Yuo are great at soprano...it takes a certain type to play this insturment. you got it.. I lvoe this tune its a great tune but then again anything by Sammy Nestico is great.
holy crap! i just subscribed for sure. your tone, vibrato, and musical expression is superb. i myself play the tenor sax, but have really been wanting to try out the soprano sax.
Wow... You've got real talents on the soprano sax. I like your sound...but can i know how you produce that kind of sound with a little echo just like in the CD's? Did you edited the sound? If you don't mind, can i know where to find the sheet music for this song?
@hoppagidelim: "What I like in your playing is how you develop your musical ideas/feelings as a natural extension to the main theme, without any slightest tendency towards artificial show off of technics. Nowhere get I the feeling that you loose the musical feeling and try to fill somehowe the gap".
I agree. I just returned to this clip to listen again and I enjoy it more than the 1st time. Adding it to my favorites.
saxophones are classed as woodwind, not brass. Even if they are made of brass they are classed as woodwind like the clarinet and bassoon because of the reed making the vibrations to produce the sound.
Not going to lie, this video was a great pick-me-up. Your sound is impeccable. Definitely makes me want to keep going and finding "that one sound." Fantastic.
open up the back of your throat as if yawning when playing, make your bottom lip as soft as possible. Use classical reeds, or plain old rico royals, don't buy "jazz" reeds as these often have a bright and edgy sound. Buy a large chambered mouthpiece like an otto link HR, in a medium tip opening, 6 or 6* for soprano. Hope that helps!
@crazydaisydoo I've heard an analogy that you should position your jaw as if holding a golf ball between your molars. I guess that opens the back of the throat like you said. I've gotta get real reeds sometime, too. I've been playing Plasticovers for years.
What I like in your playing is how you develop your musical ideas/feelings as a natural extension to the main theme, without any slightest tendency towards artificial show off of technics. Nowhere get I the feeling that you loose the musical feeling and try to fill somehowe the gap.
In that sense you are my third favorite player beside Stan Getz and Paul Desmond.
Very high praise, not really deserved, but thanks :-) Truth is I can only play melodically as I don't have the skills to do anything else. That is one the problems with playing by ear! Thanks again- Matthew
I totally agree with you! Matthew has a fabulous sound, a fantastic ear and that genuine musical feeling that no one can buy or practice for. There are so many technical clowns out there playing bepop like John Coltrane missing out all the real qualities of sax music! That is my personal opinion.
Congratulations Matthew on another very fine example of your super music!
Thanks for the kind words, Desmond was a genius, so If I have 1/10000ths of his talent or sound then I would be happy. I like Getz, Pepper and Mulligan even more though. None of these played soprano, so this is an interesting experiment for me.
I guess I've always associated it with the likes of Kenny G. I've thoroughly enjoyed your playing. You've opened my ears and now I just have to have one lol.
Still listening to Fly Me and lovin' it! Don't know whether you have recorded Tangerine and Softly as in a Morning Sunrise - two more of my favorites to hear & play, but if not, pls post versions of both. I know they'll both be "Keepers"...
I can't stop listening to your wonderful tone on this tune. I've hit "Replay" 7x so far, so maybe I'll go off and practice - guess which Hal Leonard Fake Jazz Book tune will be attempted...
David, i took this "Jazz Standards" Hal Leonard book and cd with me on Holiday, along with my cheap soprano. It rained a lot, so boredom forced me to jam along with this, "Girl Talk" and "It Could Happen" It is a really good book, better than the aebersolds because the song length is shorter, and the backings more characterful. Tangerine and Softly as in a morning sunrise are excellent too. Volume 27, Great Jazz Standards, highly recommended!!
Thanks for posting this most beautiful rendition of a personal favorite for this jazz lover/"pocket trumpeter". I usually don't enjoy the sometimes shrill and grating sound of the sop. sax, but your playing was a gentle and, if I may say so, lovingly crafted creation. Keep 'em comin'!!!
Thanks you for the kind words, all the way from Mexico! I must say I too have no role models on soprano, it is not an instrument I have enjoyed listening to either really. I play it like a high alto sax or clarinet, rather than all that "smooth jazz" posturing and warbling, That is not denegrating smooth jazz, some of the players are superb, it is not just something I want to do :-)
I abhor "Smooth Jazz" and the Kenny G sort of crap which so many jazz-ignorant people think of as The Best Jazz Available. Cats like you are keeping the real thing alive and well, for those of us who can appreciate it.
This new sax has more substance, a more centered tone. You sound beautiful! And the musical qualities of this improvisation need not be pointed out anymore: high standard, inventive and fluent as hell!
Cheers Ulli, they are certainly worth a try, a little cheaper than a yani and less pretentious than the mauriats (only just) On the whole, a bit different from the crowd. I am not sure about my fluency, I still need to keep working on those changes.... don't we all!!!
Congratulations on the Cannonball. They really are excellent horns for the money. Sounds like you're adjusting to it nicely as well. If you can play a soprano in tune you've won 80% of the battle. You seem to have a good handle on that already.
The micing issue is indeed tricky. Too close to the bell and the lower register blows you away..too close to the upper stack and the upper register sounds shrill.
I don't have that problem. My cheap little mic makes it sound like crap regardless, so...
I was in the shop trying to decide, i was a bit unsure of the cannonball (only from a reputation point of view), and I thought of your lovely rendition of Round Midnight, and I thought "if it is good enough for cj....." I don't know why so many people are down on these horns?
I think that bad reputation comes from the earlier Cannonballs quite a few years ago. They did put out some inferior horns in their early days, but they've made quite a turnaround since then. When you get off to a bad start like that, it takes a while to live down the reputation.
Too true. I actually preferred a gerald albright model to my yamaha 62 alto when I first got it 18 months ago. I went home, did some research on SOTW and decided in favour of the Yamaha. I still regret it. Moral of this story, trust your own ears and judgement!!
Cheers! The sop is not the bad to play, moderns one have better intonation. I think you need a reasonable ear and then compensate. If you are the kind of the person who sings out of tune then it is always going o be a struggle (if you know what I mean) If you have OK pitch, then give it a shot! The tone is a tricky one though, they can sound like an oboe on steroids which is not really what I am after.....
Oboe indeed...~L~. My first experience on soprano was with the 2nd Infantry Division Band. I played the oboe parts in the symphonic band for almost a year...on soprano...because we had plenty of sax players but no oboe player. You would have had a hard time telling that it wasn't really an oboe without looking. It was a lot of fun, and great exercise for sight transposition. It did take a while to lose that oboe'ish sound though after spending a year deliberately trying to sound like one.
My bother played the oboe to a very high standard when I was a kid (he is 5 years older than me) it has a lovely tone, but I think they have huge reed problems. I was glad I got to play the flute instead. He stopped playing at 18, a real shame, but very common for orchestral players.
Thanks. It is really hard to record the soprano well, the sound comes from everywhere so ideally you need 2 microphones. It gets a little shrill in the upper register, but I just got away with it...
Thanks! I fluff a few bits, it is very much a first a first take, otherwise I go over and over the same bits and it sounds worse. Nice to hear from you, all the way from South Korea! now that is amazing...
