al qaeda is a CIA invention moved from nation to nation as a tool of destabalization. A true patriot is a man who lives free in any land at all cost. Ben Franklin once said he who would give up liberty for security deserves niether. Are you so scared of terrorists that you are willing to give up any liberty at all? If so then you are not a patriot and quite possibly a pussy ta boot. Great song.
Uhhh, the PLO is completely secular, al qaeda is completely opposite. The IRA dispatched warnings before bombs went off to AVOID civilian casualties, AQ prays for civilian deaths. IRA had broad support of the people. AQ kills people who wane in support.

This is an immense task because most people will always take the easy option, remain silent and allow the machine to trundle on and crush and oppress.
@Uuuurk My take has always been that it's not specifically "anti-patriotic" &/or "Anti-IRA" per se... On one hand it is a memorial to young "Mr. O'Hanlon," who died (in the 50's if I recall correctly) so young. On the other hand, I think it tells a very honest story without explicitly approving or disproving. In the lyrics you can hear where O'Hanlon or countless others were coming from, but you sort of get the idea the "romance of war" is a path to many dead young men.
@WhoIsBaz I'll admit Harvey Andrews has until now escaped me. A few thoughts: I hate to just blow off a song without listening to it first, but my jaw hit the floor when I saw "the british soldiers song (sounds like a tribute to me)" Is he from the Orange parts of the 6 counties or something? I mean, I'd wish for nothing more than real legitimate peace-or nobody wins.
OK so, this guy is cool but no Burt Jansch.Regarding the lyrics, I have found O'Hanlon from Monaghan, but the age is wrong. ,
@AnomicDeadDisciple Harvey Andrews is an English singer-songwriter from the Midlands of England and normally only sings his own songs. His song "The Soldier" is about a British soldier who threw himself on a bomb to protect civilians (based on a real incident). It's a great song and not nationalistic as such. It is only one of his songs, of which hardly any others are about the Troubles. The song "The Patriot Game" was written by Dominic Behan (Brendan's brother).
@moominpic Hey, thanks for the 411 on that. (I was getting a bit disillusioned with the number of Ignorant Slur=hurling flamers on here)
I'll have to check that tune of his out, sounds like a story that deserves a song to commemorate it. I'm actually not anti-british anymore than I'm "Anti-American" (i.e I assume the people are good people, only attribute "prick-ish" behavior to that particular individual, and speak my mind regarding the Govt.) I'm weary in general of nationalism. Thanks again.
@AnomicDeadDisciple Your welcome. What worries me is that people might think Harvey is just about 'cause' songs. He isn't. He has written some really beautiful songs about love and life in general. definitely worth your while checking him out.
Absolutely nothing to do with Harvey Andrews. One's mans traitor or terrorist is another mans patriot or hero, doesn't matter which part of the world or which era you live in you're in - it's exactly the same!
This song was written by Dominic Behan, a republican socialist who was an associate member of the Workers Party and a close friend and comrade of Sean Garland, Tomás Mac Giolla, Liam McMillen and Cathal Goulding.
His ashes were scattered on the Royal Canal by May MacGiolla, widow of Tomás and the oration was given by his comrade and friend, Sean Garland, Gen. Sec. of the Workers Party. 1989.
@Mega11bravo no such thing as British ethnicity, only English, Welsh, Scots, etc. Britain and "Britishness" are inventions of the monarchy and the other evil imperialists.
@monkeyapplenerd But the concept of ethnicity itself is just as much an invention. Humans are 99% identical yet time and again we put our differences ahead of our common humanity.
@monkeyapplenerd That depends on how you define "British" since the modern day Welsh, Cornish, and Breton peoples are descended from the Britons, the Celtic people who were the first inhabitants of what is now England, Wales, and southern Scotland. That is the true British ethnicity. Otherwise, you're looking at Anglo-saxons (a designation still preserved in the Welsh word for the English, "saeson", and the Scotish "saesonach") who came originally from Germany.
After Ireland is free, says the patriot who won't touch Socialism, we will protect all classes, and if you won't pay your rent you will be evicted same as now. But the evicting party, under command of the sheriff, will wear green uniforms and the Harp without the Crown, and the warrant turning you out on the roadside will be stamped with the arms of the Irish Republic.
@Mega11bravo My Father was born in Southern Ireland and joined the struggle for independence. That partly won he married a Scottish woman and spent 22 years in the British Army, fought from Norway to Anzio, and was twice mentioned in despatches. I think he could be called a "British Patriot".
This is Harvey. And yes he is british. He didn't record this song as a political statement, it was more to put a human face on the different factions in NI. Thats why he also wrote "Soldier". Scroll down "Related Videos" it's in there somewhere. Both great songs.
A very beautiful and doleful song.... It has been a long time since I was young and certain of black and white/right and wrong, but it certainly stirs the soul to want to do the noble thing to give oneself to a just cause. How powerful is the notion that there are those who are fighting for justice and those who are "quislings". Oh, how it ennobles the soul to strive for such glory. This song certainly captures that desire. Thanks.
This song could almost be well played to a montage of the Conflicts of the Twentieth Century; the futility of war.... after all the fighting for so-called great causes... the world is just as corrupt and oppresses as it was 100 years ago.
Interesting how this song features James Connelly. The socialist who told his men to keep hold of their rifles if they were successful at Easter as they would need them against the Nationalists.
which we have always know the Irish are not be disrespected. Its not the choice of all the England people that ever lived to want to repress the Irish. Its old and continued religious repressions from reflections or so they tell us. Either way, we are all connected, without hate, without borders, withour blind idoiocy. Be true to yourself, your history and future.
you havent had your 94 year old grandmothers door kicked in,by a cunt wearing a british flag on his sleeve, claiming a right to invade her home.i have nothing against americans, but dont mouth off to us,unless you have experienced the same
What a stupid comment, I could take it apart piece by piece, but I would rather not waste my time with you. Your one of those who no matter what anyone says you wont hear a word of it and you'll just keep on spewing shite.
I don't hear this song as a condemnation of Ireland's freedom struggle. I do hear it as a comment on how a people's fever of patriotism can be abused by those in charge. Which is a universal reality, dude. As you listed, we yanks are all too experienced in the corruption of wars. And isn't Kelly an Irish name?
The national flag is the tricolor of green, white and orange.
orange to represent the protestant or unionist tradition, green to represent the catholic or nationalist tradition and white for the peace it was hoped would exist between them.
Perhaps we could eliminate the orange. I could go for that.
@michmo93 Our great Leaders would not have been of The Orangemen!.. OK.. Protestant... The Presbyterians and the Catholics were excluded from Grattans Parliment by Penal laws.... So Henry Joy McCracken ,Wolfe Tone and many outhers, saw common cause with the Irish Catholics to Rebel under the banner of 'The United Irishmen'...You're right about the Flag.. this should threaten no one... The Ultimate flag to bring together.. those of both traditions... also..."Protestant Catholic and Dissenter"
Its the british army/police force and government. They occupy part of ireland, have killed innocents and discriminated against catholics and republicans for over 800 years.
Fuck the british and all they have done to my family and my ancestoral home. Im sorry my rifle has not done the same to the rebels who sold out a patriots name! {In my own words} I know the bloody lyrics!
that would be James Connolly. he was one of the leaders of the 1916 Easter rising. i see you are communist you would probably really like James then because was a socialist and a Marxist theorist.
yes that's James Connly he was intrested in Marxism/communism but he called himself a socialist not a communist but I think he liked that theory as well personally he's one of the only Irish leadears I can truely respect a long with James ("big jim") larkin who was also a communist
Dominic Behan wrote it and he is the brother of Brendan Behan that great writer and was an Irish poet, short story writer, novelist, and playwright who wrote in both Irish and English. He was also a committed Irish Republican and a volunteer in the Irish Republican Army.
everytime i hear this song i cry. UP THE RA... alas i also love the UK, but still up the RA

Another yank telling us how bad we are. Look at the history of the US Govt.
They butchered Native Americans and stole their land.
They took black families from Africa and enslaved them in America.
They arranged the sinking of the Lusitania, the bombing of Pearl Harbour.
They arranged the assination their president, JFK
They arranged the 9/11 attacks on their own people.
They invaded Vietnam/Iraq and Afgahnastan.
People in glass houses!
I'll take criticism off an Irishman, not off a Yank

What a stupid comment, I could take it apart piece by piece, but I would rather not waste my time with you. Your one of those who no matter what anyone says you wont hear a word of it and you'll just keep on spewing shite.

I don't hear this song as a condemnation of Ireland's freedom struggle. I do hear it as a comment on how a people's fever of patriotism can be abused by those in charge. Which is a universal reality, dude. As you listed, we yanks are all too experienced in the corruption of wars. And isn't Kelly an Irish name?

Irony being this song is being sung by the well known english folk singer Harvey Andrews.

Actually, each color stands for different things
The national flag is the tricolor of green, white and orange.
orange to represent the protestant or unionist tradition, green to represent the catholic or nationalist tradition and white for the peace it was hoped would exist between them.
Perhaps we could eliminate the orange. I could go for that.

you cant change our national flag. Many of our greatest fighters were protestant(orange) men. All rebels, All Irish, no matter what faith.
michmo93 2 years ago 15
@michmo93 Our great Leaders would not have been of The Orangemen!.. OK.. Protestant... The Presbyterians and the Catholics were excluded from Grattans Parliment by Penal laws.... So Henry Joy McCracken ,Wolfe Tone and many outhers, saw common cause with the Irish Catholics to Rebel under the banner of 'The United Irishmen'...You're right about the Flag.. this should threaten no one... The Ultimate flag to bring together.. those of both traditions... also..."Protestant Catholic and Dissenter"

A lot of Brits support the IRA
The Brit Gov would hand it back today if they could, theres a bit of a problem with the North though, its still infested with Cromwell's snakes

Its the british army/police force and government. They occupy part of ireland, have killed innocents and discriminated against catholics and republicans for over 800 years.
garrettda1 2 years ago 4
Fuck the british and all they have done to my family and my ancestoral home. Im sorry my rifle has not done the same to the rebels who sold out a patriots name! {In my own words} I know the bloody lyrics!

that would be James Connolly. he was one of the leaders of the 1916 Easter rising. i see you are communist you would probably really like James then because was a socialist and a Marxist theorist.
monkeyapplenerd 3 years ago
yes that's James Connly he was intrested in Marxism/communism but he called himself a socialist not a communist but I think he liked that theory as well personally he's one of the only Irish leadears I can truely respect a long with James ("big jim") larkin who was also a communist
Peadarisback 3 years ago 2
harvey may be singing it but didnt write it
Dominic Behan wrote it and he is the brother of Brendan Behan that great writer and was an Irish poet, short story writer, novelist, and playwright who wrote in both Irish and English. He was also a committed Irish Republican and a volunteer in the Irish Republican Army.
Read his autobiography, Borstal Boy.
