i like the sound of your sharp and accurate axe. good job you have 800 trees. Have you heard about the difference between tearing with a saw or slicing with an axe. i like the film and your comments are great. great advice. I prune olive trees in south of spain
hello about two years ago i purchased a cloned olive tree but it was like a long stem it looks very thin and seems not to hold itself up right properly what can i do>
Just started pruning I find that large seceteer, I don't know if thats spelt correctly, are good and a crescent shaped saw for bigger branches , however a small axe is used alot where we grow our olives.
@casatyr I'm in Extremadura, Cáceres, not had the finca long and when I got it it hadn't been worked for a few years so I've got some catching up to do, just learning on the job and from books, and what the locals tell me.
When the trees are hard pruned (every 4 years here) we have professionals come in who use a saw + a hatchet. In our area, when you prune the suckers, the locals always use a hatchet, just like we did. Maybe people do it differently in different places.
some advice fellow olive tree care taker. i write from greece. we know the three. you use the wrong tools. the axe it too much force. you hearting the trees you love. you buy a 25cm hand saw (fast cutter).and a pruner. look at bahko. alsol. when cutting make sure you don't leave a "tooth". only clean cuts to let the tree cover the wound asap. no nicks and cuts on the tree. keep it healthy. good luck.
know how you feel, just been through this with 750 in the clare valley, south australia. Hardest job ever

@Artbag1 Thanks for the comments! The professional guys here use the crescent shaped saw too for big branches. Where do you grow your olives?
