I am applying for a permit to transport my python to school programs and have found the process to be 100 times more difficult and time consuming then it is to get a permit for my concealed weapon, and a permit for a suppressor for my gun. And this is in the NW where these pythons could not live a week in the wild. Makes the biologists enforcing this law look moronic.
Too bad politicians can't be honest and admit this isn't about the environment, and is instead about looking good to the public by banning those scawy evil snakes. Cats have been decimating wildlife in all parts of the US for years, and do way more damage than any other pet animal. Why are none of these politicians who supposedly care so much for the environment proposing to restrict pet cats? That would help so much more than restricting snake ownership.
You can't "Ban" people from purchasing what they want. Did the U.S. Government learn nothing from prohibition and the war on drugs? All they will do is bolster the black market for this animal, creating crime and suffering/pain for the animal. =(
Burmese pythons, getting 26 feet long? Fluffy, a reticulated python, holds the world record for longest snake... and Fluffy is only 24 feet. Yay for fear mongering and propaganda!
I really wish this would quit being labeled as a ban on importing these snakes. I would be thrilled if that was what happened. What happened was a ban on getting them across state lines and what happened was a door was opened to ban more animals from being in the hands of dedicated and skilled people.
This ban is so unintelligent at best. The Burmese is the only snake that is living in south florida and the entire population of burms has been traced back to 2 snakes that had escaped while a breeding facility was taken out by a hurricane. Stoping the import and sales of these animals isn't going to stop the wild population of Burmese, it's just going to take away the rights of Americans to own the animals that they want.
I have a burmese, afrock, and reticulated pythons. I love them and I feel like they are banning the animal not stopping the problem. The problem is the idiots in florida that have screens outside for cages and get blown apart by storms, and people releasing pets. Regulate the area with the stupid people, not the country!
It's a pity we don't still have Steve to put this ass back in his place. He's been on TV so long, he thinks he's the be all and end all. He's a joke, not an expert. He has no clue what he's talking about. If there were tens on thousands of them, why the hell are they so hard to find ?
Keeping the Burmese out of the Everglades will save the area and the endangered species? Keeping the humans out of the Everglades and stop over populating the area and the area will survive. Is everybody blind and ignorant to reality? This won't stop anything but will increase the breeders that take their business underground and families will lose their income and not be able to pay off their debts from loans and tax payers will have to support their families.
It's like this !!!! The snakes and crocs were living in the everglades when humans decided to excavate the land to build houses and housing projects in the everglades area. Where is the common sense in that? Why would people NOT expect to have crocs and snakes on their property? The snakes aren't the invasive species nor the predators but the humans took over that area which makes them the predators and the invasive species. Don't like the wildlife? Then don't have the everglades for you yard !
A nationwide ban on the interstate transport of these four snake species will not do a thing to help the problem of invasive Burmese Pythons already in Florida! The species covered are native to tropical areas, and nowhere in the contiguous United States except southern Florida has a tropical climate that can sustain them. Even northern Florida and the rest of the southern United States are inhospitable to these snakes, due to the freezing cold snaps that move down from the north in the winter.
I really hope this law does not pass. The ban will harm many reptile enthusiast, and careers. Also the reason why the everglades does have an issue with Burmese Pythons
1: The Climate is hot and humid which the snake can live in
2: Sometime in the 90’s a hurricane hit, and released a lot of pet snakes, not poor ownership!
Florida (everglades) is the only state that has issues with the Burmese pythons. One state issue should not jeopardize the rest of the world!
Jack wants to keep the reputable breeders in business, but says pythons are bad pets because they get so big, you'll have to get rid of them eventually. I bet these breeders make most of their money selling pets. Since nobody can take the big snakes, that means the pets will have to die, or go to the Everglades. Jack doesn't seem to want to deal with this obvious point.
@eBe4IXcept Plenty of people can and do keep them as pets the problem is idiot impulse buyers who dont know what theyre buying and dont have the commitment to care for the animal they bought out of impulse. Its not really a big secret that some of these snakes get very large.
