First of all, absolutely nothing involving the wrapped bundle of wires is happening in the video. If you look at the bottom of the screen, you can see the guy's shadow as he hits the can with something from behind that mess. Secondly, that mess wouldn't do anything other than heat up and melt if anywhere near enough power to get a projectile moving was run through it.

It would. I think JDogg means to use magnet wire, which, if you didn't know (and you might), is copper wire with an extremely thin layer of insulation over it. Obviously, "magnet wire" is commonly used in electromagnets. :D

For capacitors it's best to use ceramic. You can go high voltage low uF, or vice versa. Make sure whatever you do get corresponds to the power supply you are using. Anything from DC batteries to a pc power supply. Make sure you use a high rated momentary switch for firing. That way you get a full discharge to really send your projectile flying. This isn't all of the advice you will need, but it should start you in a better direction. Have fun!

You should do a bit a refineing, yes. For your barrel use glass, plastic or pvc. (thin is good. The barrel is just sending your projectile out straight) Use magnetic wire from radio shack like others said. Don't make your coil too long, but make it fat. If the coil is too long you will experience suckback as well. The coil will begin recharging itself before your projectile has fully exited the barrel.

I guess this is a first try? If it is, it better than my first try when a photoflash capacitor exploded in my face. Get some magnet wire and probably find a better match in terms of capacitor size to prevent the suckback. Also be sure to use a diode parallel with you coil or you will ruin your caps. BTW whoever says shooting spraypaint cans is stupid, those things are awesome to puncture [safely], they go off like colorful rockets!

it looks like the coil is too long, wire is sloppy and insulated, and the power supply is being switched off too late. I think maybe you tried to make something you thought was badass without understanding the basic principles first. I'm kind of glad it didn't work, or else you would have metal bits in your face and paint all over your workshop.

This is a terribly sloppy coil using wire with incredibly thick insulation. Radio Shack sells magnet wire for really cheap and I'm sure you can order in higher guages for cheap online. Good cheap demonstration but without magnetic efficiency its just an automatic marble shooter.
