  • peter griffin works on cars!

  • @sweetsanctum480 When he is not animated.

  • yo page 360 dolares por ese trabajo. GRACIAS por compartir tu sabiduria.

  • should I replace both tie rod ends at the same time if only one is bad?

  • @machinemachine70 I would check the other one if it is ok leave it alone.

  • You are my hero, dude. I just spent $310 getting a new wheel bearing/hub assembly put on my saturn, and the mechanic let me know that my outer tie rod end is also bad. I think I'll pay rent this month and do THIS job myself, lol.

  • @CaliforniaCarpenter7 I'm sure you can do it.

  • Hi Rich - I ordered two Moog tie rod ends, same exact part#, and one came with a removable dust boot, and the other one had a fixed dust boot (both greasable with Zerks). Which one do you think is better, the non-removable one?

  • @Amopower When i buy a tie rod end with one of those boots that are removable i bring it back.

  • @richpin06a thanks, I had already asked Amazon for a replacement a few days ago, hoping I would get the non-removable one, but with my luck I'll get the other one. Not sure how the exact same part# could be different like that, but when you shop online your only option is to ask for a replacement and hope it's the one you want.

  • hello Rich how could i remove the nut with a ratchet? it keeps spinning and not letting me take the nut off... thanks

  • @cupnoodles2 If you are talking about the jam nut you can use a flare or pipe wrench.

  • @cupnoodles2 you can use a vice grip and hold the top of the tie rod bolt and use a box wrench for the nut.

  • Outstanding Video it will help greatly on my Ford Explorer !!! Thanks

  • is it safe to do this at home then drive it to the shop to have an alignment done?

  • every body loves Raymond lol.

  • every body loves Raymond lol.

  • Rich you are the man! Pretty much every time that I have had a problem with my Saturn you have had a video on how to fix it. I thank you very much for saving me lots of money. I really appreciate your videos!

  • @jamescanflip thank you

  • How do you know if the tie rod end is bad?

  • @campauchicken Most of the time you can feel the play by moving the tire back and forth with your hands.

  • Would you torque it down by hand or with an impact on a 99 F250 Super Duty? I think the person before me over torqued it because it's not turning on the pitman correctly. Your help is greatly appreciated.

  • @stlouissux9119 I use my impact with 60 psi at the regulator then finish it off by hand.

  • You, Sir, are my automotive saviour. You've saved my bacon 3 times now!

    Thanks!

  • Great! Finally somebody who made it simple. My mechanic wanted $180 to do this. Thanks!!!

  • Will your vehicle require an alignment once this job is performed?

  • @bobmortock To get it perfectly aligned it will.

  • EARTH WIND AND FIRE! You are very good at what you do, sir.

  • Nice job.

  • Very helpful. If you are replacing inner and outer tie rods what is the best measurement to use in order to maintain the correct length?

  • @alcobaseta Center of the outer tie rd to the flange of the inner were it mounts against the rack.

  • thank you man!

  • i call bs on this, thoes nuts came off WAY to easy

  • @SrtRacerBoy yeah but I think he's just doing it to show the steps. I had to loan a puller from autozone

  • thanks for posting this my 2005 pontiac gto failed safety cus of a loose outside tie rod gives a idea of how to do it. just not sure i want to tackle something like this,

  • a dodge neon are the same i need to both sides of my son car ??

  • When doing the outer, how much extra work is it to replace the boot? Mine is torn and ready for replacement. Thanks for this video, tools and parts is much less than half of what the shop wants for this job.

  • @amillion3 I presume you are talking about the steering box boot which is not that bad of a job to replace.

  • very easy to do as per your video, thank you!

  • if u do one side do u have to do the other side too?

  • @theonenonly37 only if it is worn out

  • Is it ok to change the Tie rod ends before getting an allignment or will it mess the tie rod ends up again if i do one before the other?

  • @JClaiborne21 It would be best if you changed the tie rods then go get your alignment.

  • quiet louis....men are talking!

  • Will a crescent/monkey wrench work for the 22mm jam nut? 18-19mm is as high as I go. I don't recall seeing a 22mm wrench at the Craftsman store, but will check tomorrow. Where did you get yours?

  • @mjoekingz28 Yes you can use a crescent but be careful so you do not round off the nut.I do not know were i got my wrench but if you want one like it look up (DIN 895)

  • Richpin, what car are you getting next? I want a car that you'll be making videos for! :)

  • @RichSPK I like the Scion xA

  • A alignment should put it back the way it was.

  • Changed the tie rod and control arm on my 97 saturn at same time but now steering wheel is turned somewhat towards the driver side when going straight (that's the side the parts were replaced on). Is this just an alignment issue or maybe something else?

  • @Joehohleriii Alignment will fix that.

  • great video richpin, thanks

  • looks wicked haad....

  • @rick9565 You making a little jab at my accent ...i can take it.....lol

  • @richpin06a boston all the way baby lol

  • Not a bad video BUT you keep talking about ways to try to put the new one on without screwing up the alignment. Face it you're going to have to get an alignment after replacing the tie rods.

  • Thanks man! Been trying to figure out how to do this for the longest since the auto shop wants to charge me 175 bucks for this easy ass procedure.

  • thanks very much for the video. should help as i have to remove mine so i can get the alternator out of a ford mondeo

  • Dude thanks. I had no idea that was a jam nut. I snapped a solid pair of vice grips trying to tighten the jam nut when I thought I was loosening it. Now I can at least finish the job.

  • i would hit the top since your replacing it anyway

  • Thanks. I had to change my tie rod on my 05 CTS-V... this video really helped me. the old one broke while I was backing out of my driveway!

  • @IR0NMAN69 Wow you were lucky it broke while backing out the driveway

  • @IR0NMAN69 yeah really mine broke while turning the corner onto a busy street. left me sitting dead in my tracks til the tow truck showed up

  • @MrSlasher80

A trying wrenches, PBBlaster, and heat, I just took a sawzall with a metal cutting blade to it. Game over. One of my tie rods was pretty seized up and took a plumbers wrench wedge against the axle to hold the inner tie rod steady. I had to chase it on down using the hex nut at the top. The other came off nicely. Lesson learned for rookies at this: have heat source ready, a variety of tools, and eat a big breakfast because your gonna need it!

  • Thanks so much! The tie rod end on my 02 Impala was so corroded and covered in gunk that I didn't even realize it had a jam nut until watching this video. You're a life saver!

  • @DJKJSeph me too, but I have a 2000 model. 138k miles and finally failed inspection due to tie rods. How'd it go for you? I'm mid way through. Getting the nut off the bottom of the tie rod where it connects to the wheel is a MAJOR pain. The screw keeps spinning as I spin the nut.... and its so close to the end!

  • @smithns2 When this happens to me I would use a long pry bar and find a spot on the frame of the vehicle to stick the bar into. Pry down onto the tie rod. When doing this try to press the tie rod and the steering knuckle back together, the pressure stops the screw from turning. Or just use an open ended wrench on the nut and a vise grip on the screw shaft.

    These should do the trick!

  • Great video! I need to remove the tie rod on my 00 vette, it basically looks the same. Thanks!

  • r u serious? its this easy...and, im paying mechanic joe blow when i dont need 2! cant wait to see, any videos for the 98 and transmission output seals replacement

  • Very informative. I have a bad tie rod end in a 2005 chevy malibu that I must replace. Thanks for vid!!

  • lol I used to have a Saturn just like that. Same color, too.

  • Thanks!!

  • awesome video!

  • Whats the next best thing to use if you don't have a Babbitt hammer? I tried a normal hammer but that nut isn't going anywhere.

  • I have on a rare occasion used heat on that jam nut to loosen it.

  • thanks, i was able to get it loose with a pipe wrench. Do i need to grease the new end with a grease gun?

  • @mgza2007 if the replacement has a fitting i would but a couple pumps of grease in there.

  • oh shit, heat

  • great video helped me alot

  • when i try to do this on a 1993 Honda Civic LX, my outer tie rod turns with the inner tie rod as I try to get it lose... is there any way to overcome this problem. Theres no jam nut...

  • you may have what is called a tie-rod ajusting sleeve, there should be a clamp type object with two bolts holding the inner to the outer, but ive never seen a honda like that. the last peron who serived that part didnt put the jam nut back, I Think! Spray it with PB Blaster and let it sit overnight and use a vise grip to turn the tie-rod and a wrench to hold the inner tie-rod from turning, or two wrenches it the tie-rod end has flats

  • great video, lots of info and clear view, 5 stars

  • Good video as usual!

You make it look easy. Thanks

  • ur ar fuckin awesome! village experts suck ass! thanx man and nice music. reminds me of workin on my car on a nice saturday. no wife or kids, just me my beer and my car!

  • Thank you Rich, I have a 1996 SL2 that I have been doing all my own repairs on since I discovered all of your great instructional videos.

  • lol. Last week I mentioned the lack of a RichPin vid on the outter ends and this week The Man, The Master, The legend posts the vid. As always great work.

  • my question: how do you know when you need to replace the outer tie-rod end?

  • One way to determine if you need new tie rod ends is when the car is off of the ground, grab the bottom of the tire and move it or shake it back and forth, if you feel any play or slop, it's time to replace the tie rod ends, if the wheel and tire feel tight and there is no play, you're probably ok

  • On a 99 SW2, they were replaced at 70k, but the replacements actually had grease fittings on them. Remember that when lookin for a replacement. Car now has 115k miles I believe, runs strong and uses oil all day long!

  • A lot easier job than I thought. Thanks!!

  • Another great video clearly and wonderfully shown. What a great teacher. I have enjoyed and learned from each one of your videos. :)

  • With careful marking of the original positions - let's say +/- and 1/8th of a turn - how close can you get to re-assembling the tie rod to acceptable alignment? Or it there more involved in having a good alignment....

    RL

  • Don't forget the wheel alignment after....

  • toe only needs adjustment....

  • I thought the whole point of being careful to line everything up and putting the new one on the same amount of turns was to prevent needing an alignment.

  • it wil be off, but not to much....
