Wow, that's a lot of work! More than I thought. Good thing I watched this video. There's no way I'm doing this now. Gonna just buy a portable laptop cooler.
I cant believe how much gash you have to go through to clean the fan! Im sat here with my screwdriver but am I feck going to try and do that! Absolutely ridiculous design, the fan should be accessible through a 1 panel on the back.
How utterly horrendous! I mean going through such a hassle just to get to the FAN! Why can't companies simply give access to the Fan/ heatsink area through a manual, under belly service bay!
Hp 8560w has an easy access service bay, so does Probook 4530s. However, the new Dv6 doesn't have access to fan/heatsink area, why? It more expensive than a probook! We have a couple of Hp Laptops in the house and this is one of them! I pray that the dreadful fan doesn't whir to a halt any time soon.
@00Tenrai00 well, the dell latitude d500's fan / heatsink is pretty easy to access. just take off the keyboard and you have access to mostly everything
@the731272 yea... but then that thing a is a relic! I think the D610 has the same service bay as well. In my experience, elite books or high end business note books usually have an easy access service bay. What do you think?
I followed every step of your tutorial in every step. But after finishing it, I startet the laptop and the screen stayed dark and I could do nothing. Also the two lights for caps-lock and num-lock were blinking.
I opened the laptop up again several times to check if everything was in place and it was.
I also have a HP DV6 laptop. But it is always overheat and I find that there is no fan for the north bridge. Do you know how to add a northbridge fan, please? Thank you
Top man laptop used to freeze and wouldnt power up after getting to hot , bought some paste and cleaner then found your video ,so glad I did cos I couldn't get laptop apart .you saved my laptop CPU temp is half to what it was . Thank you ........still ended up with one screw over though lol thanks again keep up the good work
My HP Pavilion Dv5 didn't have this problem but the obviously anything above has this problem...I had the Dv6 for 1 month now and i started to hear loud fan noise
@KongregateBadgeQuest does it turn on without the charger? If yes, then the charger is malfunctioning. If no, there may be a short some place on the motherboard and the charger's fail safe turns it off to avoid damaging the motherboard.
Laptops are like sport cars they only look good if they are running, everytime they stop running, get ready to spend some hard earned cash. You can look for a used motherboard on eBay. If it is an old machine, save up & buy a new one.
I have the same problem with my fan, its blowing and overheating my computer and I expected it to be the first thing you'd see when you disassemble it but now I don't want to disassemble it... I'll probably leave it to be or go to a techie or something D;
Had to reflow my graphics chip (heating it up to melt it back properly) fixed the problem which is common with hp dv6/9's etc.. but now i power it on.. and the fan pics up speed fast then proc cedes to cut out after about 20 secs.. obs having a heat related issue.. Did i just not put it back right and the cpu/heatsink is sitting wrong or something? or is this a fk piece of hardware.

I have question my laptop was the same model of HP. I just wanted to clean cpu fun and I assembled myself and I did all think like this video but problem is now my laptop doesnt power up. I remember when I was open the laptop I took ribbon cabel really hard which is under power button. Is it possible reason?
Can you please recommend me places where I can buy replacement heatsinks for laptops? I have the HP Pavilion dv6-4007TX. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Thank you very much, i just reassembled it.. I havent switched the fan yet.. i just wanted to try if i will be able... now I need to purchase a new fan.. the problem is that inside my notebook on my old fan it is written: REPLACE WITH HP SPARE 518435-001
but when i searched for my model on HP Part surfer I found 514349-001 as aporopriate spare. Now i dont know which to order... the second one seems like newer part, and it is also much cheaper. but...
i have black screen of death and could this be the reason? all i can say is when i press the power bottun it's only show a light black screen and nothing else but after a 1-24 hours it works fine again.
@Dawlatshahy It is thermal paste, which goes on top of the cpu to help transfer heat to the heatsink. I usually use Arctic Cooling MX-2 paste, but any decent paste, like arctic-silver 5 will do. Just search ebay for thermal paste, and you'll find some, but read reviews of the paste in question, some are MUCH better than others. And remember to clean off all traces of the previous paste on the CPU & Heatsink before applying new paste. And DON'T spread it as in the video, this causes air bubbles!
@mindrust8 well it depends on what model you have and how you use it... In my opinion laptop's nemesis is HEAT! keep your laptops kool and it will last you 5 years easy!
after i dismantled this laptop why is it that everytime i insert a dvd it makes a rattling and loud noise, it didnt use to happen, what have i done wrong
Hey thanks alot for the video. This morning my Hp dv6 2120 TX notebook broke as BIOs detected cooling fan problem error code:902

thanks for the vid it gonna help me no end and by this point what can i lose.. it is a big deal to undertake still, oh well here goes.I'll let you know how it went..
i own the very same dv6 on this video and the gpu overheating (and cpu some) also making unreasonable sound. So i went down to the HP repair service and they just charged me with most unreasonable price, say like 200$ or something. They said they would practicly do the very same thing on this video. so;
is there any tool like say a vacuum cleaner suitable for this ? there is no way i'm gonna dismantle it all the way down and put it back together alright. i'm not that confident.
Hi, I'm hoping you can help me. Before taking apart my laptop it was fully functional, I wanted to clean the fan because it had been two years. After following your video tutorial to get to the fan, cleaning it up, and putting it back together, it had a problem. After I would click "start windows normally" a few seconds later it would shut down. I am typing this message on another computer. I have tried resetting it and most of those tricks but nothing has worked. Do you know what's wrong?
@tobi90806 same problem with me PLEASE HELP! Its not the first time i take it apart, the previous times it worked perfectly after cleaning, this time it doesnt,... :(
Tnx for informative video...i just got one more question...i have dv6 2090eg, does it realy support 2 HDD? ive found no place for the second one :) From DV6 HP Manual: Supports all Serial ATA (SATA) 9.5-mm, 6.35-cm (2.50-inch) hard drives Supports up to 2 hard drives Support for HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection Supports the following drives: ■ 500-GB, 7200-rpm ■ 500-GB, 5400-rpm ■ 320-GB, 7200-rpm ■ 320-GB, 5400-rpm ■ 250-GB, 7200-rpm ■ 250-GB, 5400-rpm Big tnx in advance!!!
Is there a more detailed, walkthrough version of this video? I'm kind of frightened that I will mess up along the way with a video fast paced like this xD I have to clean out the fan and didn't realize how much I have to go through just to get to it.
@DaHackMasta007 Sorry I do not have a slower video. It is very easy to break fragile connectors that are expensive to replace. I highly recommend not working on your laptop and having an experienced tech clean or replace the fan for you.
Holey mother of god thats alot ... i had a shity compac laptop for a long time it was so simple to take apart i became a pro ... but that is so complicated ... WHY!!!! looks like i need to find myself a pro hehe
ahm.... do you think i could damage the fan if i use a vacuum cleaner (USB or small vacuum cleaner) to suck the dust out? I have an HP pavilion dv6 (2090eg) model... its only a year old and its hot after 20 min...
@atph120890 The fan can be damaged by spinning out of control and I do not think you would be able to see what happens to the fan during the process of using a vacuum. You may be able to hold the fan in place using a paper clip or something though. I would not recommend experimenting on your laptop. I would say take it apart and clean the dust or have someone that is experienced clean it for you.
Thankyou Thankyou I cant thank you enough for your video my daughters dv6 fan was noisey and needed replacement your video made it possible to do I was nervous when I turned it back on but no need worked straight up Great Work
@FastVideoTech I'm an impatient person i'm afraid and i decided to go ahead with this regardless, your video despite being very quick was very helpful and i followed it bit by bit by pausing it all the time. You taught me a hell of a lot just by this one video and i then proceeded to re assemble it on my own, and succeeded, it's just like lego :D thankyou so much for this video, i'm going to like it because i can now play games without it overheating.
thank you very much for this video. You helped me to get inside the fan for cleaning it. There was a lot of dust. It was my first time but it went well because of your video. Perfect!
Bro, reallt thxs.!! theres some parts cables and screws that i didnt take like you, and it worked fne, i was stucked in the part of the black conector of the screen i think.. i pull him but in other direction not up. Thxs it was very usefull this video :D
I think the main issue with this kind of DV6s, wich i also have, are the small amount of cooling holes under the laptop, also the uneven placement of the heat sink or whatever it is. By looking at a Dell for instance, it's much thinner, but makes almost no noise at all...how is that possible? Stupid HP.
Hey I was thinking of upgrading my CPU for this laptop from the intel core i3 m 350 @ 2.27GHz to an intel core i7, but I am unsure of which i7 I would have to purchase, can you tell me what one I need to buy please? I would like a quad core one please :)
Thx for the video. I have a DV6 that heats up very fast and was wondering if the "vent" at the bottom, on the left rear side of the laptop where the fan is, is supposed to be open. Mine appears to be covered by a rubber flap or covering. It's hard to tell from your video if that really is a vent. Would love to hear from others if theirs also seems to be covered up.
@JMjhonmarJM You can clean the inside of the fan and I have even seen people add grease to the inside and replace ball bearings. Compressed air is good to use as long as you don't let the fan spin out of control as that can damage the fan. I would recommend replacing the fan because of the length of time and effort that it takes to get to the fan. It needs to be done right the 1st time since I do this professionally.
thank you so much for this video because i had this noise myy fan was making and it was slowing and overheating the computer up to the point where it would just freeze. luckily i didnt have to replace it, i just had to clean the part where it spins and now its as good as new. like i said before THANK YOU
@FastVideoTech I have one more question. Say if my fan were to stop working completely to the point i have to replace it. Where could i order a new fan for a model 2166dx?
@alexmun133 I would recommend 1st checking the part number of the fan and making sure you buy the correct one. Searching Google and Ebay for the fan would be a good place to start.
@nate42nd My computer shop is in Chester county Pennsylvania. We are located at 2222 Baltimore Pike. Oxford, PA 19363. Feel free to contact me as I have laptops shipped here as well.
Astounding that you have to go to this much trouble to replace a fan. I have this exact same model (it appears) and the fan isn't spinning. Laptops are nice. I have used this for 18 months constantly. I just wonder if this is really the only way. HP should make covers for all major components. I can't believe this is what they make you go through. I build and fix desktops all day and would have a hard time with this.
is there a way to clean the fan without disassembly every single thing on the pc? mine is starting to make noise, so..(i got the 2056el version) thank you so much.
@Maldetto88 Some models of laptops are easier than others to clean but unfortunately this model's design makes it very difficult to reach the fan and clean out the dust. This is not something i would recommend trying if you have never taken apart a laptop before. Also I would say just replace the fan if you do end up going through all the trouble to remove it & clean it. This is not a very expensive replacement at my shop, so having me replace the fan for you is always an option as well.
@spriggsey I sell Hard Drives at my computer shop but you can buy them online on many websites. I would start with newegg, if you need to buy a laptop Hard Drive online.
I am guessing you changed the CPU. I am trying to do the same thing, i have the same model DV6 (2088dx) but can not seem to find any processor thatll work with the mainboard. Hell, the only information i can get about the mainboard is that its a quanta 3536. Can you tell me what you put in and the type of mainboard it is?
@mariusndini I replaced the Heat Sink and Cooling Fan in this video because the fan was starting to fail. Fortunately the processor was working just fine so there was no need to remove or replace it. Are you having issues with your processor? I don't believe that there are many upgrade possibilities when it comes to the processor. The Motherboard's HP part number is located on a white sticker on the motherboard near or under the RAM memory. Let me know if I can be of any help.
@FastVideoTech No the processor is working just as well as it did the day I bought (as far as i can tell anyway). it would just be nice to get something thats more up to date then the ones in ours. obviously we have maxed out ur ram for the motherboard and replacing the HD can only do so much. I was just curious mostly but i guess it works fine the way it is.
Wow, that's a lot of work! More than I thought. Good thing I watched this video. There's no way I'm doing this now. Gonna just buy a portable laptop cooler.
SquireIsHere 5 days ago
Advice for people using this laptop (like I do).
1. Buy a can of compressed air and clean out the vents and fan 3 times a month.
2. Buy a portable laptop cooler. Yes... it works. When playing games, my cores max around 55 Celsius.

My laptop got the same problem..
I tried removing the fan and applied grease(as i thought the noise was due to friction)
But it don't bring a change, so I understood tht the noise is because of the failure of fan brushes.
I decided to change the heat sync..
Can u say me the pricing of it???

You may be able to hold the fan in place using a paper clip or something though. I would not recommend experimenting on your laptop. I would say take it apart and clean the dust or have someone that is experienced clean it for you.

Should i do this, i mean i have decent screw drivers etc and i'm ok with electronics and computers but how will i know how to put it back together?
ForTheSwarmTV 9 months ago
@ForTheSwarmTV I cannot recommend that you work on your laptop. This video makes things look easy. One mistake could be very expensive.
FastVideoTech 9 months ago
@FastVideoTech I'm an impatient person i'm afraid and i decided to go ahead with this regardless, your video despite being very quick was very helpful and i followed it bit by bit by pausing it all the time. You taught me a hell of a lot just by this one video and i then proceeded to re assemble it on my own, and succeeded, it's just like lego :D thankyou so much for this video, i'm going to like it because i can now play games without it overheating.

Hey, bit of a weird question - but what genre of music is this? And if possible, may I have the track names please?
Many thanks!

thank you very much for this video. You helped me to get inside the fan for cleaning it. There was a lot of dust. It was my first time but it went well because of your video. Perfect!

@Scapatarda I do believe that is the dial up modem.

where is the bluetooth sensor found? or where is it connected?

I think the main issue with this kind of DV6s, wich i also have, are the small amount of cooling holes under the laptop, also the uneven placement of the heat sink or whatever it is. By looking at a Dell for instance, it's much thinner, but makes almost no noise at all...how is that possible? Stupid HP.

Hey I was thinking of upgrading my CPU for this laptop from the intel core i3 m 350 @ 2.27GHz to an intel core i7, but I am unsure of which i7 I would have to purchase, can you tell me what one I need to buy please? I would like a quad core one please :)
MiiGHTYM4Nv2 10 months ago
which model ofcpu fun i have to buy?
frankly187 11 months ago
@frankly187 You should be able to find an HP Part number on the fan or heat sink. You can use the HP Part number to find a fan to order.
FastVideoTech 11 months ago
Thx for the video. I have a DV6 that heats up very fast and was wondering if the "vent" at the bottom, on the left rear side of the laptop where the fan is, is supposed to be open. Mine appears to be covered by a rubber flap or covering. It's hard to tell from your video if that really is a vent. Would love to hear from others if theirs also seems to be covered up.

can you disassemble the fan to clean it inside? I mean you just changed the whole thing.. or it's not possible.. can i use compressed air sprayer?
JMjhonmarJM 11 months ago

Where could i order a new fan for a model 2166dx?
alexmun133 11 months ago
@alexmun133 I would recommend 1st checking the part number of the fan and making sure you buy the correct one. Searching Google and Ebay for the fan would be a good place to start.

@FastVideoTech thank you

You have to COMPLETELY disassemble it to replace a FAN! My GOD. This is terrible. Good video. I hope it's not accurate.

Maldetto88 1 year ago
@Maldetto88 Some models of laptops are easier than others to clean but unfortunately this model's design makes it very difficult to reach the fan and clean out the dust. This is not something i would recommend trying if you have never taken apart a laptop before. Also I would say just replace the fan if you do end up going through all the trouble to remove it & clean it. This is not a very expensive replacement at my shop, so having me replace the fan for you is always an option as well.

how did you get replacements. im looking for a hdd replacement :)

@spriggsey I sell Hard Drives at my computer shop but you can buy them online on many websites. I would start with newegg, if you need to buy a laptop Hard Drive online.

@XzeferoxEX There is no place to install a 2nd Hard Drive in this model. Unless you are using a USB Hard Drive.

I am guessing you changed the CPU. I am trying to do the same thing, i have the same model DV6 (2088dx) but can not seem to find any processor thatll work with the mainboard. Hell, the only information i can get about the mainboard is that its a quanta 3536. Can you tell me what you put in and the type of mainboard it is?
also what did you upgrade to?
mariusndini 1 year ago
@mariusndini I replaced the Heat Sink and Cooling Fan in this video because the fan was starting to fail. Fortunately the processor was working just fine so there was no need to remove or replace it. Are you having issues with your processor? I don't believe that there are many upgrade possibilities when it comes to the processor. The Motherboard's HP part number is located on a white sticker on the motherboard near or under the RAM memory. Let me know if I can be of any help.
FastVideoTech 1 year ago
@FastVideoTech No the processor is working just as well as it did the day I bought (as far as i can tell anyway). it would just be nice to get something thats more up to date then the ones in ours. obviously we have maxed out ur ram for the motherboard and replacing the HD can only do so much. I was just curious mostly but i guess it works fine the way it is.
thanks.
