I agree with GeorgeW6 - I'd hoped for an exposition of Google's human rights betrayal, but what starts out as promising devolves into: copy read woodenly by bored students at drastically attenuated volume, then segments that promise to show "search results" comparisons, but cut to audio/video documentaries that have nothing to do with net searches.

Great post. I wish more people realized the lack of freedom some nations, including China, offer it's citizens. They are not even allowed to be a Christian without fear of imprisonment or death. The "state churches" are only allowed for visitors to think China is free regarding religion, but they are clearly not. No it isn't. Dictatorship, if you want an example, look at China, or ally North Korea, the government jails people who seek freedom of speech. No one says the internet is 'by default freedom of speech', but we are arguing (peacefully) that freedom of speech should be a human right. People should never be afraid of their governments- governments should be afraid of their people. As soon as enough people realise this, the dictators will have a lot to answer to.

I never said anything about the laws of nature. I mentioned the UN declaration of human rights. And that is within the context of this discussion and the theme of the clip, which is Google and freedom of speech. The UNDHR is a set of rights that can apply to all human beings without taking away rights from any other. Googles motto is Don't be Evil. I consider helping to suppress other peoples rights to be evil.
I don't know much about the UNDHR, is it like the Geneva convention? Did China agree to it's terms? If not thenit's still just a bunch of people saying "these are the human rights and everyone must follow them and they are intrinsically true" without any scientific evidence to back up their claims (not that scientific evidence can be applied to morals anyway, that's why people still debate them)

No. It's because I was born in Brazil, a country that lived under military dictatorship for 20+ years.
I wasn't born at that time, but many students, journalists, dissidents of the government had been tortured and killed merely for disagreeing with it. Even musicians had to run away from Brazil, their songs were always censored here.
There was no internet, and if there was, it would obviously be censored. We weren't silenced, though. Now that time is just a bad memory.

Google is a company. It makes money. It can´t make money in China, if it rejects the Chinese demands for censorship. Therefore, it allows censorship. It is not Google´s responsibility to bring freedom of speech to China.
If Google doesn´t censor its contents in China, it will very likely get banned over there, costing Google a fortune. Because Google is a business set to make profit, it naturally follows the easiest way to gain that profit. It is up to other organizations to first break the communist dictatorship before Google can end the censorship of its contents in China.

The US is the only country in the world that still offers freedom of speech and this is because of the constitution and their founding fathers. I agree with GeorgeW6 - I'd hoped for an exposition of Google's human rights betrayal, but what starts out as promising devolves into: copy read woodenly by bored students at drastically attenuated volume, then segments that promise to show "search results" comparisons, but cut to audio/video documentaries that have nothing to do with net searches.
This is worthwhile, but someone needs to hire a competent video producer to turn it into something coherent. Disappointing.

Great post. I wish more people realized the lack of freedom some nations, including China, offer it's citizens. They are not even allowed to be a Christian without fear of imprisonment or death. The "state churches" are only allowed for visitors to think China is free regarding religion, but they are clearly not. No it isn't. Dictatorship, if you want an example, look at China, or ally North Korea, the government jails people who seek freedom of speech. No one says the internet is 'by default freedom of speech', but we are arguing (peacefully) that freedom of speech should be a human right. People should never be afraid of their governments- governments should be afraid of their people. As soon as enough people realise this, the dictators will have a lot to answer to.

Freedom of expression is considered a human right in the UN declaration of human rights. This declaration does not acknowledge any limits to which humans these rights are given. China is a member of the UN, and by denying their citizens these rights, we are in our full right to put judgment on them. Freedom of speech is not an object of personal belief.

I never said anything about the laws of nature. I mentioned the UN declaration of human rights. And that is within the context of this discussion and the theme of the clip, which is Google and freedom of speech. The UNDHR is a set of rights that can apply to all human beings without taking away rights from any other. Googles motto is Don't be Evil. I consider helping to suppress other peoples rights to be evil.

No. It's because I was born in Brazil, a country that lived under military dictatorship for 20+ years.
I wasn't born at that time, but many students, journalists, dissidents of the government had been tortured and killed merely for disagreeing with it. Even musicians had to run away from Brazil, their songs were always censored here.
There was no internet, and if there was, it would obviously be censored. We weren't silenced, though. Now that time is just a bad memory.

From what I've heard from Chinese students here in England, life in China is pretty good, so it seems that the Chinese government is probably acting in the best interests of the people and believe that censorship is necessary for that goal

It is not Google's responsibility to fight political wars with sovereign nation's with established laws. they are, and have to right to be a business first and moral arbiter second (if at all). to my mind it would be a losing battle for Google to oppose chinese law and deprive the chinese public of their great services- whether edited in accordance with local law or not
the chinese are a billion ppl ruled by a couple thousand if they were so deprived of great search results then let them revolt.

On China Google had a choice between not providing a service at all, or complying with Chinese authorities requirements. A question of the lesser of two evils.
Arguably Google's presence (albeit limited) in china will act to increase internal pressure on Chinese authorities to liberalize access to information, which is the principled (as opposed to business) counter argument.
Google themselves also have rights in the matter in freedom of expression and self determination.

1] Close your YouTube account and delete all the content
2] Close your Gmail account
3] Remove links to any search engines which censor anything, anywhere
4] Stop buying any Chinese product, ever
5] Delete Google Earth and Picassa
6] Delete any Microsoft software on your computer
7] Refuse to buy any product ever advertised on Google or YouTube
8] Join the fucking Amish

It's capitalism god damnit. Of COURSE Google. It's an enterprise which's sole purpose is making profit. It's not a communist company just because it chose to not lose an huge part of the market and chose to operate in China.

This video is so stupid. Googles choice is "block all of china" (cutting off 1 billion people from ANY outside info), or filter it according to China's rules. Something is FAR better then nothing. Google is trying to fix false flagging/false dmca's. But lets face it, most DMCA's are actually real claims, things like people posting tv shows. Youtube/google is doing the best it can. They are trying their best. Get over it.
