Hip-Hop got a hard time in the 80s and 90s. Hip-Hop critics were harder on artists back then because everybody had to be doing their own thing and bringing something different.
Nowadays, everybody jacks each others' styles and uses overproduced music to hide the fact that nobody can just spit RAW rhymes anymore. Therefore, the critics will hype and give any new mediocre rap album a positive review.
A key example is Kanye West's MBDTF. Most overrated album ever. Lyrics suck
