Wonderful performance! I performed this decades ago and as difficult it was for the clarinet the bassoon part had to be right on to make the piece sound good. The clarinetist hardly had time to take breaths throughout this. The bassoonist's sound is dark and rich. I wish that I could still play that well.
MOST instruments are very easy... to play...BADLY.
The unique thing about the bassoon is that you just can't do anything with it, no matter what! 30 years on it and I am nowhere near where I want to be.
Ah, I remember commenting on this like well it says 5 months ago, but then i could barely play my Bflat scale, and now I've improved so much. 2 years of clarinet, and this is my first year on bassoon. I've recently made two honor bands, one trying out for and the other chosen for.
Some instruments just take more skill. I'm a bisectional. I played the clarinet and oboe for years before picking up the bassoon. The clarinet was the easiest to sound good on, and the bassoon and oboe, although they were both double reeds, were vastly different experiences. Bassoon is difficult.
The fingerings are kind of a mix of clarinet and oboe, but it's really great to play. It's hard to sound good on the bassoon (One of my so-called friends said I sounded like a dying moose -- which is nice), but overall, it's probably my favorite wind instrument to play. It's low, warm, rich and has a really unique sound, and it sounds a lot better than clarinet on its high notes (Bassoon high notes are pretty high, too).
I happen to play both Bassoon and Clarinet and both can be difficult at times. Bassoon was pretty easy for me but I guess it varies from person to person.
Agreed, I played clarinet for 2 years then my band director showed us the basson. I loved it. All of it. I told him I'd like to try but he told me some people simply can't play basson. Not becouse they're stupid or anything. It's like dancing. Some people simply can't. I'm no where near this good. Our band is really small so I have to stick with clarinet, but I still haven't lost my love for the bassoon.
it takes some practice...in our marching show this year, we require a lot of extremely high notes...theyre really hard to get out sometimes!! you have to tighten your lips too much!! XD oh plus air!! thats what our clarinet-playing director mr.benfield told us. i wonder if he plays flute or piccolo...that would be hilarious. he's this like, really big(like tall, muscularish(wtf?!?! ok idk how to describe him XD) dude who plays clarinet. he came in class and started to play bass clarinet. XD:P
eh, poptart's one of my trumpet friends. i think he's jealous of how high the oboe can get XD :P omg i cant hit a high g(which is the highest note on oboe i think, which is extremely high ,but not like piccolo high), but its like way higher than a trumpet high g. just go about two octaves(or one, idk) up!! XD
absolutly. I have played the clarinet for 7 years, and next year I will be going to university for Clarinet performance. I love the sound, it's so nice and lyrical.
I've had people make fun of it too (sounds like a dying cat when the upper register isn't played properly) but usually the people making fun of it are trumpets, who sound like crap when they are played badly anyhow.
neither can i. i love clarinet and flute as well. along with picc, oboe and bassoon. still working on my sound on oboe and bassoon...mostly bassoon, but getting there. i recently started playing clarinet AGAIN, so, need to work on that sound as well. well, keep on going with it. :)
ugh,my whole woodwinds class makes fun of the sound of the oboe cuz they think it sounds like a squeaking clarinet.,which is really unnerving when im taking a playing test and everyone starts giggling, okay, the next person who laughs during my test is gonna get a tuba shoved up their crack!!
ooh, or is the tuba gonna get a person in its bell?
XD anyways really. im gonna slap someone for it. and its usually my best friend and the rest of the clarinets that laugh...GRR :P theyre weird like that
omg did oyou hear the baby crying at 2:49 thats gotta be annoying to the players. so are the people talking the whole time. XP dont you people know how to behave at a concert?
Nice, lively and enjoyable. Great balance. What a rich bassoon sound. Is it a Fox. I play a puchner. The clarinet just flows as well. Keep up the great work. It is much harder doing a performance in front of people who talk. Your playing was oblivious to it. If you like, go to google, type in Ben Brenner, and click on the first website. You should be surprised at what you see. There is a video of me on the Tonight Show in 1979 plus much more.

A beautiful piece played by beautiful musicians. I play the bassoon myself (am an amateur) and would love to preform this piece one day.

the funny thing about this is that the bassoon is way harder than the clarinet

To say that one instrument is harder than another is extremely ignorant.

Not actually.

oh. my. gosh.
i did the same thing!!
cept i play clarinet and oboe this year(marching band and eighth grade concert band(oboe) ) and i might play bassoon next year!!
is it really hard? or is it sort of like playing a lower version of an oboe?
just wondering, thanks.

Compared to the clarinet, a trumpet played well hardly compares to the dying cat sound of the upper register of the clarinet :D
