  • The 109 pilot's used to call this the pneumatic hammer. Because it caused the whole aircraft to shake when fired.

  • I read one report from german pilot where he with his Me-262 had "burned" sherman whit 2 sec fireing and with 30mm HE shells, including it had four 30mm cannons with fast fire rate...burned - I mean destroyed ;)

  • Oh, look! A firecracker! =)

  • great video, thank you. Gonna require lots of bondo for that one! : )

  • nice to see the germans use superslowmotion way ahead for its time !!!!!!

  • @MrAapenkind Actually it is the British using a German weapon...

  • @MrAapenkind Actually they did pioneer that - but at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

  • interesting, first time ive seen the close up and info of damge from that test. wing would have folded up instantly with in flight stresses.

  • Mauser concluded 3-4 direct HEI hits would to destroy a B-17

Mk 101 series was copied as Aden and GIAT.

The MK108 air combat cannon is much less powerful than MK101/3 (electric firing) MK 108 fires 30x90RB (505 m/sec muzzle velocity), muzzle energy= 42 kJ

    The Flak 38, MK 101 & MK 103 fire 30x184B muzzle velocity 800-960 m/s & 146-163 kJ.

    Bushmaster= 30x173= 1040 m/s & 195kJ

    New Mauser30= 30x173= 1300 m/s & 195kJ

    Most powerful 30mm? Czech Kreighoffer MK303-based M53 AA- 30x210 1000+ m/s & 217 kJ!

  • those guns Packed ALOT of destruction they had a fire rate of 650 rounds/min close to that of the 750–850 rounds a min that the American 50 Cals had!!! but the 109 whit the 30mm cannon only had 60 rounds so they would go fast but when u hit something they sure felt it!

  • wow! kind of like a deadly jackhammer . . . thanks : )

  • big gun

  • MK108: one shot, one kill. Assuming you can hit anything with the 30 or so rounds you have.

  • @Me109G10Gustav

The Bf-109 carried 65 rounds of ammunition for the 30mm cannon. Enough for 7 seconds of sustained fire. Not a lot, but more than 30. 30 rounds of ammunition is more like what you'd typically find in a Russian Yak that was armed with a large caliber cannon, like their 37mm or 45mm cannons.

  • @TheNewCommissar but they were never fired full-auto.

Always 1 shot or 3 shots per time. Look at the Ernst Rudel footage with a 70mm belly gun attached to his trusty Ju-88.

  • @SignoroIncognito You are missing the point. The German fighter pilots were encouraged to fire the Mk 108 in short bursts too. I was simply correcting his claim that it only had 30 rounds of ammo. Also, Rudel flew a Stuka that had 37mm cannons under its wings. On top of that, you do realize that for every air machine gun or cannon, endurance is judged by rounds of ammo, and how many seconds of sustained fire, right? The Bf-109's 65 rounds gave it a 7 second endurance for the Mk 108.

  • @TheNewCommissar

    And also a 70mm under-fuselage cannon.

Yes I am well aware having field stripped many a Mauser. They are very simple guns- even less complicated than the MG3

  • @SignoroIncognito Well, Rudel only flew Ju-87 Stukas, both dive bombing and anti-tank variants, and Fw-190Fs. There is no variant of Stuka, and no variant of Fw-190 that was armed with any cannon larger than the 37mm cannon (Ju-87G-1 with two 37mm guns). You must be confusing Rudel with a Hs-129 pilot. The Hs-129B-3 carried a 75mm cannon in a gunpod under its belly. Rudel never flew one.

  • @TheNewCommissar yes- you are correct- I am mixing the two up. WW2 history is not my strength as can be seen.

But I do know guns- and the Mauser electric M101/108Aden is very simple- the major problem was material shortages and shell link breakages on severe aerobatic maneuver. This was remedied and became very reliable as the MK213 maschinen-kanone.

The Borsig Borde-kanone.BK 3,7, BK 5 and BK 7,5 had major issues with rotary magazine as they were based on the same mm PAK and KWK.

  • @TheNewCommissar WOW..TRY IT IN SPACES. MAYBE WE CAN READ IT BETTER.

  • @TheNewCommissar The Russian guns also had horrible recoil and even caused damage to the engine. The rate of fire was lower though. 65 rounds lasted 7 seconds - 30 lasted maybe 15 seconds(?). Even so, I feel it would be much easier to place a round on target with the Mk-108 :)

  • @RomanatorII the thing is with HE rounds of this size you can be sure you will only need ONE shot on a fighter and a few more on a bomber

  • @Buemmo They say that you need only three or four well aimed 30mm cannon shells on a B-17 to bring it down. Scary that more bombers weren't lost really when you see stats like that

  • It'll buff out

  • Imagine if the spit was in a sharp turn when it was hit. The wing would have been ripped clean off

  • gosh.

  • excelente video!!!
