Careful, there are about a dozen variations of "Thalassemia" -- alpha, beta, delta and variants thereof. Don't assume that someone on the internet talking about Thalassemia has the same as you or your loved one
I feel so confused. I am 19 years old and I've just been diagnosed with thalassemia trait, but what does it all meant? The doctor just told me that everything was fine? Will it cause life-threatening complications in the future for me?
@Graymoths You would be having Thalassemia Minor trait and thats probably because one of your parents is also having Thala Minor, and hence it is passed on to your Genes.
T. Minor is not life threatening... It because a matter of concern when you have your life partner also with T. Minor trait and if you have kids together... there are 25% chances your kid will be a T. Major and thats life threatening. (Most likely child will be T. Minor, but 25% that it will have T. Major traits)
So it is advisable to know whether your partner is also T. Minor or not. If yes, you can still go ahead with family planning but get the pregnancy checked in initial stage to find will the child be suffering from T. Major or not.
So, you are safe but just make sure you get your partner checked for Thalassemia to avoid any complications with family planning.
Hope this helps, feel free for any concerns. Thanks
@thatsjigar Thank you so much for that valueble piece of info. :D I am glad there's no complications for me, and I really don't intend to start my own family and have kids, lol. Not at this point, anyways.
My dad is diagnosed with it too, while my mom is not. I have two other sibilings, do you think they will carry the trait aswell? Because they are planning to start their own families, and my concern is that they are not aware of this. Thanks again!
@Graymoths : I would suggest even your siblings and their spouses should get diagnosed for Thala. Its never late. But it better to know for the couple.
I have thalassemia major but it didnt stop my life it s perfect just like a normal person as well as that i think i'm really lucky becaue it makes me special
to every one who have thalassema dont let it control u, u control it =)
Mine does but it's not that horribly bad. What they're most worried about is how my wbc/rbc's ratio is. The weird thing is when my rbc's are low my wbc's turn up very high with no signs of infection of a virus or bacteria. When my rbc's are normal to high my wbc's are low. They can't explain it but when they wbc's are high they are pretty worried to say the least. It can get up into the 20 thousands.
I have thalassemia minor and I don't need blood transfusions but yea I do have signs. I really don't want to eat much, I'm tired all the time, cold all the time, and pale. Kind of like regular anemia only thing is......you give someone with this iron and they begin iron overload and get sick. We have enough Iron.
I've had also 2 marriages and I got both of them tested before I married them...I didn't want them to have it too incase we had kids.
HM3Johnsgirl: Sorry to hear that ur minor but don't worry being a minor is not a big deal. I'm minor too. It usually doesn't require any medical treatment. Great actor Amitabh Bachan, Tennis player Pete Sampras, Formal French Soccer Captain Zinadin Zeadan are also minors but it didn't stop them from becoming the best and it will not stop you too.
good video-- it should help make people aware of thalassemia and on prevention steps also on how to avoid. i had an 11 year old daughter who died of this condition -- "kiran ashfaq"
