@keliata The film is not accurate, it is only a film, while very moving. While ''exhibiting himself'' he did not suffer horrendous torture, but was respected &made friends - for example. In my opinion, the worst parts of his life were after his mother died, his 4 years in the workhouse, and when he was abandoned in Belguim &had to make his way back to England. He was actually REFUSED passage on the first boat...If you want to really know about Joseph, read the excellent bio by Howell and Ford.

I only have one childhood fear - and that is The Elephant Man (John Merrick). I know it's silly because the film is a heart rendering and beautiful story, but it terrifies me to the point of tears!!

P.S. Not alot people actually don't know that John Merrick wasn't the victim depicted in this film - He was actually quite a shrewed business man place himself in the sideshow industry, charging a handsome sum to be seen and died a rather wealthy man!

Er, not quite, but you're half right. JOSEPH (yeah, everyone gets his name wrong, common mistake) did very much put himself in the sideshow business purposefully, accumulated about 50 pounds (a LOT at the time), but it was robbed from him by a manager who left him in Belgium. He traveled from there all the way back to London, quite destitute, at which point reality (mostly) returns to that stated in the movie at the train station.
