i think he is telling the truth. the screaming hasnt helped either. its a shame they didnt write more with the all the years they had. i wanted more of your soul maynard!!!
He's one of the only singers i've heard whose singing voice is completely incomparable with his speaking voice. He really reaches deep for his singing voice.
@SuburbanLemur Really? That's interesting because I found I didn't like him at all when he was with MTV, & this being the first time seeing him since, I discovered he's actually someone I could hang out with.
wow, is it just me, or is maynard getting NICER with age!? seriously, go back to interviews he did in the mid 90s and he looks about ready to kill the interviewer, kill the camera man, set fire to everything in his immediate vicinity and then turn over a busload of kids.
@SycoX17 i think youre right. ive noticed that too. maybe hes realized its ok to share things and be a bit friendly at times. i think that may come with age and maturity and the fact that hes a father. he has said that his son has "lightened him" and made him stronger. thus, putting down a guard.
Probably one of the most thought provoking interviews I've cared to subject myself to. Daily not only made a great choice of words in many realms of social configuration, he provided his own perspective to a man many have failed to stimulate in an interview situation and was not seemingly ashamed of his honesty and thoughts. Great interview; Daily fans and Maynard fans (mostly Maynard fans) have another solid piece of the puzzle we so frantically try to assemble and recognize as our own.
I think everyone looks too much into "what Maynard is about"....You have to remember he is a performer and will act as such (weird, quirky, evasive) on a simple interview because that is the image he created for the front man of Tool 20 + years ago. To act any different would be to undermine the image everyone thinks he should be. I guarantee he is an average person who really doesn't care too much for attention like other rock icons get sucked into.
How did this douche bag get an interview with Maynard?! I am so absolutely in love with this man and completely mesmerized by his voice!! Maynard is god.
Maynard is a goddamn pimp. The man is in a class all his own. Nothing and nobody can take that away from him. He earned it. Motherfucker should change his business card from Jesus H. Christ to Magnus Aurelius Rex. Whatever he chooses to put his hands in transmutes to gold with time. He's brilliant that way. Respect.
What can I say. The guy is pretentious and awkward as hell (at least on camera), has an obvious small man's complex, and is arguably, on the whole, an overrated musician that's generally worshipped by a cult of annoying douchebags with an elitest music mindset. That said, I do like his music.
I agree, people focus too much on him while they should just focus on the music... or try to uncover his philosophy through his lyrics, interviews and that kind of stuff... like I do.
@Maynard0504 "Shit, blood, and cum on my hands." "Fuck your God, your lord, your Christ." "My cuntry boner." "You must have been so high."
Let's not overrate his philosophy. It's essentially a collection of racy-sounding lyrics with paper thin metaphors about simple concepts that his die hard fans have trouble understanding so they seem deep.
Not that he's not a great vocalist, but I really wouldn't call his music or lyrics deep.
@CMazzucco Awkward, ok. Nerdy crackers be like that. When dude's into something, he learns all that he can absorb. That makes him pretentious?
Maynard stands taller than his physique with his own inner essence. That's a small man complex? He has a unique tenor and style that's his goddamn hallmark, but the man's an overrated POS, 'cause every dawg on the block can easily imitate him? Right. You trippin balls, B.
Tell me this, Yo? What have you done with your life? Go on, Nigga. Impress me.
@MosEisleyGangsta you think theyd air the word "FUCK" on a huge network channel? do you know how many millions that would cost them? cmon man, seriously. youve got to have more sense and brain cells than that.
Anyone who saw Tool tour (I was fortunate enough to see the amazing performance in Houston) this year, knows that Maynard's comment about his voice is complete bullshit. Silly Maynard.
His voice problems can occur from drinking, depending the amount of it btw. I think he's overreacting and it's normal that he's not as energetic as 10 years ago, but his age should not be a problem, because singers like Coverdale are still rocking the stage. The other option is that he is not anymore into singing as before, and wants to live a quiet life until some other idea comes up.
Well that's certainly possible, it might be psychological more than anything else. He just might not be into it anymore, or there could be days when he is into it and days when he's not.
@nerez It might also be the fact that the guy has been screaming quite a lot in some of the songs, and that stuff will come back to bite you in the ass if you don't use a proper technique!
I don't think he's overly critical on the singing. He still sounds great to me, but you'd have to be tone deaf to not hear the difference. In this instance I don't MJK isn't being too critical,he's just being realistic.
Haven´t heard any of the new APC shows, but if he´s saying the truth, it would make sense to me. I still listen to every Tool album and to me, it sounds like he really pushed as far as he can go - in a good versatile way, not stupidly "wrecking" his voice like some singers do. And if you try to reach your limit that way, maybe one day you´ll have reached it... but than again he´s only at the beginning of a career as winemaker... and it goes on and on... and I guess he enjoys that perfect circle.
Well there's something I notice. When I look at older videos of maynard singing live I noticed he was more physically fit then than he is now. I think that might have alot to do with it. He's always been a visceral singer and maybe when he stopped working out or whatever he lost that visceral edge.
didn't have high expectations from the interviewer, but he did it pretty well. Sucks that Maynard is losing his voice, but a good interview none the less! :)
oh wow... I feel nervous for that guy. I mean... Maynard's not just a regular rock star or whatever. He's odd, in a very good way. Like a legend or something
I hope MJK figures out a way to adjust to his aging voice. His midrange is still incredible. If I had 1/8 the voice he has currently I would be a happy man.
@LittleEmoBoy001 Despite Ozzy's voice sounding terrible now (in my eyes), MJKs voice contains(ed) more power than about any other modern rock singer. The only other ones I can think of are Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, and Freddy Mercury. However, Layne and Freddy are dead so they couldn't get to that point. And Chris...well... have you heard him?
Have you heard 67 year old david bowie lately? His voice is quite phenomenal still. I've heard some soundgarden songs but never got into them. A few of their songs are good.
You've obviously never listened to david bowie. The man can do operah if he so desired, and that requires alot of vocal discipline and longevity. Don't talk about things you don't know about. Fuck screaming, I'm talking about singing.
