I'm sure you noticed everything in Fallout universe has a 50's style to it.

Some of the comments from Liberty Prime like "The last domino falls here" are reference to the Cold War. Eisenhowers "Domino effect" was Indo China falling to the communist ideologies. Russia, China and so on, one by one (like domino's). This led to wars in Korea and Vietnam. Meanwhile Soviet expansion was held back in Europe by NATO's threat of MAD. (Nuclear annihilation was the only way the West could stop the Soviets)
