I completely disagree... Billie Holiday didn't even give it a good melody! She warbled the poem against some Jazz music... Big deal! Siouxsie gave the song a beautiful dramatic melody and a riff of a Dixie Land Funeral March.  Billie Holiday's version can't even come close to Siouxsie's version.

The south had a high concentration of blacks due to plantation. People would hang "rebelious" black people from trees, after the emancipation proclimation, in order to place fear in their hearts. This made it easy to keep them "in line".

I happen to know some stats as a matter of fact: less than 3 million total men are incarcerated in any penal instit. including half way houses , jails and juvy that is less than 1% of our nation's pop. The fastest growing group for violent crime is Hispanic but as of 2007, whites still comprised the largest # of people in jail, when blacks are used, they are not compared against the total pop but against their own race and age groups.
