Thanks for the video! I saw another one that showed them prying it up, but it was a lot better to have someone explain it all. Just a drop of soda in there gunks it up, so I was able to get the key up and swab the rubber thing with a q-tip. Great video!
Please!! I have a MACbook Pro... it's a few years old, 15 inch my left 'shift' doesn't work. and I have copy and paste the 'Z' cos the button won't work AT ALL! I can't really afford to go and have the Apple store fix it for me and I am terrified at doing it myself because I don't want to make any more problems for this computer than I already have, do you know of anyway I can fix this or do I have to replace the whole keyboard, if you need I can tell you what model I have it's A1226 I believe.
um like just a few bottoms work in a laptop i have like i can type q an d j and k but the number 0 nd 1 dont work nor any of my other keys wat do i do
@millersayshihowboutu That's a checkbox in System Preferences. Open the Keyboard section, and make sure Keyboard is highlighted, not Keyboard Shortcuts. You should see a checkbox that says "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys". Uncheck that box.

My key has broken (the micro plastic forceps that grabs the under X) by simply CLEANING with a soft cloth!!! I wouldn't risk my good keys too by pulling them by hand if I have a good tool to do that. BUT, if I haven't, I would risk by sure - with a goog cold beer to stabilize the hand. hehe
@tobarthedairyman1 The shift key is similar to the space bar, you can watch that video of mine. I have not had a chance to record a new video, or I would have posted the shift key video already.
@klyspeez Well, I do it this way because I had a lot of them to do, and I wanted to be sure they kept working. If you just pull them off and snap them back on, the little tabs on the back of the keys, and the supporting brackets take a lot of undesirable impact. After some number of times, maybe the first, some tiny piece of plastic will break and the key will either sit funny or not clip on at all anymore. Also, the smaller tool is easier to see what I'm doing in the video.
Stop being a pussy. Be a man and pull the keys out with your fingers, then to put it back it just press it down firmly. Geeze, its taking the keys off of a macbook, not open heart surgery.
Do you know how to do that on a 15" macbook pro, latest generation? I spilled a drink over it and now I, O, 8, U don't work properly anymore. I mean they are functioning, but are kinda stuck and it's very uncomfortable to use them. Besides hitting my head cause of my stupidity(jk) I don't know what to do. I'd like to clean them if that's even possible. Any advice?
@hanspeterpitsch The setup is almost the same. The brackets behind the keys might be rotated 90 degrees from what you see in my video. I have a friend with a 13" MacBook Pro. I'll take a look at his keys, and if they are very different, I'll video them as well. I know they are mostly the same, so my video should be a good frame of reference. Once you get it apart, use q-tips and a single drop of rubbing alcohol, and make sure the computer is off.
@existenceisfutile84 Hey thanks for the response. I'm really nervous when I think about how I could break one of them. Is the chance of breaking them big? Also, to clean them, would it require taking more apart than you did in the video or would the key itself be enough? Thanks for you help!
@kowatsh A video I just made about the "enter" key is uploading right now. Look for it in a half hour or so (my internet is slow). It's not anywhere near as tricky as the spacebar, and only a little more challenging than the key in this video.
does anyone know if you can replace the macbook unibody(silver) keyboard with the backlit key board from the pro 13'? mine isnt the pro and i want the back lit keys
@hamiltonboy08 You can't just replace the keyboard. Someone has a Flickr se showing how he did that. He used the light sheet from under a MacBook air keyboard, and the black keys from it. Taking apart the top case on the white MacBook to get the keyboard is NOT recommended. After that, he wired the light sheet to the MacBooks fan, and hid a button inside the computer along the left side, so squeezing the MacBook case at that spot turned on the keyboard backlight.
@hamiltonboy08 oh ok because i have the unibody silver model and i dont have backlit keys and i really want them lol i havent seen anyone post anything about customizing this mac. i guess u cant. oh well..
Recently I've got a problem with my Mac Pro keyboard. A single key opens up once I press it during my typing. I can close it with click back, but yet it opens again later. It doesn't seem damaged or something. Is there a way I can fix this on my own?
@filoboyz The pice you are talking about is called the "bottom case." It's what everything else is attached to. To replace it, you would have to remove every piece from your computer, and put it all back together again on a new bottom case. Might be worth checking out the Incase or Speck hardshell cases. I prefer the Incase ones. Good luck.
Right, I got that. I am not referring to the layout that existenceisfutile84 did. Perhaps he just did for the video purpose, perhaps he likes that way. I have no problem with any customization.
What I dislike is that Apple made changes to the design of the keyboard that makes it too odorless, tastless, soul-less... removing the slanted edges of the keys was a no-no, but I reckon that there are few folks out there that will like it.
@Ritchie37 I did see someone who installed the backlighting panel onto a white MacBook. I harvested one of those panels, but haven't gotten around to trying it yet. I will post it if. I ever get around to it.
@NeonProductionz go to the apple store they will fix it if its under warranty. i once got something sticky under my key and took the key off to fix it then couldnt get the key back on so i went to the apple store and they fixed it in literally 5 seconds
Dude you took your whole macbook apart just to change your powerbutton!?!? And I don't even like it. LOL I wonder if this works the same way with the Macbook unibody. Probably not with the newer macbook pro 13" because those key are a lot stiffer to the board.
Lifesaver video... My 1-y.o. daughter yanked the Caps Lock key out of place and it was a bitch to put back on. Realizing that the sequence was (1) plastic hinge then (2) key was, well key!

Thanks for the informative clip. This one is the most detailed I've seen yet. I accidentally spilled a mixed drink last night and need to see if I can clean the stickiness on about a dozen keys and get the backlight working on a few of them, but I have a later model MacBook Pro (mid 2009)
Hi, I've just bought a new mab book pro and I hate the black keys. Any advise on replacing all of them with silver ones. Need to know if there are any size/ key change issues and also where I can get them. Please help key master!
Does anybody know where I can get a FULL set of BLACK macbook keys? (I need the newer layout with the F7-F12 keys as the iTunes control and I need the plastic scissor clips to be horizontal) It is so hard to find those. There are tons of keyboards in ebay but they have the vertical plastic clips. I bought one and returned immediately. HELP!
The power button was hard. I had to take off the top case. That's the panel with the keys, trackpad, and power button. I had to use a thin metal tool called a spudger to pry the button out. I don't own that computer anymore or I'd make a video about it.
My sisters cat jumped up on the Keyboard, and one of her front nails got under the '5' key.
The Cat ripped the key up, and the right side of the key broke away from the holding mechnism, and i was left with a key half-attached.
This video helped me understand how to correctly put the key back in.
However, i also had to take off the plastic pieces, and re-attatch them. They came completly unhinged, and it took 2 attempts to sussefully attach in the correct order.

But all works.
