good video im a youngster and looking to enter the field of work i've applied to the norfolk southern in sheffield alabama hope to be a conducter i would love some advise from guys who are still in the carreer thanks
Hate to see this kind of sentiment among railroaders.... As a rail fan, I'm sure I don't get the full perspective, by a long shot, but having a relative in the business, I admire and respect the ones that make railroading careers the best they can. I know its a tough field with a lot of negative issues, but believe me, its not much different than any other job in that respect. God bless the railroader and their families! Super Nice video , by the way.
these guys are probably scared to death about some official catching them breaking some ridiculous rule and getting them fired. happens all the time. I feel bad for em that they have to be filmed and looked at under a microscope ALL day.
where your wrong is the reason the rules exist. it is NOT to protect the general public, but to cover the company's ass if anything were to happen. i would guess theres about 2,000 rules to know to be JUST a conductor, more for an engineer. do you know 2,000 rules about anything combined? sports, your job, the law, anything combined? there are more FRA rules than there are FAA rules. That means you have to know more to be a railroader than to be a pilot of an effin airplane. hence microscope.
There's probably 2000 rules to know just to drive a car. Maybe that is taxing for you...but I've never had a problem.
So yes...I know 2000 rules about a subject. many in fact.
BTW...I'm a former conductor and engineer. I've been a road foreman, trainmaster, yardmaster and currently a supt. And...I have about 50 hours flying. Not much, but enough to know "a few" rules.
so you know 2000 rules about driving? try to write them on a piece of paper. ill bet you dont get over 100. if you dont think this crew is afraid for their jobs, then you havent been railroading in over 10 years, because it has changed ALOT over that time. as a CURRENT conductor, i can tell this FORMER yardmaster/trainmaster (which are 2 different names for the same job, unless you mean dispatcher) that you DONT know wtf you're talking about.
20 questions on a test does not mean there are not 100 times that in total rules.
No. Everyone is not in good spirits with good job security. Traffic is down. Truck competition is eating us. And losers like yourself make life miserable for everyone.
Generally I do not discipline directly. It's a huge terminal. But I discipline when needed.
I do wish I knew who you were. It would be fun to escort you off the property so you could go back to your trailer a whining unemployed ass.
my yardmaster in my terminal took the short bus to school, literally. you certainly dont need any degree over a high school diploma to manage, so you wasted alot of money. i wonder how you had time to go to school when you were on call 24/7? and its ppl like YOU who make everyone miserable. you have to be completely cold hearted and compassionless to do what u do. i really wish i knew who you were, so i could follow all your rules and take 6 hrs to make a 20 car pickup in your yard.
Actually I did not waste any money. I never consider obtaining an education a waste. It's a privilidge.
How did I find time? I was young and busted my ass and went without a lot of sleep.
You can manage and not be cold hearted.
And your last sentence is a prime example of what's wrong with a small minority of rail workers...you would f**k over fellow employees, your employer and the rail customers and let the truckers win.
you know what amazes me about you ppl? how oblivious you are to the insincerity shown to you by T&E. if and when you find out that 99% of t&e hate your guts (and im 100% sure this is the case), you will either be genuinely surprised, or genuinely not care. either way, it makes you a terrible human being, because you cant fix stupid, and no one likes an asshole, especially one who buys his own bullshit.
the reason no one keeps railroading is because it sucks. you're never home, and never know when you're going to work, etc. it has nothing to do with attitude. and thats what i mean, you think im a minority in my opinions. unreal. and why would i screw off? im paid before the trip starts, so the sooner im done the better. the only reason i would screw off is to stick it to an asshole yardmaster or something. ide rather work at mcdonalds than be terminal supt.
No one keeps railroading? LOL. Are you serious? One issue facing railroading is that the average age of the employees rises each year as employees hang on forever.
When you stick it to a yardmaster...you're sticking it to a customer. The yardmaster gets paid the same. The customer goes to truck. You go to McDonalds.
You'd rather work at McDonalds because you know in your heart that is all you are equipped to handle in life. A sad, pathetic, complaining no ambition loser.
t&e's turnover rate is better than 70%, its only the old heads that stick around, and thats because they have nowhere else to go. theyr stuck. MY job security is in jeopardy due to ppl like YOU, not because of trucks or how much time i take doing my job. the railroad isnt going anywhere. and ide quit if they even offered me a promotion of any kind other than engineer, because i know what that means. clearly you lack the dignity to turn em in when sum1 tells u ur no good at what u do.
Exactly. Your job security is in jeapordy because people like me see you are a whining, lazy, worthless employee who will screw over a customr to make suome silly point.
No ambition either. Even if you were offered a promotion to better yourself in lie, you would quit.
Pathetic and the sad part is, you don't know it. You condemn education and a desire to get ahead, both which made America great.
Just practice this over and over. "Fries with that mister. Fries with that Mister"
im done with you. my job has its good parts and bad parts, much like any job. i like the work (especially yard work), and i like the ppl i work with. the hours suck, but i could deal with that if it you ppl werent like... you. you represent a big part of whats wrong with the railroad as a whole. this isnt like other industries where the job importance is prioritized from top-down. congrats on being middle management, the least important position. the railroad exorcised damage control on you.
you can call me lazy if you want, but the proof is in the puddin, gramps. while your in your office on your computer and the phone, im in the yard bangin out trains. and you wouldnt question my ambition if you knew where i came from, but i wont get into that because its beside the point.
so on behalf of the majority of t&e, i extend to you not an olive branch, but my middle finger.
The proof is your own attitude here. Fuck the customer if I can make the yardmaster's job difficult. And don't give me any "where I came from shit". What you are now is what counts, and that is a whining, pathetic little trainman. An embarrassment to the hard working men who share your craft.
Grow up and know this. Everytime you give me the middle finger....I just laugh.
Hell ya, have a 8 o clock start, set out the cars, spot up the industries and have a 1300 T time at the course, 3.5 hours work for a 8 hours of pay. why would anyone be slow or lazy. God bless the SP guys and there jobs they made for us U.P. youngsters
So Frost...here's my idea of a typical conversation you have in the cab each day.
"Management sucks. I don't get early quits anymore. I don't get to sleep in the cab anymore. They don't let me drink on the job or snort coke anymore. I'm gonna fuck the yardmaster and take forever switching out ABC Industries. Who gives a shit if they go to truck. Let's see how hard I can kick this car. Oh woe is me. My life as one of the highest paid blue collar workers in America sucks. Woe is me"
pussy beer and sports. thats all i talk about, unless its about the task at hand. never got any quits, never done any drugs on the job, rarely fuck the yardmaster, and it doesnt go to truck. thats company propaganda. the conversation isnt about whether management sucks or not, its whether they know if they suck or not. they seem pretty oblivious to me, but some engineers think they know, but they just dont care. but way to put words in my mouth and be wrong on almost everything.
Nah. I read your posts here Frostman and I think I know you pretty damn well. I think I hit you and your loser attitude dead on.
Propaganda it doesn't go to truck? LOL. Rail statistics prove you wrong kid. Carload traffic is down 20% over the past 10 years and truckers eat our lunch.
Thank God we can sell off branches to shortlines where people with your attitude are weeded out and we can maintain the traffic.
another one who thinks im a minority. im not really surprised, just disheartened. we can tell these ppl to their face what we really think of them, and they just brush it off. "thats not how it is, its only a handful of assholes' opinions." the idea of change or compromise or even civilized discussion never crosses their minds, only an FU attitude towards subordinates. its a superiority complex that is universally shared between them. it truly makes me disappointed.
Just read your own posts. You're better, willing to fuck over the customer to prove a silly point to a yardmaster, and ignoring statistics that truckers take away your livilihood daily.
I'm disheartened because "some" of you don't get it. The FU attitude in these posts come from you. Read them.
touche. an FU attitude is hard not to develop after a while on the rails. regardless, im not the one in charge of fixing it. the sooner our "leaders" realize there IS, in fact, a problem, the sooner we can take steps to develop a solution.
by "some", i sure hope u mean most. it seems like u do, but the way the ppl are, im just not convinced.
it could be a nice job if the environment changes...
I've railroaded my entire working career and w/o a doubt I've had a "FU" attitude from time to time.
Instead of sitting back and complaining however, I decided to try and do something about it. It's more personally challenging for me to be a "leader" and try to tackle the massive problems facing our industry than to sit back and complain.
And I agree. It can be a nice job. Even when I was running I enjoyed it. Not always. But for the most part I did and do.
I have an American "go get em" spirit. I worked my ass off and took every opportunity I could to learn. I went ot school at night and earned a masters in IT. When an opportunity came for a move up I took it.
Most managers I know opted to do what made America great and not accept no for an answer. Keep learning. Keep trying. Don't settle.
I could certainly still be holding a conductor's job in Bumfuck, LA.

I'm currently a terminal supt. on UP and let me tell you I know wtf I'm talking about.

no but i come through your railroad almost every week and do work in your yard. goes to show how out of touch management is.
"the guys are in good spirits. everyone loves working for the railroad. we have no problems. job security is great." right?
BTW how many points did you deduct from your subordinates last week? or are u a big terminal, and that isnt your job?
BTW i remember answering 20 questions for my drivers license. i also remember answering 250 questions for my conductor test

Hate me or not. I'll treat you fairly as long as you obey the rules and move the customers product as you are paid to do.

Moreover, there are 3 ways to become upper management.
1: you started out as management (seeing as how you were a conductor and engineer, this isnt the case)
2: you sucked up to your superiors, and when a job opened up, they gave your brown nose a job
3: you were an inept railroader, and they couldnt find a way to fire you, so to increase production, they promoted you
which are you?
