The most used subliminal message in everything from cartoons to porn are the circle with an "A" through it (Anarchy) and an American flag ripped or separated in the longitudinal fashion.
Wow! I'm not surprised by the message, just that Americans don't seem to question how they've become one of the most patriotic cultures in the world or how they got a reputation for wanting to take over the world. This is not an isolated incident, people.
so here's the REAL story. this was animated in Japan. the FCC wanted to know what the hell the deal was. they went to the DIC buliding in Burbank CA. Nothing. Then, a TV Guide interviewer in Japan happened upon "It is a Japanese custom to put single-frame shots into cartoons...wanted to put in the most hyper-American image..." said the president of the animation studio. So that's it. (Source: a book called Biggest Secrets by William Poundstone)
First of all..why would you buy an Alf DVD set? LOL. No jk..but what purpose would it serve if they posted that? I mean do the creators of alf make money people seeing a USA flag/promotion? I mean subliminal messages are wrong but I'm just wondering.
this was actually exposed back in the 80s after the episode aired. Now we need to find the other subliminal clip that had a shot of Alf's fridge which featured a dead Garfield and beer bottles. Back then both shots were supposedly removed from the tv versions. Glad to see it still present on the dvd
ALF (and ALFTales) was a weekly Saturday morning cartoon that aired on NBC (same network as the live action series). It came on after The Smurfs IIRC.

I remember that TV Guide mentioned this in a short article, but I had remembered it as appearing in the 80s version of Mighty Mouse.

You might want to change your description a bit.
