She's attempting to make an argument to defend--- find a loophole to exploit so she can continue to not do her government clerk job. She needs to resign forthwith.
your office is the office of the Town Clerk - WHICH MEANS you work for the people, all the people, who pay taxes for your job to exist. So you WILL serve them, or leave.
Belforti's argument is despicable. She's trying to pretend that the analogy is someone going into the DMV and insisting that one particular employee help them. The real analogy is if a Black person went into the DMV and a partucular employee REFUSED to help because that person was Black. That's what's really going on here. It's called discrimination. Let's stop with the smoke and mirrors, shall we?
Like this woman, I too work for the government...but the Federal governemnt in my case. IF I refused to serve someone who came to my agency ..i would be out the door. why is she still allowed to work for NY state?
What a joke, she doesnt understand why people are pissed that she ISNT DOING HER JOB. thats like me being a waiter and saying, i dont wanna serve those heterosexuals, make the straight waiter do it when hes done with ALL of his tables. you would be pissed and want your service
You see, people don't choose who signs their marriage license, if the person you have assigned to do that is off duty, as the person on duty, it is your right as a civil servant to do so. if it is against your private religious beliefs then you should either learn to separate your religious beliefs from your duties as an employee of the state (you are not choosing to give marriages licenses to same-sex couples, you are required by law, hence, your "religious guilt" is irrelevant) OR resign.
I always thought it was unchristian to judge others. If she can't do her job without imposing her own judgement on people applying for a marriage license she should resign!
She's not working for Rose Marie Belforti, she's working for the people of the state of New York. Do the job, apply the laws as they were enacted - or stay home.
I'd like to give this woman the benefit of the doubt, at least she wasn't refusing out-right to allow ANY marriage certificates to gay couples. It's a small step at least in the right direction
But then I think about the hypothetical racist restaurant owner. We said to him that no matter his beliefs or opinions, he cannot refuse to serve people based on their race.
They either have to swallow their pride or find alternative employment.
@InMyNightSky There is a difference. She was perfectly capable of signing their marriage license when they came in the first time. Instead she sent them away. " Sorry, I don't approve of your otherwise perfectly legal marriage, come back when a different clerk is here." Imagine if a dvm clerk refused to give drivers licenses to chinese people because they thought it was morally wrong.
Marriage in NY is not creating any type of crisis lol. As a Christian I am vehemently against war, however, when I served I had a choice of either following orders or getting discharged. Rose Marie, nice attempt to twist the story but simply put, you are refusing to do your job - nothing more, nothing less. We cannot randomly choose what verses of the Bible we want to follow. What if your religious convictions said no licenses to the elderly because they cannot bear children? God bless you.
You're a government worker, not a private business employee. If you have a conscientious objection, you have no right to keep your job. It doesn't matter what the event is, refusing to follow your duties by not signing a marriage license, you lost your job. She should be so lucky if she gets offered a different position elsewhere.

"it's not much different than if you go to the DMV."
So..... Is she saying that Christian clerks in the DMV should be able to refuse to license a vehicle to a same-sex couple?

I’m glad it hurts to be a bigot ... Maybe now the Christians will know how it feels to be on the other side. What a joke their faith is.
