Hi, I'm doing a double sided knit with a slip stitch and I need to switch colours. the pattern has 56 cast on stitches and is K1, slip one purlwise with yarn in front. Would I basically do the same thing as shown in the video but start with a knit stitch? Is there any problems with slipping stitches when switching colours?
Thank you for posting this. It reallt helped. I am making a bunch of stripes scarves for Christmas gifts; they were turning out all lumnpy and bumpy. Your technique made them perfect.
That really helped.. I'm making my first scarf and I wanted to make it striped, but I had no idea how! You made it really easy and straightforward. Thanks!
Changing color with a rib stitch, to me, makes it look messy because you see the new color under the old. I would almost do one row of straight knitting just to make a cleaner color change.
how do you "carry" your yarn with the project? i want to do a thin stripe and a thick stripe, but i don't know how to keep my thin color with my thick color til i'm ready to use it. do i just cut it off and start over?
I have a problem, whenever I'm knitting ( with for example two by two ribbings) and I change the color, the pattern reverses! So my knits become purls and my purls become knits. I don't understand how to prevent this (yeah, I'm a slow learner, sorry). Could you please help me?
so if your done with the blue or the color ur using, and u want to add the pink bak in do u just start with it again? if u do that wouldnt they show on the side?
your video really helped me because you actually explained everything as if you were teaching a noob knitter, and used two different colors of bulky yarn so it was very easy to see what you were doing. this really helped me add a new color to the baby blanket i'm making. thanks! =)
my only problem is, the loop that you used in the new colour stays on the needle? meaning that I need to drop a stitch to keep it even? it made my scarf look a little messy, are you doing something that I'm not?!
@yellowxeyedxwolf If you knit (or purl) the new yarn in like I did, when you come to the place where you have added the new yarn you will see 2 stitches instead of one, you just knit (or purl) those stitches together. You just need to treat it like one stitch.
@caseyjz1 - actually, in order to make a striped scarf, you just need to use a multicolored yarn. The stripes will happen while knitting. It has for me anyway.
Thank you so much! This was very helpful, and you explained it and showed what to do very well. I also appreciate you describing how to weave the tails in!
@12345iheartvampires it looks like a super bulky yarn, I use Lion's Pride Wool Ease: Thick and Quick a lot you need a pair of 13 or even 15 needles which is what it looks like she's using here.
I made a multicolored scarf this year but it was all garter. I want to make a nicer scarf for a friend, and I think I got the hang of 2x2 ribbing, but I'm wondering...how is this going to affect the casting off step? Do you just cast off like you would garter?
@SaintDharma32 Good timing on your reply. I'm ready to c/o today! I tried it on a small test piece and doing all as though garter seems like the best bet for me...
This is EXACTLY what I needed to see. I am ribbing my first 2 x 2 rib-stitch scarf and I ran out of yarn and freaked out. I'm SO new at this, and I LOVE your video. Easy to see, easy speed - THANK YOU.
Very helpful. We are working on our first two-color scarf and needed a little direction on changing colors. Your video was an awesome resource. Thanks again! :)
how do you keep track of what side is the right side? I tried this,,,knit 2, pearl 2 and always get confused! I thought about putting a sticker on one side to mark it?
Is there any way to eliminate the weird stripe of dark against light when you change color? It looks a lot like needle work and its not exactly pretty... Could anyone plz help? im a little bit of a beginner :P
i'm so glad somebody asked this question. i've been working on a scar for months but can't finish because i hate the weird look of the line thingy when you add a color. I need help too.
I am a beginner at knitting and I'm working on a huuuuuuge scarf that changes colors many, many, many times. So THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOO much for this clear tutorial ^^
I have found this video *very* helpful! Thank you.
Not only are your instructions clear and detailed, but I **really** appreciate the thick yarn in contrasting colors. This makes it easy to see exactly what you're doing.
How do you change back to the original color when the working end of the original color isn't where it should be anymore? (Bear with me I'm a beginner) :)
If you are doing color work on something that has a right and wrong side (like a hat) you can just pick up the yarn and carry it over to where you need it. Make sure you do not pull tight on it or you will have a pucker in that area of your knitting. You can also cut the yarn leaving about 6 inches to weave in and pick up the color you need and start again like I showed in my video.
I have always just tied the new yarn to the old yarn and burn it so it stays together and just kept knitting... Should I not do it that way?

How do you change colour just for the ribbed bit, then back to the orginal colour and back to the other colour for the next ribbed bit?

how much of the original yarn should be left when you change to a new ball (i'm using the same color)?
aFlyingFox 3 years ago
Most people leave about a 6 inch tail. When you go to weave (sew) that in you wont use all 6 inches, but it give you enough for reassurance.
