Nukes were last by the US against the Japanese at the close of WW2. The necessity of this action has become open to much debate, as has many other aspects of that era. Even so, neither the US, nor Israel has an offensive policy of threats backed by nuclear weapons. Iran, on the other hand, will have a nuke just as soon as it has manufactured the enriched Uranium, and has an offensive policy to apply it to. So far, the Iranians have not indicated otherwise.

The mistake made was not to put Afghanistan and Iraq under a 99 year direct administration contract. This would have given sufficient time for a national administration and institutions to be properly established. The accusation of imperialism would have been levelled of course, but this could have been circumvented by an administration contract to a coalition of western powers. The EU and US in this instance. Iran's nuke days are rapidly coming to an end.

The video "Iraqi MPs speak out about occupation" gives some good insight into how the Iraqis are looking at this, and they have even more reasons to oppose it than we do. F'in' Bush keeps playing this off as accommodating the Iraqis, while the "agreement" and the rhetoric are just Bush doing what Bush does.

If this is the outcome to be avoided, Americans had better get Congress in charge of what they are supposed to have authority over. The defence budget being one of them. Furthermore, the Iraqis can get on with paying for their own government, its protection, the armed forces and police including liberation reparations to the coalition governments' taxpayers.
