He may have been a HOF'er if he hadn't got hurt. In a Bear loss- he got sacked twice...but avoided perhaps 20 sacks...the man was awesome in the pocket, out of the pocket, and that quick release is what QB's dream of now. The injury was heart and talent breaking. Thanks #7 and thanks for posting
I was born in 84 and I can remember watching some Majik Man games with my dad when I was a little kid. I've been a spoiled Packer fan watching some great QBs.
Easily the best QB the Packers had between Dickey and Favre. Injuries were what really curtailed his career as already mentioned. I don't think most Packers fan who followed the team during that '89 season will forget him though. I was 9 when he had that great year and it was really the first I remembered enjoying as a young fan. I even remember cheering for the Bengals to beat the Vikings on MNF the final week of the season, but it was not to be unfortunately. Glad he's in the Packers HoF!
Jumbo Elliott or Dermontti Dawson might have prevented the Tony Mandarich screw up. Drafting one of those two lineman would have made the offensive line not as much as a problem. Barry Sanders would have fixed the running game and might have helped the 1989 Pack into Playoffs.
Sanders would have prevented Don's injury in 1990. The Packers leading rusher in 1990 was Micheal Haddix and that didn't help Don out. Haddix is worst RB ever that drafted in the 1st round that people forgot about.
The 1988 draft did plan a role for Green Bay on why Don got banged up. Sterling was a great pick, Keith Woodside was a good 3rd down pack, Chuck Cecil was a good pick, but the Packers screwed in the 2nd round. Green Bay Drafted Shawn Patterson instead of Jumbo Elliott or Dermontti Dawson for offensive line. Dawn would have been a great center for the Packers and would have plowed running lanes for running backs. That would have helped out Don out in terms of teams not gaining up on the pass.
Packers GM Tom Braatz failed Don. Tom failed Don because some of Tom's mistakes on draft day played a role for Don's injuries. Sterling Sharpe was a great pick, but he failed on giving a decent offensive line and a decent running game for any Green Bay Quarterback.
It began with Brent Fullwood being drafted in the first round. Brent was injury prone and was high risk and high reward going into the 1987 draft and Tom didn't try to correct it before 1990.
@7thlutz The Packer turnaround began when Parins stepped down and Harlan took over. Harlan made many changes which changed the organization enough for Wolf to take the job the second time (he was offered the job before Braatz but turned it down). But Wolf took the job the second time and the rest is history. Nearly two decades of good to great football, between the early 90's era where the Packers were a QB "puppy mill" for the NFL and a headcoaching "puppy mill" and the modern era. Thanks Bob..
@27BigE it was still the better choice, after a rotator cuff, and a severe ankle injury, majik just wasnt majik anymore. scott mitchell just had all his success in a couple of years. he was not a franchise quarterback.
also this vid kinda scares me about rodgers... cuz rodgers reminds me a little of majik... great stats 2nd leading rusher on the team... finding the open guy accurate ect... i just hope rodgers doesnt get injured
The Majik Man was truly magic for that short time. He was a joy to watch back in the day. He brought the Packers out of the doldrums and paved the way for Brett Favre. He was and remains very under-appreciated.
WOW. What a great vid and posting! That packers bears game in 1989 was an all time classic due to the Bears domination of the Packers at that time. Majkowski was a special player, too bad injuries shortened his career but many will never forget him.
call me crazy but i liked majik better than favre. if his career hadn't tragically ended so early everyone would be talking about him instead of brett.
A sad story, yes, but only because he got HURT. A torn rotator cuff has curtailed the careers of a few good QBs especially those from the old NFC Central like Jim McMahon and Gary Danielson. It was a bad break for Majkowski, and he never really had the chance to prove that he was more than a one-year wonder.
And there are jerseys, but they are wayyyyy overpriced.
I also feel special...I stayed in his hometown of Depew, NY when I went to the Jets-Bills game in October...didn't see any Majkowskis around though. =(
i like all 2 of them but aaron rodgeers got more yards touchdowns less interceptions then favre did this year i love favre but he did better then him this year
Powerful stuff from Sterling Sharpe around the 5:50 area - when he says that if Majkowski had been able to stay healthy,we might not have ever heard of Brett Favre. Just thinking about the enormity of that statement...to think that the huge public entity we've known for the past 16 years wouldn't have ever existed is just- chilling. That's life though. The course of our lives is guided by fate.
Without Wolf, Holmgren, and Mariucci, who knows how Favre would have developed elsewhere? He was going nowhere in Atlanta... who knows if he'd have kept that course if he hadn't been traded.
@dhmachine31 Considering the fact that concussions were beginning to catch up to Falcon starter Chris Miller at that point, maybe Favre would have had to take over there.
@Market42Fan if you remember the only reason the falcons traded favre is because they wanted him out. he was a screw up in Atlanta. if the packers didnt trade for him, he probly would have been released, and then who knows.
Majkowski no Doubt, But he had one good year and the rest were crap due to injuries. The Best in QB in Packer history? No Way...Mr.Favre has that Title and I dont think it will be touched with any of the QBS we have right now on the Roster!
I was dissapointed they didnt make the playoffs in 89. They beat San Francisco that year, and had a legit shot at the Bowl. I wish Majkowski received another chance at starting for another team. He played well for the Colts, and surely was better than Scott Mitchell in Detroit.
Damn...I can't stop watching this damn video. I wish there was a 6th seed in the 1989 playoffs...this team was too damn good that year to NOT make the playoffs...
Must be extra strange for you not seeing Favre on the field then. Thanks for adding some perspective to this. Part of the reason this was uploaded was for those like you who missed out.
Eh...I'm a Jet fan, but Favre is one of my heroes, so I'm still seeing him on the field...don't worry! =)
The reason I started to become aware of Don was when I would play Madden 92 as the Packers and was curious as to who #7 was. Then I became interested in GB's 1989 season where they randomly went 10-6 and their QB led the NFC in passing. That's how I've come to love Mr. Majik...I really need a jersey or something to commemorate him.

My first favourite QB.
I spent hours trying to copy the move with the ball at 0:27 seconds. LOL
My fantasy team pays reference to him even after all these years.

Majkowski is a horrendously sad story.
Aside from his 1989 season, he was nothing.
Never had more TDs than INTs, never a winning record beyond 1989.
The greatest one season wonder of all time.
