i think red skull aka hidra, was frist of all killed, second using the power from one of the 9 relms aka planets . like say there was 10 relms but one got destroyed because it was to powerfull . long story short all of them relat together.

I reckon that the cosmic cube transported Red Skull to Asgard because the universe appears above his head, it looks like he was taken somewhere, it could be the explanation to how Thor gets back, with the power from the cube connecting them all

I'm guessing that Howard Stark (Tony Stark's father) gave it to SHIELD because according to Nick Fury "He was a founding member of SHIELD" and they asked Dr. Selvig to research on it because they couldn't find a way to tap into it and unfortunately, Loki happened to be there and told the Doctor to work on it, which is how he got it in the avengers movie.

Legend has it the cube could grant unlimited power to whoever learns to tap it's power. It's the kind of power that shaters dimensions, causes big bangs, and rips holes in the fabric of time and space. Event Harizon or a Black Hole spawned in a Hadron collider type shit...well not exactly but it's a big deal. Too big for Captain America
