Basically, we have a big problem in our schools. We are having kids run a marathon as in this work here without any training whatsoever in proper reading, writing and spelling instruction, which obviously MUST be in place before students can be asked to do this work. Parents should know that this instruction is implicit or constructivist, notice that there is no instruction on learning to read in this video.

Video "Teaching Reading" (by Christine D'Amico) explains why students need systematic phonics and, from what I know, is much more helpful, especially if kids are having trouble with reading.
