@Alienxfb no, he said allowing the "foot in the crease" rule to persist that long was the mistake. in other words, if he could go back in time and change things, we wouldn't even be talking about this
Bettman recently came out in an interview with Bob Costas and admitted that allowing this goal was one of the 3 biggest regrets of his professional life.
@insaneiaq Whatever. The point is, Buffalo got screwed because this whole ridiculous thing never should have happened. It's the only time in North American professional sports that a championship was decided a bad call/rule/whatever you want to name it. And it never should have happened.
I've always wanted to go to a Stanley Cup Finals game. My dad was at the Penguins and North Stars game 3 or 4, can't remember which, in 1991 and saw Mario Lemieux's most famous goal live.
The Sabres are my second favorite team behind the Penguins. I really wanted them to win this series.
@transinater haha thats cute i remeber when i had my first beer...nah brah i actually play the sport you "youtube" i dont just watch it i play it...so got talk trash to someone else...
Full marks to Hasek and the Sabres for making it as far as they did, but the better team won that year. Sucks that the winning goal seems to have been shrouded in controversy this whole time, as it was ruled that year to be a legal goal.
when the stars scored and won Bret Hull's foot was in the crease and that would be counted no goal. But they counted it a goal. Then years later they counted it no goal, but it was to late.
i dont c y it shouldnt have counted, maybe the tip of hulls skate was in the crease, but first he was playing so far back into his net it doesnt matter, and two he knew it was a goal, thats y he was skating off so fast
@l3g1tsteven In these times (before this game) If any attacking players body was in the crease, it was No Goal. It happened before, a goal being called of because of it. Thats y its no goal. the nhl changed the rule to what it was the next day to what it is now.
@MichRockHop81108 That rule was in place to protect the goaltenders, so they could feel safe in their crease. Even though it didnt do anything to the affect of the goal, it was inforced. Goals earlier were taken down and said as No Goal because of it.
As a Stars fan, i feel that Buffalo and Hasek would have beaten us in game 7. I was up late here in NY shitting bricks, around 2:30 in the morning, half dead on my couch scared as a motherfucker! I felt bad when Gary Thorne, during the Stars lockerroom celebration mentioned it. I felt sick, but was glad my team won it's only cup
FYI: The NHL Commissioner ordered the Stanley Cup brought to Center Ice before settling the matter and then said, "I was wrong. I'm sorry but there is nothing I can do because the Cup has now been awarded. I'm not going to have to "take back the trophy." That is another contributing factor why so many people are upset to this day.
@ PhillyFanatic: It would be a goal now, but it wasn't then. They changed the rule immediately after that season. Here's how it was worded that season:
"Unless the puck is in the goal crease area, a player of the attacking side may not stand in the goal crease. If a player has entered the crease prior to the puck, and subsequently the puck should enter the net while such conditions prevail, the apparent goal shall not be allowed." NO GOAL
@owenfogle012201 this is a continuation from my previous comment...
-had cameras to see..the refs had no idea becuase it wasnt in enough to even be considered a penalty..
its not like he ran in the crease and scored..he shifted his body and half is blade was in..even if his blade wasnt in the same goal would have happend the exact same way..I completly understand if he was standing in the crease but he wasnt.. Id be saying the same thing you would be though so whats done is done.
@tjd92295 I wasnt around for the goal but what I do know is that we were the best team in the NHL for 3 seasons straight and we had dominance aginst the Sabres...we got the goal and its over..your goalie could have made the save and he didnt..im sorry your team lost but dont blame the refs for something your team could have avioded...good luck to the Buffalo Sabres in this years playoffs though.
@owenfogle012201 Okay..from when hockey started to now refs pick and choose there calls right? They say..okay that was a trip or no it was embleshed..and sometimes they look at things like if the foot was in the crease...half of his right blade was in at the top of the crease yes..I admit it was..we get that part..but why is it not a penatly everyone..becuase his one blad in the top of the crease had no affect whatsoever on the play..the only way it is even questionable is becuase was becuase we
To this day it is brought up and I cant stand the fact that this happened, Simply pisses me off! Such an exciting time and year. I was at many of these games and Hasek was amazing to watch. His saves are the greatest ever! GO SABRE'S!
Belfour was the greatest that time. IT was like two of my favorite goalies were going against eachother. Both of them were from the Chicago Blackhawks before.
You do realize the NHL had to pay Wayne Gretzky to endorse the goal at the awards ceremony a few weeks later, then change the rules that summer in an attempt to save face, right? They didn't call the goal off because the media opened the door at the zamboni entrance and started interviews before the league even got a chance to think about reviewing it- and this is why EVERY GOAL is reviewed now.
We're pretty stupid, and really un-informed I guess.
if the sabres were so sure they would have won in 1999, even if hull's goal didn't count and it went 7, how do they know they would have gone into dallas and won the cup? and the sabres totally need those black jerseys again. purple's good for retro and throwback but....ehh they need the black ones again.
What I really meant was that I thought the Dallas Stars won the Stanley Cup, because they were the better team in 1999. And, Brett Hull deserves credit for scoring a big goal in that game, and because of him his name's engraved on the Stanley Cup, along with the rest of his players.
What I really meant to say was that Dallas won the Stanley Cup fair and square, and Brett Hull scored a big goal to help the Stars became champions.
I didn't know what I was thinking what I said something that foolish, and I apologize for that, but I'm glad the Stars won the Stanley Cup, thanks to Brett Hull.
@khidak1 thats cool, but i do wonder if say the NHL did say one day that a play was wrong and it cost a team a cup i wonder if they could retro activeily change anything just food for thought
@khidak1 they didn't win fair and square. if it was fair and square, people wouldn't be complaining about it. but his foot was clearly in the crease, which is a violation of the rules. brett hull earned the title of 'cheater' for the rest of his life.
@WEINBAUER yeah.and i'm gonna fix my previous comment about Brett Hull earning the title of cheater. I guess you can't really blame him for accidentaly being in the crease. It was more the officiating there.
@Chiefsplayr17 You know what was really funny to come out of all of this? When Hull and Hasek were on the Wings in 2001-02 they were roomates on the road.Supposedly according to Hull they never talked about that goal either.I find that hard to believe, but that's his story.I don't know what's more uncomfortable that situation or Bill Buckner and Mookie Wilson going to baseball card shows together signing 8 X 10's of the photo of the ball going through his legs from the 1986 world series.
Been quoted by the actually referee, that once the goal was scored, there were to many people, such as the team, ceremony staff, and reporters, that they had no chance to actually review the play, without causing some sort of uproar. Oh well, Sabres will win it one day, and the Stars will continue to have a shitty fan base in a state that doesn't deserve hockey.
@thewachamacallitshow if you have possesion of the puck it counts as a goal..he entered the creas legally..if he just came in the crease and scored then no..they explanied it right after the game was over and said it counted
@Spiller716 he didnt..the goalie feel down to cover the puck..al he did was deflect it turned around..took the puck and scored..no interference in there.
no stupid ass the no crease rule was to prevent players from interfere with the goalies so if he clearly had his skate in the crease then they contradict their own rule ...???rite

What people don't talk about is the Sabres' inability to score- 4 goals in the final 4 games.
