This just shows how ignorant liberals are. If you can't tell by McCain's tone of voice and the audience laughter that he was joking when he said "5 million" you are a very ignorant and stupid person.
Middle class cant be decided on income alone. As he said a person may bring in $110,000 a year. But what liberals dont bring out is that this person may have three kids no spouse and is paying for one child to go to collage. After all of these expenses are paid thats a big chunk of change, it cant be decided on net pay alone.
It's silly for anyone in a party to ascribe a level of intelligence, good or evil to anyone in the other party. His "health insurance tax credit" for the "health insurance of your choice" wouldn't cover most people's health insurance costs. Not even close, in fact.
I know. I do billing in my career, dealing with insurance companies and patients for optical exams and corrective lenses. Insurance companies fuck you over, and they have NO sympathy for people with lower incomes or in dire circumstances.
It's really easy to talk about health care costs when you never have to worry about it, like McCain.
Just because he was joking about the $5 Mil, doesn't mean you shouldn't listen to what he is saying. And if you think about it, many people who make over $200,000 a year are the middle class, sometimes they are barely getting by. Making $200,000 on paper does NOT mean $200,000 in hand, yet we are taxed on what we make on paper. so it makes no sense to pick a number and say "if you make more than this a year, you're rich."
anyway obama would lower taxes on the middle class and increase taxes for those who make over 200,000 a year. also he would make health care more affordable and stop coperations from profiting off the sick.
the fact is taxes are not bad, and if we didnt tax the wealthy or "rich" then we end up with the economy we have now. mccain can not even identify what "middle class" is.. so how can he help us? you guys talk about obama being a yuppie.. well he doesn't own seven houses and belong to a country club. i guess thats what mccain ment when he said, "the GOP changed my life."
I'm about as liberal as you can get & I am NOT a McCain fan by any means but he clearly laughs & says "but seriously...I'm sure that comment will be distorted" Look how right he was. It was a joke & even if you think it's not funny it stupid how it all got blown out of proportion. Everyone needs to get over it.
Everyone who watched this knows he said it in jest like Obama did when Obama said he defined rich as someone who sold 25 million books. YOu dont see media taking Obama's comment out of context and running with it yet they do McCain's. McCain luaghed afer saying it and then said, now seriously...
I'm not stupid enough to think Obama really thinks there's 57 states..or didn't know he was in Kansas City when he was in St. Louis during the Convention...but some are stupid enough to think McCain thinks someone making 5 Million dollars is middle class....even after he says "But Seriously...I bet that comment will be distorted"
But McCain said we should give every family a tax credit $7,000 for every child a family has. Where are we going to get that money from. Later, he said the problem we have now was overspending. This is contradictory with his petition of giving a tax break. What is the purpose of the tax break. Isn't the tax break is to boost the economy by encouraging spending. Finally, how does decrease tax rate increase(tax)revenue.
Out of touch would be promisses made you know you can't keep. He said he "wants" to give tax breaks to family's. Obama says he "will" give tax breaks. But he forgets congress. After all the promisses from the Democrats in 2006 you would think liberals would know better. "Troops home by June 07." "Plan to lower gas prices." "Huge tax break for the middle class." "Free healthcare for every American." His 5 millon was a joke. But Liberals are the real joke. And it's all above Obama's pay grade.
My friend lived many a day in the back seat of her parents car; ate bread from a dumpster; her father became an AC repair man; then an AC contractor: then bought a van; then another; for 30 years he worked hard; built up a business; employed 100 people; of which most grossed more pay then he. He sold the business 10 years ago, paid his taxes dearly on that sale; lives comfortable now; Why should this man pay more tax than ME? Why should anyone be penalized for success?
And the difference is, Firewoman1000, Obama joked about Pastor Warren's 25 million book sales, after which he ANSWERED the actual question with exact numbers from his tax plan! McCain joked and then bullshitted for 3 minutes about why he is so confused on the issue! Just like he's confused on immigration, his previous disapproval of Bush's tax cuts, the Iraq war, and every other position he's pandered too! GO OBAMA!!!
Ok. So the only answer John gives to the actual question is $5 million a year and then rambles for another three minutes? I'll bet he couldn't even remember the question by the end of his BULLSHIT! And we're taking poor Johnny out of context?! WHAT?!! He's OUT OF TOUCH!!
I hope McCain was being honest, because he sounded more .. like he was trying to answer the questions to what would please the audience.. like he was campaigning.. Obama seemed more to answer whole heartedly..
Ron Paul 2008, Obama and McCain are just to questionable
The dems, again, taking comment out of context - His answer was " I define rich as having a home, a good job, an education and ability to leave a heritage for our children." end of sentance. Now, Obama jokingly said his definition of rich was selling 25 million books ( a nod to Rick Warren) and liberal media didnt take his commment out of context as they did McCain's. The media's biased treatment is blatant.
A home: What is that? A one room apartment? A good job: What is that? Wouldn't that be defined differently by different people of different economic stature? An education: High school? College? Grad school? Military? What? Leave a heritage for "our" children: What the hell does that mean? Pass on great grandpa's diary? McCain's answer is a joke and a slap in the face to hard working middle and lower middle class people.
Yeah, I'm sure all of those Christians are millionaires. Get real people! Hope is not a plan! We need a leader not a dreamer! Don't drink the kool-aid! I've already found my savior. I'm looking for a president!
Interesting to watch Christians millionaires talk about money. "I don't want to talk about raising rich folks' taxes or redistributing wealth" - says the owner of eight or ten homes - "I want everyone to make lots of money", while the very wealthy preacher smiles approvingly. Was Jesus watching this or what?
What the hell are you talking about? McCain is not a preacher, and almost no preachers are "very wealthy", or even wealthy. The only exceptions are the megachurch preachers, like Joel Osteen, Benny Hinn (who is a known fraud and thief), and the Crouches. Then there are the very rare exceptions like George Foreman, who made their fortunes in business and then became preachers.
Incredible how the main stream media has distorted this comment. Thanks to the New York Times for an op-ed describing the comment as a joke and linking here...
MCAIN is so fucking lost in his dollars,,, HOW the fuck can he try to relate to every day folks wen he thinks the line between the middle class and rich is 5 million...
McShame talking about being rich is having a nice family good job etc. Talking about the riches people are unhappy. Then why did he cheat on his wife and leave his kids to run of with a rich woman? Hes such a two faced guy, he tells us one thing but he does something else himself.
Whats McLame talkign about there was too much spending when he wants to go to war in middle east for another 100 years. How much will that cost like a $trillion?
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a sharp turnaround, Republican John McCain has opened a 5-point lead on Democrat Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential race and is seen as a stronger manager of the economy, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.
McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama's solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll.
And this is in spite of Massive favorable coverage for Obama in the press. Way out of Proportion. The other day I was listening to NPR and they had a 45 second long thing about Obama's possible VP. And as an afterthought- Mccain might pick Leiberman.
Income tax brackets are based upon lifestyle. High taxes for the rich still enable them to have a happy lifestyle whereas low taxes for the poor enable to live as best a life as they can. My family is taxed over thirty percent in Canada but we live well. And if we earn less we'll be taxed less, enabling us to continue our lifestyle.
Interesting defense of the redistribution philosophy. But what you're really doing is lowering the lifestyle of the rich so it is closer to the lifestyle of the rest of us. The more equal the lifestyles, the less envy we will have for those who have more. Unfortunately nobody is improved, just reduced.
The lifestyles are not equal, so what you call "envy" will always be there regardless. I don't think it is motivated by envy, merely equality. Take a dollar away from a poor man he's not too happy with it. Take ten thousand from a rich man he isn't too happy either. But neither destroys their lifestyles or impacts them enough to place them in, or out of poverty.
Personally I'm ok with a progressive tax system for the simple reason that you can't get any tax revenue from people who don't have anything, but it blows my mind when people claim the rich don't pay their "fair share," should pay more, or don't deserve tax cuts. They're paying most of the taxes already for cripes sakes.
I forgot guilt. Those who are rich but argue for higher taxes on the rich are motivated by the guilt that they have it better than everyone else (e.g. Latte Liberals). So we have a progressive tax policy motivated by the twin forces of envy and guilt. Too bad our policies aren't motivated by more noble American virtues, such as personal responsibility, or admiration for the most accomplished among us, something to aspire to rather than envy.
To those who know American history (earlier than the 1960's), the U.S. and its culture popularized certain ideas and virtues that were virtually unknown prior to its time. The very term "American dream" encapsulated a rags-to-riches philosophy that completely redifined upward social and economic mobility in the world. So yes, there are virtues that can be described as noble and uniquely American, even if today's world doesn't remember where those virtues originally came from.
What you consider a virtue in your own life may be subjective, but the concept of "American virtue", just like "Greek virtue" or "Christian virtue" has objective meaning. If you prefer, add the word "traditional" in front.
Then it is still dependent on who's tradition you mean. To represent an entire nation, even the history of an entire nation, by a select few virtues is extremely arrogant. No country is a monolith, don't treat them as such.
The top 20% already pay 85% of the taxes in this country, while the bottom 50% pay less than 3% (the bottom 40% pay nothing). So I think the "rich" are paying their "fair share" (and then some).
It's a shame our tax system is so brutally unfair and punishes people for success. But that's what you get when you let envy and jealousy influence government policy.
America has created over 200 billionaires since Bush has taken office. At the same time, our deficit, unemployment rate, gas prices, and rate of inflation have all increased.
It's not about the other 19%, it's about the tippy-top.
Forgive me, but that sounds like a non sequitur. How are the 200 new billionaires related at all to our deficit, unemployment, etc.? Do you believe they are in some way responsible? That they exploited everyone else to get their $1B?
Keep in mind our economy is still growing, not shrinking, which means overall people and companies are making more money than they are losing. That would explain (to me anyway) why we have more billionaires, not less.
The only people who obsess about those who are "rich" are people who are consumed by envy or jealousy. Instead of thinking so much about the wealth of others, they might think more about how they can generate some wealth of their own.
It was our money and the old turd voted for it. He wants everyone to get rich. What a cynical out of touch shit. They have no bread? Then let them eat cake. You're having a hard time as a poor person? Then get rich but duping dipshits into believing you are doing God's will. Satan is laughing his ass off.
McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama's solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll
Reading these post really point to the level that our educational system has sunk. Rev. Wright was wrong in damning America, he should have been saying God help America. We need to focus more on reading and listening comprehension in our academic institutions. A mind is a terrible thing to waste. God help us in an election year that could have severe implications for this nation.
Oh btw if you want a hundred years of war in Iraq, vote McCain. McCain says he cares about fiscal responsibility, but he totally supports spending untold trillions in a war we dont need to fight. McCain is a corrupt, hypocrital, neo-con whore who will do or say anything to get in the white house so he can give tax breaks and money and contracts to his powerful friends. You think a rich old man like him gives a damn about your interests?
"I define rich as a good home, a good family and the ability to give our children a better future" are you fucking serious McCain? Yeah I bet its easy to say that when you have 10 luxious home on prime locations and ten million in the bank. Rich people dont need or deserve tax cuts. Because rich people dont work or make money...they use US to make their money for them. They just tell us what to do. Most rich people inherit their money to begin with.
With all due respect, we have become an entitlement society. Young people expect everything to be handed to them. As a nation we are becoming so soft. Who's fault is it that individuals didn't apply themselves in high school to go to college and prepare themselves for a prosperous life? Heck I don't know why the poor is whinning, they don't make enough money to worry about taxes.
That's socialism and taking from the rich and giving it to the poor has failed before. Look at welfare! That Robin Hood thinking will raise the cost of living for everyone! I own a small business: I make $250,000 a year, I have employees, their medical cost, supplies and the merchandise I buy to sell. I take home $50,0000 a year. According to Obama and you my taxes will go up! I'll have to cancel raises, raise health premiums, I'm going to have to lay people off and raise my prices. He won't win
That "$50,0000 a year" was the first sign of you being a bad lier. No further response is needed for your BS. If you were a real businessman you definitely would of not messed up your numbers "especially" about money. Please create another I.D. and try again loser.
McCain was right again.... he said, in advance, that people would distort his answer. I think that his predictive ability on this paints him in a very good light.
LOL !!!.. Obama thinks 50k is rich! He said he wants tax relief for 'families' making less than 75,000 per year. Husband makes 38k ....Wife makes 38k......Family makes 76k.....so according to Obama.... YOU"RE RICH IF YOU MAKE 76K PER YEAR !!
You have missed the point. The point is that he doesn't want to raise taxes. If you must have a number for rich, he JOKINGLY offers $5 mil. If you listen further, he makes a joke about how that comment will be distorted. Try to be honest....
the 5 million dollar rich number sounded quite like a joke to me. hence why he said it will get distorted later... just like the title of this video is doing.
One must understand that one cannot let the market lead the world because it means CAPITAL CONCENTRATION. One must understand that the state has to manage the economy to prevent this concentration. And to rech this goal one needs money and it means taxes.
When 'll you understand that we have much more interest in increasing the level of the all of us ( economicaly, socialy and affectively)
Tax credit is NOT handing out a check. Tax credit means that you subtract 7000 dollars from your taxable income, thereby lowering the tax you pay. McCain made it very clear that he wants to decrease government spending in order to make up for it.
And as far as the number goes, he also made it clear that he wants to lower taxes for everyone. He doesn't need to define 'rich'.
Yaaaaaay no more taxes for white conservative southern california! Everything is free! No one has to pay for anything! Everyone keep buying more crap!
They are so funny, they'll harp about how Obama will destroy the economy and waste money on things like health care or social programs yet spending hundreds of billions for absolutely no benefit to anyone - probably harm overall! is a good use? Only elite types whose only financial worry is whether they buy the 80 or 100 foot yacht think like that!
because he's predictabely stupid and out of touch with the common person. egardless they are all the same shit only slightly different. here to rule the biggest piece of shit country that has a fucked up house but worries abotu everyone elses.
How is this distorting it? It is just showing the video of what he said with no editing. Just because he looks bad for the things he says doesn't mean there is distortion, like "Nations don't attack other Nations in the 21st centurty." Nothing to distort there. Just hypocracy.
I agree with McCain 100%. IT WAS SPENDING. Let's see...trillions upon trillions spent on the illegal war in Iraq, which YOU mcCain supported. Now you want to stay in Iraq for another 50 years. How much is that going to costs American tax payers. How about the money we gave to other governments-Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Israel? Are you kidding me McCain? We're going to spend double the amount if you come into power.
McCain is a shameless hump. Cheating for the Tea Party.
McCain's handler and spokeswoman, Nicolle Wallace, admitted he wasn't in the 'cone of silence' but that he didn't cheat either.
The statement on it's own is an admission he cheated, as he had agreed TO be in the proverbial 'cone', instead he was in his limo where it was being broadcast 'live'. They swear he didn't listen though.
I remember him swearing he didn't cheat on his first wife either UNTIL he admitted that he did.
This is exactly why the dems are full of sh#t. Just like 100 years in iraq, another opportunistic soundbite to fool the lesser informed (Democratic)Voters.I mean he even said that the democratic media would take this joke and turn it on him..cnn, step on up.The real sound bite was Obama talking about all the questions he asked before voting on Iraq. HAHAHa.He didn't even know what a sunni was at that point in time.Wow he voted No to war.there's a real tough vote for some1 who wants to be prez!
Yeah, really absurd isn't it John, the money that is being wasted on studying the DNA of bears, glad you can have a laugh with your 'friends' about that. Now, how do you like to spend the nations money John? Any more 'overseas projects' planned should you become Pres??
What hypocrisy! This is a supposed "Christian" candidate and a supposed "Christian" pastor asking questions about faith. When asked about evil, McCain gave the EXACT OPPOSITE answer that Jesus Christ did in the Bible Matthew 5:39.
McCain wants everybody to be rich? Jesus said to the rich sell all you have a give it to the poor, and it's easier for a camel (rope) to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter Heaven.
"i want everybody to get rich" shut the fuck up McRage...
it's like saying "world peace" at a beauty pageant, it's such a bullshit answer.
or I don't want any "racism" in the world...

Finally, how does decrease tax rate increase(tax)revenue.
whyicare 3 years ago

Just like he's confused on immigration, his previous disapproval of Bush's tax cuts, the Iraq war, and every other position he's pandered too! GO OBAMA!!!

Sardonac 3 years ago
Interesting defense of the redistribution philosophy. But what you're really doing is lowering the lifestyle of the rich so it is closer to the lifestyle of the rest of us. The more equal the lifestyles, the less envy we will have for those who have more. Unfortunately nobody is improved, just reduced.
gsimonsays 3 years ago
The lifestyles are not equal, so what you call "envy" will always be there regardless. I don't think it is motivated by envy, merely equality. Take a dollar away from a poor man he's not too happy with it. Take ten thousand from a rich man he isn't too happy either. But neither destroys their lifestyles or impacts them enough to place them in, or out of poverty.
Sardonac 3 years ago
Personally I'm ok with a progressive tax system for the simple reason that you can't get any tax revenue from people who don't have anything, but it blows my mind when people claim the rich don't pay their "fair share," should pay more, or don't deserve tax cuts. They're paying most of the taxes already for cripes sakes.
gsimonsays 3 years ago
I forgot guilt. Those who are rich but argue for higher taxes on the rich are motivated by the guilt that they have it better than everyone else (e.g. Latte Liberals). So we have a progressive tax policy motivated by the twin forces of envy and guilt. Too bad our policies aren't motivated by more noble American virtues, such as personal responsibility, or admiration for the most accomplished among us, something to aspire to rather than envy.
gsimonsays 3 years ago
"Noble American Virtues" is an entirely subjective term, you shouldn't use it when defending a position.
Sardonac 3 years ago
To those who know American history (earlier than the 1960's), the U.S. and its culture popularized certain ideas and virtues that were virtually unknown prior to its time. The very term "American dream" encapsulated a rags-to-riches philosophy that completely redifined upward social and economic mobility in the world. So yes, there are virtues that can be described as noble and uniquely American, even if today's world doesn't remember where those virtues originally came from.
gsimonsays 3 years ago
Nobility is subjective, and the term American is subjective. What is considered a virtue is also subjective, there is no argument here.
Sardonac 3 years ago
What you consider a virtue in your own life may be subjective, but the concept of "American virtue", just like "Greek virtue" or "Christian virtue" has objective meaning. If you prefer, add the word "traditional" in front.
gsimonsays 3 years ago
Then it is still dependent on who's tradition you mean. To represent an entire nation, even the history of an entire nation, by a select few virtues is extremely arrogant. No country is a monolith, don't treat them as such.
Sardonac 3 years ago
The top 20% already pay 85% of the taxes in this country, while the bottom 50% pay less than 3% (the bottom 40% pay nothing). So I think the "rich" are paying their "fair share" (and then some).
It's a shame our tax system is so brutally unfair and punishes people for success. But that's what you get when you let envy and jealousy influence government policy.
gsimonsays 3 years ago
Yes, but you have to look at the top 1%.
America has created over 200 billionaires since Bush has taken office. At the same time, our deficit, unemployment rate, gas prices, and rate of inflation have all increased.
It's not about the other 19%, it's about the tippy-top.
HungLo6515 3 years ago 2
Forgive me, but that sounds like a non sequitur. How are the 200 new billionaires related at all to our deficit, unemployment, etc.? Do you believe they are in some way responsible? That they exploited everyone else to get their $1B?
Keep in mind our economy is still growing, not shrinking, which means overall people and companies are making more money than they are losing. That would explain (to me anyway) why we have more billionaires, not less.
gsimonsays 3 years ago
The only people who obsess about those who are "rich" are people who are consumed by envy or jealousy. Instead of thinking so much about the wealth of others, they might think more about how they can generate some wealth of their own.
gsimonsays 3 years ago
....ha ha haaaaaaaaah, ....but seriously folks

Because rich people dont work or make money...they use US to make their money for them. They just tell us what to do. Most rich people inherit their money to begin with.

With all due respect, we have become an entitlement society. Young people expect everything to be handed to them. As a nation we are becoming so soft.
