Actually the whole coffee suing thing was really McDonald's fault. I know it sounds dumb and I personally think the woman should have never even sued them in the first place. Anyway the lawyers for McDonalds pretty much were dooshbags through the whole trial...treated the jury like shit, the plaintiff, the judge, the whole process. So they pretty much handed this woman a case on a silver platter and they had to fork over 10mil because of it.

Finally, (and I'm so sorry for flooding this place with my opinions) one should see the heart of the issue. What are the basis that giant companies are being sued? Because of the cost of 'repairing' the victim, plus how much time they'll be unpaid, as they are off work.

As such, the easiest way to counter this issue is a change in politics. It is hard to sew for damages (for example) if a person's med-care is already paid for, and their job covers their medical leave.

As a bit of a side thing, there IS one large problem with the judicial system. People are getting injured, and as such, are hoping to make ample amounts of money before they even go to court. They don't want to go to court, they want to be bribed, in order to make more money; their lawyers will probably end up mooching most of their courtroom winnings off them anyway. McDonalds also doesn't want to go to court, as they'd end up losing more money there. Which is why they, too, will want to bribe.

I am sure there are two causes of all this sewing. First, the mentality of the "American Dream". Basically, every American has this mentality that they can find ways of getting rich with as little effort as possible. As such, they find sewing to be the easiest way of making money. Mind you, as George Carlin put it, "it's called the American Dream, because you have to be asleep to believe it."

2 problems with that.

1. the cup lid was faulty or the workers were incompetent in putting it on causing the spill.

2. the coffee was way beyond scolding. like she had flesh burned off.

i think it's a case by case situation.

if a company is negligible then it should compensate for injury.

but so many people sue for stupid reasons.

that type of action detracts from those who deserve to be sued.
