I had an opportunity, or rather the privilege, of seeing my drumming hero Gene Krupa twice, and the chance to speak with him for about 10 minutes, at Detroit's famous Baker's Keyboard Lounge around 1963-64. I was about 17 years old. Sweet man. Visited with my Mom and me. Put on a great performance with his quartet. Pure classic.
Krupa got busted for pot in the 40's. This scene is his big comeback with Tommy Dorsey, hence the heckling jerks shouting out "Hey Gene, got a reefer?"...etc.
Thanks so much for posting the finale of "The Gene Krupa Story"! This has been a favorite film of mine since I first saw it at age seven in 1959. Any chance of posting the opening credits, like from the time the Columbia logo comes on to Sal walking down the street carrying his new drums home?
Even though Gene is actually playing on the soundtrack Sal does an amazing job of not only matching his movements to the track ( not an easy thing to do ) but he gets Gene's body and facial mannerisms down as well. Gene had a distinctive style and Sal captured it perfectly. However no professional drummer would go on stage with only two drumsticks for just the reason shown. Though i'm sure that was just added movie drama not what really happened. Shelly Manne does a great job as Davey Tough.
