That's very rare, that the 2 helicopters would be flying at the same height so their rotors would hit, and the fact that they flew that close was just incompetent, if they were 20 feet apart it would've looked just a cool and 10x safer. And the slasher667, those are Puma helicopters, your thinking of the C-130 Hercules, very good aircraft aswell.

What if you have a flame out in a harrier? you're screwed. Helicopters are much safer than fixed wing aircraft. They can be landed near vertically with complete loss of power at altitude. What about bad weather? what would you rather be in? a helicopter or a harrier to land? Naturally more stable or praying you don't get an electrical failure in the harrier which is basically impossible to fly dead stick? landing on a ship? full throttle in a helo or jet lag in a harrier? You're misinformed.

Helicopters are actually far more dangerous to land in bad weather because they are much more easily manipulated by wind, hail, and other bad weather circumstances.

Also, electrical failure can occur in either craft, and one is just as likely as the other, at which point it is more of a debate over whether it is safer to be moving forward whilst freefalling or to be deadfalling.

I was talking about in a VTOL situation. Electrical failure in a harrier during a hover means the loss of an aircraft. A helicopter could easily land. A helicopter can glide down also, albeit not as efficiently, tho it has far more choices as far as landing areas go than a plane has in an emergency situation.

I'm not aware of any helicopters that are fly by wire. They have them as supplemental systems to stabilize a helicopter during a hover or for straight and level autopilot but no helicopter to my knowledge is fly by wire for its primary control.

They are not really delicate but when you have those rotors spinning that fast and in opposite direction you have to realize that the speed they hit at is outrageous, if both choppers were traveling at 80 mph the blade rotation is at MINIMUM 80mph in forward rotation so those blades hit at least 160MPH since opposite sides spin againts eachother, i dont know very many things that can stand up to a 160 mph crash

the tip of the blades usually spin at about 500km/h or 330MPH ,, so the collision of the blades is about 1000km/h or 660MPH

thats nearly as fast as the blade tips of a G-Lynx helicopter, they spin just over 1000km/h or 660MPH .. (G-Lynx = fastest helicopter that exists today, can reach over 400km/h which is about 260MPH)
