashville stores, but you may find it in your local library.

  • Waylon Is GOD!

  • when interviews were more than just a two minute sell for a new book movie or record.

this shows 2 f the best entertainers of all time having fun and reliving fantastic tales

  • Thanks for posting, rare moments from two music legends, awesome.

And this was Letterman when he was a good comedian and interviewer.

Now he's just an old cynical left-wing political hack, not worth watching anymore.

  • How young is dave lol!!!!

  • Lol... Johnny and Waylon roommates! I'd feel sorry for their neighbors! Hhaa.

  • Priceless......makes my hair stand up on my kneck........did you have snacks? Lmao I'd like to know what they where thinking, they both nodded and didn't say much.

  • I am 61 and have lived through some good music. I made out with Janis Joplin in 1967 in SF at the Avalon Ballroom.

  • !!!!!! I love it!

  • waylons seat is about a foot higher than johnys.

  • From back when Letterman was worth a shit. Johnny and Waylon are too cool for school.

  • Waylon said he had 11 months sobriety.

He sure looks high as hell here, don't he?

Hahaha! He's fucked up on the good shit!

  • Did you have snacks? hahaha

  • damn. look at the stage and set up. too bad you didnt get to hear Mr Cash sing.

  • Love you guys... forever...

  • No thumbs down yet.

  • great footage of these two legends of music, thank you for uploading.

  • waylon movie

  • waylon movie

  • Thank God for you tube or this would be lost.

  • ole johnny got addicted the last time due to a ostrich attack on his petting zoo farm. that almost killed him. the only thing that saved his life is he had on a belt buckle that kept the claw from slicing on down south of his stomach if ya know what i mean. it also kept his intestines from falling out of his stomach plus he broke like four ribs in the attack. serious no bull. godbless.

  • john spoke of bob dylan. does anybody ever see him anymore???? for a couple of years i thought bob was long gone. does anybody know???? thanks and godbless.

  • The screen isn't fuzzy because it was 1985...That's just because the camera can't handle this much awesomeness in one shot.

  • What a GEM!

  • Ol Waylon said 1000 dollars a day WOW , I heard a dr told him the inside of his nose looked like raw hamburger in 83 it's amazing on that much blow and still the best there ever was , God bless Waylon Jennings

  • This made my evening. Thanks so much for uploading this. Cash entered the Betty Ford Clinic on December 20th, 1983, after an addiction to painkillers. He says on Letterman (above) that he's been clean for 14 months, so the date of the Letterman taping is probably around March 1985.

  • Love Johnny's giggle at 2:19 and this whole clip

  • Johnny is just too g@@@d !

  • Love you both

  • I Miss you both, I play your songs every night

  • We miss you waylon and jonny love ya

  • I was so happy to watch this because it's one of the few times Letterman doesn't turn into an over-controlling douchebag. He has a respect for what are essentially the two founding pillars of modern country music. Good job, Dave!

  • Painkillers are the easiest drug to get hooked on for numerous reasons. They come from a dr., you can function on them & most of the time people dont know your on them, they put you in a good mood & give you energy & your whole body hurts when you try to get off them so you keep putting it off.

  • I wonder if elvis got him started on pills like they show in the movie ? Good thing OC's weren't around back then

  • there will never be another like johnny or waylon, but we are all blessed to have had them in country music. They are the definition of country music.

  • awesome video

  • Thank you for posting this....great stuff!

  • The two best. I had a dream last night that I was hanging out with Waylon & we started singing, "The Dukes of Hazzard," together. Man, it brings a tear to my eye!

  • I like to listen to Johnny, Waylon, and Hank all the time. out of all the country music these two take the the top

  • I love how all of those guys would just pass songs to one another and play together and cover one another. What an awesome generation of musicians.

  • lettermans young

  • I absolutely hate YouTube's new format.

I hate it I tell ya!

    I hate it!

  • This is freakin classic. Great video. Thanks.

  • David Letterman is an idiot!

    Love Johnny and Waylon!

  • David Letterman is such a huge presence and icon, but he becomes so small when these two step up. RIP Johnny and Waylon

  • Precious ! .. There will never again be anyone or anything like these two wonderful human beings and their music, soul and spirit. It's a bleesing that we will always have them on recordings and video clips like this. Still I'm sad they have both passed on and I will miss them dearly. Thanks for posting this !

  • I could listen to Johnny Cash all day.

  • 'Late Night with David Letterman.'

    From Season 4 - Aired -Thursday Feb 7 1985.

song 'Here Comes That Rainbow Again.'

Johnny Cash is 52 yrs old.

    Waylon is 47 yrs old.

    Dave is 37 yrs old...

  • Yes j. R. And waylon were the best! They are in heaven now making great music togather again!

  • @Cartercash4ever amen to that friend

  • For me, the world seemed to stop for a minute, and has been turning a little slower and sadder since Waylon passed away. He was such an original, I don't think he could be or ever will be replaced, and certainly not forgotten. Rest in peace hoss!

  • You couldn't have said it better "I agree 100%" I liked everyone of those guys, But Waylon was my favorite lol... we even share the same name, his first, my middle. R.I.P. Waylon

  • Wow I dnt even know this existed! J. R. Was n still is the greatest of them all. I'm sure he is still making great music in heaven!

  • The two very greatest artists to walk this earth -period! I'll always love them and play/sing their songs! They're up in musicheaven jamming with Elvis, Roy, Roger and few other greats! Regards, Hoss Curtis -find me on YT too!

  • Thank you SO much for posting this for us to enjoy. Man, we miss them so much, don't we, Marty.

  • Letterman is a flagrant bootlicker.

But Waylon in '88 when I saw him the night before he went to see Johnny in the hospital down in NB was the most gracious, polite, kind, humble, and personable entertainer I ever met (unf never got to meet Johnny) and so was Jessie. The next day Waylon got checked into same hospital as Johnny. He lived hard. But he was a very kind man, to this 26-yr-old gal back then. Slainte va.

  • @FriendofRamblinJacbootlicker??? what the hell is letterman supposed to do? be rude, talk over his guests, make tem feel like not coming back? He's doing his job, letting them speak and trying to present them as well as possible. It's called doing a good job.

  • Johnny's nose is whistling.

  • lol..i noticed that too, i didnt think anyone else did

  • classic. I love Waylon and Johnny... these guys were great.

  • @jnorton1 were?

  • This is awesome! Thanks!

  • This is brilliant!! Thanks for sharing this!!!......

  • I agree with you teeger!! They had a lot of guts!!!! *****

  • This is great thanks for sharing , it's gone straight onto my favourites

  • Eddie i agree!..right into my favorites!

My two Heroes!..Thank you for this anymore like it?

  • Both Johnny and Waylon were so candid about their drugs...Bravo! It took Waylon a while to slim down again after his withdrawal period. Was there a song with the 2 of them from this show?

  • Why did u cut out Johnny's performance? I want to watch!!!

  • Sorry but I had to keep it as close to 10 minutes as I could, it was just a matter of time. I wanted to get the whole interview on one video.

  • Cld u upload only the performance then? That wld be great!!

  • I can do that. I'll try to get that up within the next couple days.

  • Thanks!!! I subscribed :)

  • I've found that youtube will allow videos up to 11:00 minutes long , but not 0:01 second more . I've cut some videos , close to 10:00 , 'cuz I thought that was the limit (as it states , when you upload a video). Sometimes that extra minute would make a big difference . I just thought i'd share that , what I figured out through trial & error .

  • Great to see those two ol' boys together on the Letterman-show. Never knew they were. Giants both of them. Ain't nobody like them around today.

  • I love these older pieces from tv and specials since I haven't seen very many of them. Keep up the good work!
