  • 4:20-4:21 that precise tone as it's changing, that is butter for me.

  • Jx series is highly underrated the I have the 3p with the pg200 and I love it more than anything, I prefer the filters on my 3p to the Juno's, much more expressive, they take a bit of programming so you sort of need the programmers to get that perfect 'tweakage" nice video

  • a really good rhythm

  • Great video. The JX series are the best deal going for analog synths these days. I love the chipsets they use and the sound is amazing, for less than a grand with the PG 800 that's a bargain in vintage stuff. They also made them until 1989 so there are lots of them to be had.

  • what is your signal path for these videos? I like the audio.

  • Hi Retro Sound,

I currently own a MKS80 and a Juno 106. I have been interested in picking up a JX8P but was wondering if there would be too greater overlap with my existing synths to justify it. Would be keen to hear your opinion. :)

  • @ProBassLessons

Sure all these synths have the typical 80s Roland synth sound but the sound is different. The JX-8P is the best for analog pads and crossmod/sync sounds, the Juno-106 is the best for deep basses and the MKS-80 is the most versatile synth.

  • @retrosound72

Thanks for the quick reply! There is one for sale locally for cheap that i may have to now snap up. : )

  • @retrosound72

There is a JX8P and MKS70 for sale locally that I am torn between. Can't decide which one to get. Given that i already have a Juno 106 and a MKS80 which do you think would be the best fit to complement those two synths?

  • @ProBassLessons

I like the JX-8P sound more, more warm and fat.

  • @retrosound72

    I have decided I am going to purchase a JX8P. : )

My next question is how essential is the PG 800?

I know that A controller is essential for this synth but are there better options than the PG800 these days?

how do you find the PG-800 to work with?

  • @ProBassLessons

Sure with the PG-800 can you in realtime more than one parameters edit in the same time but the PG is rare and expensive. When you find a PG for a good price buy it. Its fun.

  • @ProBassLessons You can use ANY generic midi control box on JX-8P. I use a BCR2000 that cost me about 1/5 the price of a PG (2nd hand). works just as well - but yeah it's nice to have the real PG but not for the price they go for.

  • @ProBassLessons Get both. I owned the JX-8P with the PG-800 and wouldn't dream of using it without the progammer. I really regret selling that set up!!!

  • @ProBassLessons

i think you find templets for it online thoe.. i mean to use a controller for it and control it with god old sysex.. retrosound?

  • @ProBassLessons The JX series of synths have different (more reliable) sound chips. They are the same as the Jupiter series. That 106 is going to sound slightly different, but yeah they are all going to sound like 80's Roland synths. Hell Nick Rhodes didn't mind, it will sound fantastic.

  • Hi Retro Sound,

  • Hi, i got a JX8P (without PG 800 ) and i want to buy a juno 106...can i ?These synth are not too similar ?There is a big difference between them ? Can you explain to me? Xcuz for my pathetic english !

    THX

  • @docfraktal

the sound is different. the ju-106 is much better for bass sounds and has more low end. The 106 has only 1 DCO + SuB Osc and no osc-sync and cross-modulation.

    both synths are great

  • I love it.

Does anyone know a good&cheap substitute for the TR-707?

    Thanks.

  • Great!! I want one of those! Can you tell me what the prices are?

  • I can see how if you sequence it you can use the LFO for other stuff, very groovey!

    (Phrasing)

  • I have booth. I like them both. The 10 does the splits. I can use it with my sampler. I put moog samples in the bass.

    :)

  • Hi Retrosound. I'm thinking of getting either the JX-8p or the JX-10. Which do you prefer? Which is the warmer synth?

    Many thanks

    Simon

  • I prefer the JX-8P. It`s warmer and bigger. I sold my MKS-70 (JX10 rack) for the 8P.

  • I miss my JX-8P. I once lent it to a friend and never saw it again. I´m still pissed.

  • Same thing happened to me.....We need new friends.

  • love that 707

  • Ist das geil. Dies Klangmöglichkeiten.

  • Nice...we had a JX-8P in high school, as I'm sure many schools did...haha...but I'm sure it was largely under-utilized.

I saw a JX-10 listed in Craigslist not long ago, and I'm thinking it might be cool to pick it up...

  • @mysticradio I bet they do NOT sound better than the originals. Especially due to the technical "inferiority" of the old analogue boards the sound is more dirty and rawer than with any emulation or sampled waveforms. It just isn't the real deal. No VST or AU plugin (but also "vritual analogue" digital rompler synths) can still emulate the real deal. That won't happen very soon.

  • Oh, cool. Are these pad sounds/patches in Omnisphere named in reference to the Roland synths, or do you simply recognize a Roland type of sound in them? Thanks!

  • nobody has been able to get that nice warm JX9P warm pad sound since...... ''soundtrack' i think it was

  • I listen to lots of vintage synths on youtube but haven't the chance to try them.

Can it be that the Roland JX-8P has much warmer sounds than the famous Jupiter 8?

I'm looking for the warmest and most interesting sounding synth for pads and I get the impression that the JX-8P is it.

  • The JX-8P is the best synth for the legendary lush and warm 80` Roland pads. The Sound of the JP-8 is different to the JX.

  • Thanks so much your info, very helpful!

  • Oberheim Matrix 12: warm + most interesting pads.

Korg Wavestation: absolutely sick for pads.

Roland D50: another great pad machine... warmer than the Wavestation

Roland Jupiter 6: really nice pads, if a little bit shrill at times... but work good in a mix because they're thinner than a JP8.

Roland JX-8P: certainly a nice machine, but not very versatile really. More sophisticated than a Juno 6/60/106 but probably 1% of an Oberheim Matrx 12 or Xpander. MAYBE 1%...

  • OB-12= $2500

    KWS= Digital

    RD50=Digital

    RJ6=$1500

    RJ8P=Priceless

  • what was first jx3p or jx8p?

  • jx-3p - 1983

    jx-8P - 1985

  • awesome video. I love how you discreetly hide the 707 and the 808. like just ..."oh, whatever..." you make me miss my 909. Anyways, wonderful video.

  • thank you

  • Great video. I need a PG-800 sooo bad. The number pad doesn't work on my JX-10 so I can't even menu explore to get different sounds anymore. If anyone has one they're willing to sell, message me!

  • Hi jordanpassmore . . .

Years ago I bought a shareware program for my Mac that emulates the PG-800 visually and functionally. That was when I was on OS 8. Now I'm on OS X.6 and this little program (its footstep is smaller than 1 MB) still works! You might find it on VersionTracker or on Google.

  • Erstklassiker Klang von einem der wahrscheinlichst besten Synthesizer, die jemals zu bekommen waren.

  • I had one in the 80´s and I loved it, easy to program and you could easily get a lot of different sounds from this synth. I sold it and got Roland JX10 (if I remember the number correctly) which was basically two JX8P in one, double the fun.

  • HAHA nice! !:40 had the like SNES space shooting game kinda sound (like Gradius 3)

  • Absolutley brilliant synth. I scored a retro slasher film last year; "Demon Divas and the Lanes Of Damnation", and this Keyboard ended up on a ton of the soundtrack. So fat sounding and easy to play, great action and suprisingly clean audio output. Loved working with it.

  • i used to have the biggest prejudice against 'membrane' synths until I got an Alpha Juno 1 now i love them. I'd love to have this keyboard...great post, as always!

  • thank you eddie

  • what is a pg 800 ?

  • the external programmer unit on top of the synth

  • wow what a great sound ! class again,

you have a drum machine going with this , which one ?.

have you got a sequencer driving this ?

    thanks again..

  • drums: TR-808

MFB step sequencer sync with the TR-707 and TR-808

    thanks

  • I must find one...

  • search on ebay

  • Once again, you never fail to impress me!

    Keep up the good videos!

  • thanks :)

  • Great demo!. I am starting to want a PG for real tweaking :)

    Best,.,

    DX5

  • thanks :)

Only with the PG-800 the JX-8P makes so much fun.

  • Loving it retro, curious as to wether you record and release, if so under what name, if not get started. Enjoying you amazing synth collection, keep up the brilliant posts.

  • thanks brian :)

  • wow, thats siq!

  • Another great demo!

    Thanks for posting this!

  • thank you :)

  • hachja die dinger ham einfach nen klasse sound *schwärm*

  • Genau!
