  • Truly amazing what horses put up with. And the only reason why they horse is moving off so nicely is because he has spurs to keep him going! Dressage should be about training and challenge. Not about winning, and doing whatever it takes it win. To many people ride behind the verticle, and it drives me nuts. In lower levels you are actually supposed to have your horse slightly above the verticle! Ugh, why cant it always be like that?

  • horrible and shameful! Sorry to all horses for this kind of riding!

    Go for species-appropriate husbandry!

  • Why are top riders taking such horrible shortcuts? It just makes them look horrible. They should be doing it the RIGHT way and showing off their riding ability.

    STOPPT ROLLKUR !!!!!

  • Why are there people that like this video?!?! Can't they see how the horse suffers?! There are more negative aspects about hyperflexion than postitive! SO STOP DOING THIS SHIT!!

  • A cruel and boring life for these noble creatures.

  • Even without showing his blue tongue that poor horse looks insanely uncomfortable! Poor thing! :(

  • Dear god that looks awful! How could someone do this to their horse.Sure you are an Olympic rider, but does that mean you have to belittle your horse and beat them down BEFORE you even go into the ring! I would never do something like this to my horse! Though he is a Spanish breed of horse harsh methods like this one are still used. Every time I ride my horse INCLUDING when I show I politely ask him to do something. I say please and thank you. What everyone thought was insane I ride bareback

  • What kind of disconnect must there be in people's minds, that they can think for a moment that this is natural movement?!

  • Simply disgusting... If he loved horses, he wouldn't be doing this!

  • Is this rider aware of what he is doing?

  • i dnt use bits

  • Look at edward gal..............he dose not use Rollkur and he has the highest dressage score in the WORLD.....that just shows how stupid this method is ..............i wouldn`t even call this a method. it is just over powering the horse with a strong bit!!!!!!

  • @3dayeventer101 edward does use rollkur as he was a pupil of of anky and seif and along with hans peter. I have been lucky enough to go to ankys, and over holland, belgium. its all rollkur. and i see nothing wrong with it. neno classical, ....get with the times ppl

  • @robrob125 If you see nothing wrong with Rollkur then you're an idiot.

  • @robrob125 did you just say "get with the times"?!? the times are all about what is popular at the moment, Not what is proven to make a healthy and happy athletic horse. i ride against the times, and the horses i ride coudnt be happier. French Classical dressage goes back to dressages roots, before it was about competitions, but about the horse. the end goal is to have the most willing responsive horse possible, able to do anything through nothing more than thoughts and intentions. its possible.

  • i think the most humane moment in this entire video is at 7:04, when you see one of the other riders patting/rewarding her horses

you rarely see that nowadays, regardless of the level

  • @StephanieJuliette i give my horse the best treatment! :)

  • Pardon my ignorance as I've never seen anything like this done intentionally before but do they perform entire tests like this or is it just in the warm-up? I also have heard that the jumper people do this too.

  • Perhaps if the idiot rider didn't have his hands in his lap the entire time, cranking the poor horse's head down, he could naturally raise his neck, back and poll and have a more pleasant ride. It's people like this that need to be displayed to the public so we can know what NOT to watch during major equestrian events. This is ridiculous and appalling...

    Aanstellers.

  • heck! this isnt dressage! dressage is about taking less and doing more! not using more harsher bits, spurs, and whips to make the horse do what u want.... i bet if these people used those tools as tools and not as weapons to force the horse to do it, them and there horses will be a LOT happier!!!

  • the horse is a proud animal, dont make him bow his head

  • I think it's so sad to see how far we've strayed from the actual purposes of dressage, and all riding for that matter.

This is a great example of how ignorant and greedy mankind is.

  • It's amazing how much expression and cadence the horse manages to show despite having his chin strapped to his chest. Imagine how much more impressive he would be if ridden properly up and out into the contact!

  • What an asshole!

  • this guy should not be riding a horse. He should have someone force his head down, make him run with a heavy backpack on, while spurring him. this is cruel. and dressage is supposed to help the horse?

  • This makes me want to cry and yank that these riders off these horses' back with a vengeance.

  • There is something extremely wrong and disgusting about this. It should definitely be banned. You need to earn your right to be able to ride and have such a beautiful partnership with horses, and he has definitely lost it! This is everything BUT beautiful. It's wrong. Like this if you agree.

  • This is absolutely disgusting! He stops, looks at the horses tongue then carries on with his torture, choking the poor beastie!! He doesn't care about this horses welfare as long as he looks good. This is not warming up, but breaking the horse down into submission!! And to think I was going to start dressage, but not after seeing this....I wouldnt put my horses thru this

  • @julesvtr i understand how you feel, although, dont give up on dressage completely. look into French Classical dressage (my favorite trainers are Dominique Barbier and Jill McCrae). it is dressage as it was meant to be. no force, no pain. it looks scary because we ride in a double and with two whips, but we keep the curb loose and the goal is to need nothing. the purpose is to be able to sit atop your horse and do anything you want, with only your thoughts. it is possible, and oh so beautiful.

  • animal abouse when it comes to horses are obviously legal...

  • This stupid talentless woman should be forbidden to ever come near a horse again. She is abusing this horse! Nobody there had the backbone to say something? I used to have nothing but respect for Patrik Kittel. He is just as bad as that other bloody foot who treat these horses as a means to an end. End Rollkur now! It is equine torture.

  • The man apparently has had children's books where horse so wound up trotting across the field !

  • that is disgusting! he obviously has no concern for the horse's well-being. People like that should be tied with their heads down and forced to run in circles until THEIR tongues turn blue!

  • this is disgusting right, I ride a horse and I know they don't like this type of bits, and it doesn't look nice when a horse has his nose in his chest. Poor horse! For such a long time! It's so unnatural!

  • @purplejumpergirl

"It's funny how the olympic riders do it because they know it doesnt hurt, yet people like you who has NEVER been to the olympics think its cruel"

Also, if they let a dipshit like you compete in the Olympics, I will quit riding forever.

And if you've only "watched" the Olympics, GTFO. You realize they broadcast it on television, right?

  • @purplejumpergirl

Okay, how about this. On the point of the blue tongue alone. Have you ever

wrapped a rubber band around your wrist until your hand turned blue? I'd bet you never have. Can you imagine the discomfort? What if someone threatened you with physical violence or discipline if you didn't endure it?

Completely cutting off circulation to the point where an appendage is severely discolored is common-sense evidence that something is very, very wrong.

  • disgusting >:( why would that rider or anyone think that that is beautiful??? ever since I was little, I have wanted to ride at this level but if this is what it has turned into? then I want NOTHING to do with it. there is no harmony or bond there, it is simply a monster forcing an animal to do whatever the monster wants.

  • @TheCrazyHorseLady i feel the same way about competitive dressage. however, look up French Classical dressage, it is dressage as it was meant to be. no forcing, no pain. spend a minute and google Dominique Barbier, the man changed my life. I now ride under his Protege, Jill McCrae. I can no longer watch the german style dressage that I used to admire, because now i see the pain in the horses eyes, and i know things can be better.

  • Watching this video makes me sick. How can someone ride a horse with his nose stuck to his chest and his eyes looking at the ground? This horse looks exhausted and in pain. It is plain ugly and abusive! This is poor riding no matter what level this rider is at. What a shame this was allowed in upper level dressage especially at the world games. I wish this horse taught this guy a lesson by bucking him clean off his back so he landed on his skinny little ass.

  • what happened to the beauty of upper level dressage?

  • @TheBlondiediva

you are reading my mind... dressage is no longer a dance but just a fight :((( it makes me so sad.... K.

  • He looks like he's going to hit his nose with his knee at the canter, poor horse. These beautiful creatures give us all their trust, and some people do this in return. How sick...

  • You can't even see the space between the head and the neck!

  • Absolutely disgusting.

The horse's movement looks fake, and the front and hind end are completely unconnected..

    That is not dressage.

  • DAS IST EINE SCHANDE !!!

  • typisch patrick kittel

  • I feel like crying. How can this possibly be considered dressage? The horse looks so tense and uncomfortable. And the rider is obviously a completely ignorant douche bag.

  • That asshole in the video is Patrik Kittel. He deserve to be hit by a bus,.... at least 3 of them. Watching this video made me really sad :(

  • bloody so called professionals they couldn't ride a bike let alone a horse. idiots they should spend all thier cash on training correctly,

  • blood so called professionals they couldn't ride a bike let alone a horse. idiots they should spend all there cash on training correctly,

  • why is nobody saying anything??

there are so many people around the arena and nobody objects??

    this is disgusting me

such a shame, its such a beautiful horse :(

hamma eh so was soll sich schäämen !"

alle beobachten ihm aberkeiner sagt etwas

  • OMG. i have never actually seen somebody ride in such a tight hyperflexsion position for so long. i was uncomfortable just watching that. I don't even see the benifit of him doing that. i mean what did that achieve for him.

  • there are a lot of people standing around and watching. why don't they speak up and say something????

  • @powerpussydeluxe Bystanders are likely so used to seeing it and hearing from people using the method that it's "not painful" and other nonsense that they don't care or don't say anything anymore.

  • This not only causes vertebrae problems, also, it cuts off oxygen. this is not right. this man should die in a hole

  • And how is the horse meant to see where it is going properly

and it is so obvious, that even my friend that hates horses, and knows nothing about the head carriage and stuff, thinks it it cruel and unnatural

  • did the rider just stop to push his tongue back into his mouth? Oo why does nobody say anything? as a rider, I would always stop by and say 'be aware of what you do.' and I even did it one time but the rider tried to appear not having heard it.

*sorry for my bad english* o:

  • die rechnung von seinen abreitmethoden hat er jetzt bekommen. platz 42 in kentucky.armselig!

  • unfortunately he's not the only one who rides in the hyperflexion position. This methode is cruel and should be forbidden!!

  • @purplejumpergirl Riding for a 1,000 years still wouldnt make this right.

  • @purplejumpergirl Um no, you even said "its just uncomfortable" What is your definition of that word? Its usually something painful. Long term effects of this are very painful. Why do you need to pull his head in like that? Its obviously extremely uncomfortable on the animal. People force 1000lb+ animals into a lot of things. Horses need a leader, and if you are a cruel one they dont really get to say no I need a new leader and leave. They are forced, and this is cruel.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm also curious- how much "warm up" does a "flight" animal need??

  • @purplejumpergirl it causes long-term damage to a horse's spine and neck. do the scientific research, please.

when you have control over a horse's head, they will eventually do what you want in a desperate attempt to ensure safety. they're not predators - they won't tear you apart for it. well, some will, but some won't, and those are the ones that are subjected to this.

and who cares how long they've been riding? mexican horse tripping has gone on for years and years and it's still wrong.

  • take them, first of all, the Kandare (curb) away!

  • @purplejumpergirl

    Wrong.

  • FUCK YOU ASSHOLE

  • back hten nobody ever thught it was cruel- pure ignorance and false information given by riders- yet science proves it has bad medical effects on the horses but nobody listens and people still use the method in competition and always win

  • Did no one say anything to him...?

  • @thexashes that's what i was thinking- we have all these people in the arena/stands just standing by?? Shoot- i've even approached people in the KMart/walmart/ whatever parking lot to say "could you please stop hitting your kid?"

Inaction is a form of condoning this behavior- I don't see what the point is? Shouldn't you train like you want to compete??

  • @jett888 I completely agree! It is just like condoning it. Just like what you said, you couldnt stand and watch someone beating a little kid, how can people watch this horse having his head being torn apart x.x ugh

  • I have no idea who this person is or who owns the horse, but this looks like a classic example of New Money + Flaming Ignorance. It usually makes for dangerous/cruel situations, whether it is in horses, boats, cars, etc..

The old, Masters must be rolling in their graves.

  • @pmarie2003 exactly right........ i agree.

  • Anky doing it too!!!! And most of the horses in there look tense!

  • @Wulfssam14 Do the words World Cup mean anything to you? Wouldn't you be tense thus make your horse tense at such an event?

  • can't believe that this is going on and that no one stops it...And I could hurl if I hear Anky say "And we horsepeople know, that if there is something a horse wont do...." christ....

  • this technique is unnatural and painful!!!!

  • If an animal's tongue turns blue, I am positive there is a problem with his oxygen supply. I don't see any need to torture an animal and I am not a peta person. Just seems reasonable that this is taking it too far. I always enjoyed watching dressage, but I will be watching a little closer now.

  • Follow the money! Dressage has got to be big business and good horses are very expensive, owners need to get them up and winning fast to make back their investment. This did not happen 30 years ago and if it did it was out of pure ignorance. We despised draw reins and head-sets. I can weep that so called :experts" in the field of dressage are not putting a stop to this AND the Humane Society needs to get on board here too, it is cruel and ugly to boot. And by the way the FEI has NOT opposed thi

  • the ability to train grand prix does not give a person the right to horse abuse.

come on ! if you are a good trainer you should not need to hurt the horse

  • other riders inthis video who have used hyperflexion are using this technique for short periods of say 10 seconds, the rider in question has been going for 10 minutes!!!

  • Blue tongue and many other unpleasant things could occur with ANYONE, who ride horses on more-or-less serious level. Better look for yourself.

  • You forget, that it is "asshole", as you say, who trained Scandic (who is full of strength, flexibility and absolutely relaxed) and many other horses to Grand Prix level.

And you, opponents, what are your achievements? Where are your results? Where are horses, you train??

Show us yourself, show us your lessons, your "master-classes", so we could learn.

Without all this, your words are nothing.

  • @Majery Then what is the point of dressage? The point of spectators to the sport? The point of competition? If everyone who wants to watch, learn, form an opinion on it, speak about it, discuss it, must have trained X number of horses, won X number of medals and scored X percentage at X level before they can say whether or not they like something? You could even then argue what is the point of being human?

  • @Majery It is human nature, a human tendency, to judge something based on what limited information that we have, to catagorize it to make it easier to process. We cannot all have been priviledged enough to have given to us what this man has.

  • @Majery We are not all scientists, ballet dancers, Formula 1 race car drivers, or god forbid dressage rdiers competing on the world stage but many, many people will have an opinion on any number of things that the aforementioned "careers" will entail. Global Warming, for example. Not everyone is involved in the field whose work is formed around that topic, not everyone is an expert with all the knowledge and scientific evidence to back up claims...but almost everyone has an opinion on it.

  • @Majery Kittel made it a public right to have an opinion on his riding the minute he decided to do it on the world scale. And despite your protesting, people will form an opinion on it based on what little information they have. You don't have to be as "good" as this man to comment on his work. If that were the case, likely your own opinion on him (seemngly for) is also not valid.

  • @Majery Perhaps it is best you stop trying to stick up for him then because if you haven't produced countless horses, ridden to grand prix, won countless medals and represented your country in major competitions riding then why should anyone else take your opinion for a grain of salt?

BTW, have you been to any grass roots level competitions and listened to parents friends and riders commenting on others there?

  • @Majery I can tell you, some people will say a lot worse about people at that kind of thing based on 5 seconds of watching them ride than some of the stuff people say on here, and they are far less deserving of it.

  • @thecrazydolls Took the words out of my moooouth.

  • yep andwe aslo see yanky van grusome doing hwta she does best >:(

  • Not to be mean, BUT!

If you look in the background so you can see that they are not only

rider who rides at Scandic in rollkur. So I think they are wrong to interfere only on that particular rider. (Excuse my bad English I'm from Sweden)

  • It amazes me how American riders are training their horses in the classic style that European riders used to be famous for, while they have now fallen to this style of training. Reiner Klimke must be rolling in his grave.

  • This rider does not deserve to ride a horse.

  • i think one of the more haunting images on this is the rider halting to push the stallion's tongue back in his mouth...

  • @StephanieJuliette .... then looking around to see if anyone noticed what he did! he disgusts me!

  • its unbelieveble how it is possible that this guy is allowed to ride this dressagelevel.

respect for horse , corectly moves , he dont show things like that

  • uhuh gaaanz toll. dressur heute.

  • this is soooo cruel!!!!! :O :(

  • @ThePaintX ah. Ja das hatte ich da gelesen

  • These riders should be taken from their horses directly to jail.

Any idiot can see this is abusive and inhumane in the extreme. The sad thing is that these riders, like bleating sheep, followed a 'trend' they never stopped to evaluate. THAT is the real crime.

  • We can only hope that the negative "publicity" this abusive riding has generated will turn up the pressure on the FEI.

If you are interested in helping to end this kind of front-to-back riding and reviving classical dressage, please consider visiting the new not-for-profit dressagerevolution-dot-com.

  • The mere fact that the horse is being forcefully put into this hyperflexed position has been deemed by the FEI, to be illegal, and will be sanctioned in future instances of such aggressive riding. Let's hope that the FEI backs this up with some action !!

  • The tongue is not blue. Shadowing gives the tongue a grey cast and you can barley tell the horse is a chestnut. At other points the tongue is perfectly pink and covered in saliva - which would not be possible if the horse were cruely overflexed. This is much ado about nothing.

"Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one."

-from Extraordinary Popular Delusions, and the Madness of Crowds

  • Irrati0nalExuberance- what do you mean by "the tongue is perfectly pink and covered in saliva - which would not be possible if the horse were cruely overflexed"?? This horse IS severely overflexed, that is a FACT. Have u even read the rulebook? Or any of the old masters of Equitation? Obviously not. You are uneducated yet pretending to be deep- very funny:-) Moron!

  • None of this looks comfortable to the horses. How anyone can defend this is beyond me. Excuse me while I go hug my horse now...I will be thinking of all the horses whose owners condone this.

  • I'd like to jam a bit in that asshole's mouth and hold it until his tongue turned blue... I am surprised nobody hauled his sorry ass of that horse.

  • this is torture... he should be banned!

  • Wie asozial man sein kann. Sowas sollte echt verboten werden.

    Ekelhaft !

  • It is never acceptable to use this training method, rollkur is cruel and harmful to the horse as well as to the sport of dressage. It reflects poorly on all of us that strive for true harmony with our horse. To think that this would work with horse that has a history of putting his tongue of the bit is foolish it would only encourage that behavior.

  • Anyone watching this video needs to understand the story behind the horse before commenting....the horse .. Scandic developed a habit of getting his tonge over the bit as a youngster ...this has contuinued in the first minutes of warm-up...this is just a habit nothing to do with bad riding ...Using Long Deep & Round is a specific training methodology developed By professionals it is used to develop the horse not hinder it...IT IS NOT CRUEL far from it...

  • @tillytaylor100 and you know that becauce? its developped by a profesional? oh well then, cigarettes arent harmful since doctors smoke too, right? to me this horse looks uncomfortable and a BLUE tongue isnt normal, it means there is no blood circulation... try to dance while you chin is strapped to your chest and then we´ll talk again, besides the vision of the horse is minored this way.

  • They never actually prove that the horses tongue is blue. He (the rider) says that the horse put its tongue over the bit. I have seen several horses do that before, some even on a loose rein. While being on top of the horse, it is near impossible that he could have noticed that the horses tongue was over the bit.

  • Did he ever stop cantering for more than a few strides apart from the beginning that is?! Hate Rollkur and it is inhumane and unfair to the horses that have to go through it just so they can look so called "pretty" Who knew that something so inhumane could be called pretty and amazing by people...

  • I will state right now that I am against hyperflexion used for extended periods of time. However; keep in mind that athletes stretch and overstretch more than they need to. Why? So it is easier to do whatever sport it is they do. Look at figure skaters- they are not 'suppose' to bend and flex in that way. Yet after YEARS of careful training and practice, they can. These horses are usually around 10 yr old and brought along slowly.

  • I suggest that every rider and judge read The Truth About Horses by Andrew McLean and realize that these methods are not only inhumane but totally unethical.Has any rider the right to cause a horse continual and inescapable pain in order to win a ribbon or trophy. This makes rodeo look positively kind,Lets hope PETA has not been invited to the warmup ring of the next World Cup.

  • While this guy seems to be the worst offender there are several cranked horses in that video. And what exactly is the blonde on the black horse doing? As for Parrelli and company - there was a clinic where I board. Heads cranked to the side, running horses in smal circles, whipping your arms up and down and then getting upset if the horse backs or rears. I'd back or rear if you did that to me. No, wait, I have opposable thumbs and I'm not as forgiving. I'd deck you.

  • this is disgusting it makes me feel sick he should be ashamed of himself and should never be aloud to compete again

  • Comment removed

  • So glad that the FEI has now opposed this technique!

  • @pix4434 In fact, if you look deeper into their discussions and events that are happening around it you will see tricking and cheating... Instead of forbidding it completely when it JUST started to be so (unfortunately) widespread, The FEI paid no attention, and was even continuing to "praise" Anky for her "work"... They simply RENAME this crime and say smth about "HARMONIOUS" flexion knowing that WITH 2 SEVERE BITS, WITH PURE FORCE AND PERSISTANCE IN DOING THIS horses ANYWAY HAVE NO CHOICE...

  • @pix4434 This Blue Tongue video is just the brightest episode captured in the most evident way, and after this huge wave of public anger and (FINALLY!) understanding and seeing the truth of "big" sport, the FEI NOW is just TRYING TO SAVE THE IMAGE... So on this wave of huge controvecy against it it is just making a visibility of making SOMETHING good for horse's REAL benefit...

  • @pix4434 Rename this cruelty does not mean to become opposed...

It's only "benefitual" for them - "champions" and "winners".

It's the only thing which means.

  • @pix4434 Of course not:)))) Renaming and making stupid ABSOLUTELY false comments like "horse willing for hyperflexion of the neck" can fool only too naive people...

  • @pix4434 and WHAT CHANGED?

  • Dressage riders have been winning using hyperflexion for upwards of 30 years now. It's ABOUT TIME the FEI got their heads out of their collective rear ends and started doing something about it. I welcome the day when riders look back on Werth, Uphoff and Anky and realize they helped establish a nightmarish and torturous existance for thousands of horses around the world by popularizing this so-called training method.

Anyone who has doubts, read Dr. Gerd Heuschman's book & study his DVD.

  • As of Feb. 9th FEI imposed sanctions against this!!!! YEAH!!!!! Thx to everyone who signed the petition that was presented and helped to get this done.

  • OH GOD!!! PLEASE DON"T INVOLVE PETA!!! or we will all have to turn our horses free and never put a piece of tack on them ever again, no matter how dedicated we are to our horses wellbeing!!

  • so would you rather this horses tounge go blue?

  • Where did I even suggest that? What did I say to make you think I am ok with that?

You think there is no space between cutting off circulation to a horses tongue, and not riding at all??

I am suggesting putting stronger pressure on FEI to enforce the rules that already outlaw this practice.

  • I have a question for the rider...do you not know where the vertical is for your horse's head? are you blind? ARE YOU BLIND? SAD...VERY sad...you are a disgrace to the art of dressage...unprofessional, ignorant and cruel to animals...

  • this is such a lovely horse and i just cant understand why anybody would want to torture it like this!!! it's obviously unnatural and just plain disguisting!!

  • I want to slap these people so badly!

  • This is so hard to watch. Why did none of the other riders or people standing around say anything!!!! he should have been disqualified immediately! STOP REWARDING THIS ABUSE!! Dressage ridden and executed correctly allows the horse to use his body from nose to tail in perfect balance. That is the point of the sport. building a horse to carry himself in perfect balance....period!!

  • Unfortunatly when you are standing on the sidelines or working for these people there isn't really anything you can do. No one will listen to you. I would know I worked for one of those people! Luckily we left but it is hard to watch. If the owners let the trainers do that then there isnt really anything to do. It is sad and unfortunate.

  • Yes, there is something one can do - like you - walk away - and then report them for abuse, speak up, make it known.

I watched this video wondering - all these people watching and doing nothing - why - how can that be?

  • to TheAnnestube: FEI officials have denied (until now) that hyperflexion ("Rolkur") is harmful to the horse. It's been going on to one degree or another, all over the world, for decades. The veterinarian & Bereiter (licensed trainer) Dr. Gerd Heuschmann has campaiged for some time against the practice, his voice falling on deaf ears (officials). When horses trained this way were awarded gold &blue ribbons, the flock of sheep followed. Hopefully, the tide is turning now!

  • Exactly - he should be banned from any competition at all.

  • Apparently the meeting of the FEI on the 9th will be just 'discussing' the public view of Dressage, they will not decided anything.

While the FEI, the PUBLIC view Dressage as a travesty and if something is not done now to prevent Rollkur in competitions this is going VIRAL to the non-equestrian public - then the Equestrian part of the Olympics may even be considered CRUEL and it there will be NO equitation events in the Olympics!

Better to sort it all out now!

  • i cannot express the disgust, shock and horror i feel every time i see this. i cannot believe horsemanship has gone so downhill.

    CLASSICAL EQUITATION AND NATURAL HORSEMANSHIP.

this is where every horseman should begin and continue. no abuse. these people think they can ride? i'd like to see them do all the high school movements with no contact. THAT is true mastery. why is classical riding not more promoted? it's just SO sad. abuse. plain abuse is this crappy military riding.

  • YES YES AND YES - watch a man like Pat Parelli do a perfect slide stop from full tilt gallop WITHOUT even holding the reins doing piaffe, passage, lead changes, spins, and jumps bridleless - that is ART, that is MASTERY - because it is achieved with love, without any use of force, and mechanics - he can even achieve it from the ground with the horses at liberty.

None of the horses in this movie looks like they are enjoying it one bit - and that is what equestrian sports SHOULD be about..

  • One thing to roll through your mind: We see Parelli perform beautiful feats with horses that are obviously at ease with the work now, but do you think in the process Parelli never had to push his horse to do more than the horse wanted to give? Do you think he didn't have to do exercises to increase flexibility and strength? I am 100% AGAINST rollkur, but a position that might be painfull for a short-straight necked QH might be comfortable for a long-curvy necked Warm-blood.

  • The Parelli way is to suggest and ask the horse to do something and wait for a response - if no response or clear denial from the horse, ask again - the first and foremost principle of Parelli is the use of POLITE and PASSIVE persistance - which is the opposite of using force and pressure.

I myself study with Parelli and often see him take horses totally unknown to him and only handled the 'normal' way, and high level dressage CAN be achieved without pressure and force or heavy bits.

  • I have not worked with the man personally, but I have been to his seminars, and studdied his method for a few years, and often use it.

My point is, when you have a goal to reach your horse dosn't have any reason to strive for your goals outside it's respect for your leadership. Sometimes that involves pushing harder than a whisper untill the horse accepts what is required of him. Also, few horses are born so strong and flexable to be able to do upper level movements without conditioning.

  • @jmdnarri I'm sorry if this comes out rude, but Rollkur is not comfortable for any horse. THe breathing passages are restricted, and their line of sight has been limited to their front feet, their eyes follow their nose. And Parelli does not do anything for the horse. Most horses he has trained end up running all over their owners/handlers.

  • Why do so many people imagine words that are not there???

    1. I never agreed with Rollkur, I'd be the first to out law it all togther.

    2. Parelli himself can accomplish these things, and people who try his method have varied results, I know this, I have practiced it along with about eight of my riding buddies. Some people understand how to work with horses and some people just don't get it. Different methods work for different people.
